This is the best outcome by miles. No hard brexit. (The city now predicts soft Brexit or even no Brexit!!!) No more crazy ideas by either side. Compromise. Tories given a good slap in the face for this stupid election.

This is the first election day in a long time with a good result!

" it's actually not a bad result for the Cons" YEs but not the predicted landslide and remember she was proper up by Murdoch and DF.

TrollMummy · 09/06/2017 09:14

TM only has herself to blame as do the Tories. They have made decisions like calling a referendum on Brexit, the Boris,Gove, Cameron, Osbourne fiasco and this election based on party politics and personal ambitions. People have seen through this and they have had enough. TMs campaign was aloof and all she proved was that she is a poor decision maker and completely disconnected from ordinary people and families.

QuiteUnfitBit · 09/06/2017 09:14

I would remind people that we last had a National Government in times of war.
We all wanted to win the war. With Brexit, we all want different things, or didn't want Brexit at all (like me).

Amanduh · 09/06/2017 09:15

The best outcome?! Really? A weak unstable govt, economy, pound, future. And likely that now 'ecstatic' lab voters will in fact get the hardest right in govt when the DUP join the tories. That would be worse than Tory maj.
There is nothing to celebrate

7461Mary18 · 09/06/2017 09:15

The legal view is not that art 50 can be undone. Plenty of lawyers don't think it can be undone (unless all 28 member states agree and ditto with delaying it).

We have fought hard and kept Corbyn out so it is a day to celebrate at least that. The sensible British people have returned more Tory MPs than Labour. Well done to them.

MiddleEnglandLives · 09/06/2017 09:15

We all want to get the best we can out of this situation.

PaulDacresFeministConscience · 09/06/2017 09:16

Sparechange Grin I'm supposed to be working!! Fortunately I am at home today (only 3 hours sleep so a good thing I'm not driving) and my work is pretty flexible so I can make up the time later.

Don't get me wrong, I find the prospect of the DUP pretty repugnant. How Arlene Foster has managed to hang on to her job after the energy scandal is a mystery to me. But the DUP can be dogmatic and obstinate on their home turf because they are a big fish in a little pond. I suspect - and rather hope - that they are intelligent enough to realise that this type of approach is not likely to work over here.

QuiteUnfitBit · 09/06/2017 09:16

That reminds me, one thing that cheers me up is that George Osbourne stood down at the election. He must be kicking himself now. He could have stood for PM. Grin

CoteDAzur · 09/06/2017 09:16

Bad day for the elites Brits

Corrected that for you.

Riversleep · 09/06/2017 09:17

I admit, before this, I thought Corbyn was a disaster even though I did vote Labour. Now, Im glad hes managed to hit the zeitgeist. I wonder if Labour will now pull together. Having more Centre left MP's in the shadow cabinet, as well as whoever the new MP's are will make for a strong alternative. That will be important if we have to have another election in a few months.

Londonlovely · 09/06/2017 09:17

"Idiotic to think another leader would have achievd what Jeremy Corbyn has achieved in this election."

^100%

I don't agree with you but have to take my hat off to your 'glass half full' approach!

Toffeelatteplease · 09/06/2017 09:18

First time in a year that I have actually felt hopeful and that feel like there has been a jolt and that the very hard right may be receding and that England will go back to being the open, tolerant and unique country I loved it for

Your joking surely

Labour is moving to the left, Conservatives are moving to the right. The mainstream parties themselves are becoming polarised. London being bamboozled why the majority of the country voted out. Many of the country resenting london having not a clue what is going on in many parts of the country and immigration. If you don't go back on article 50 the retainers will kick off if you do UKIP will rise again

It's a recipe for ever more divisive politics and ever increasing intolerance.

Husk · 09/06/2017 09:18

I do wonder what will be made on here about the DUP's links with loyalist terrorism?

Riversleep · 09/06/2017 09:18

George Osborne looked like all his christmases had come at once on ITV! He's laughing his head off!

QuiteUnfitBit · 09/06/2017 09:18

Idiotic to think another leader would have achievd what Jeremy Corbyn has achieved in this election.
Probably because they wouldn't have bought votes so cynically. Grin

rolopolovolo · 09/06/2017 09:19

You mean instability like a u-turn on the dementia tax? Instability like calling an EU referendum? Instability like calling another fucking election?

The Tories will bring us all to the poor house with their political maneuvering and game playing. They needed a bloody nose to let them know we've had enough.

OP posts:
BartholinsSister · 09/06/2017 09:19

I guess the streets will be jammed with disgruntled protesters this weekend who aren't happy with the result. Isn't that what happens after voting nowadays?

QuiteUnfitBit · 09/06/2017 09:20

It's a recipe for ever more divisive politics and ever increasing intolerance.
This!
George Osborne looked like all his christmases had come at once on ITV! He's laughing his head off! Bother, I missed that. Grin

It's interesting the number of views on this, because the chap that helped draft A50 is of the view that it can be undone, simply because if you change your mind there is nothing in the framework that says that the rest of the EU can force you to leave. They may grumble and try and impose terms - but in practice there is nothing in writing that outlines protocols for reversing A50. So if a member state just said "sorry, we're not leaving" then the rest of the member states might be a bit pissed off at all the aggro, but there would be nothing they could do to make you go regardless.

MiddleEnglandLives · 09/06/2017 09:21

Toffee and the British peole have responded by giving us a hung parliament. I would have preferred the cons/ labour numerical split the other way round myself, and stronger greens, but it seems a sensible response to what was on offer.

TheElementsSong · 09/06/2017 09:21

You mean instability like a u-turn on the dementia tax? Instability like calling an EU referendum? Instability like calling another fucking election?

Ah, OP, you see, those are examples of good instability. Like the 17% drop in sterling post-EURef is a good drop. Erasing 48% of voters as Remoaning Traitors is good divisiveness.

ImADingleDangleScarecrow · 09/06/2017 09:21

A potiential Tory/DUP coalition is very concerning indeed. The DUP are extremely white ring and don't give a damn about anyone apart from white heterosexual males.

Londonlovely · 09/06/2017 09:21

"It's a recipe for ever more divisive politics and ever increasing intolerance."

I'd say it's a reflection of how divided the country currently is. Tories have done well running divisive politics for nearly a decade.

Hung parliament is the best possible outcome for now. Let's please remember it was the Tories that destabilised our country with the referendum and a spontaneous general election. And Toni Blair destabilised the UK with his Iraq war and mighty arrogance.

Corbyn is an antidote to elitist politics. I am beyond thrilled.

MiddleEnglandLives · 09/06/2017 09:22

I don't know why I feel so hopeful but for some reason I do too!
