To be irrationally upset by DH's vote.

Just found out that DH has voted Tory for the 2nd time now. He's doing it tactically as hates SNP but I'd already pointed out to him this morning that labour came 2nd here last time. I know it's stupid but I feel really upset about this. I always thought we had a similar world view and I hate the thought that he's done the whole cliche of turning from a left wing student into a right wing middle class professional. He's really angry with me now for the way I reacted but I wouldn't be the person be married if I just said. " that's nice dear". Just now I'm feeling pretty disgusted with him though. AIBU?

YANBU - I'd divorce mine if he voted Tory

I totally agree with you my partner grow up with nothing on an estate and has now developed a horrible attitude "I am not paying for the them " makes me sick! He has made money over the last few years and has seemed to forget how hard it is to have nothing! So sad to think kids r going without food and some mums and dads r missing meals to feed there kids!! Breaks your heart to think how hard it 4 some people

Badders123 · 09/06/2017 19:42

It's odd...before we had kids it didn't bother me that Dh voted Tory (his parents are true blue all the way...eulogise thatcher..the works)
But since we had kids and since we have been using the NHS more and education I take it very very personally.
Last election he voted lib dem (wasted vote in this constituency) but this time my 14 year old begged Dh to vote labour for him as Dh couldn't decide who to vote for.
And he did.
We have to stop the tories ruining the NHS and educaton and selling them off to their mates/US

BertrandRussell · 09/06/2017 19:44

My partner is perfectly free to vote for whoever he wants. I am perfectly free to think less of him if he abandons long held principles.

optionalrationale, your post has convinced me that voting shouldn't be extended to everybody. What a disgusting, thick-witted post.

optionalrationale · 09/06/2017 19:50

AND I might add that the OP referred to her "DH" proves that she is patriarchally oppressed by the deeply misogynistic and anti feminist institution of marriage. Quite frankly I wouldn't be surprised if she's on a DIET

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 09/06/2017 19:51

AccioMerlot, that I agree with you on. I wouldn't tolerate racism on any level.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 09/06/2017 19:52

Oh look, a flying troll. Hmm

optionalrationale · 09/06/2017 19:56

Er you are actually triggering my anxiety now! Actually triggering it

Mrscaindingle · 09/06/2017 20:01

Zeffering
personally I would like to see an American system over here where what you get is based on your ability to pay Christ.

Op I don't think YABU, politics is more important to some people than others and I suspect many of those who are saying YABU are Tories anyway. For some people their politics define them and who they are and it would be difficult to share your life with someone who believes in everything that you don't.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 09/06/2017 20:03

Just shows that you know nothing, Mrscaindingle. I didn't vote Tory and I think the OP is BU. Imagine that.

welshbutenglish · 09/06/2017 20:07

www.whoshallivotefor.com/quiz

All those who have a staunch view of what party is 'good' and what party is 'evil' - as that seems to be how basic many peoples views are these days - this website is quite good. You can compare e.g. Labour and Conservative policies side by side on various subjects - business, family, work etc, you can also take a quiz to see which party your views align with the most. It can be quite surprising to see which policies come up from which party. I think it highlights how overly simplistic it is to write off one party as 'evil, selfish' or another as 'lefty, give-away'. Many of the policies are very similar. Both parties have some excellent ideas and some terrible ones.
For those eagle-eyed, it is based on into for the 2015 election but it illustrates the point well enough

Not a Tory thank you.

So according to your views those that were Labour then voted UKIP are awful. Do they become ok now they are back to voting Labour again? After all it is a lot of those voters that helped Labour considerably yesterday.

cdtaylornats · 09/06/2017 20:16

If dh voted for tories I would be very upset.

What parts of secret ballot and democracy don't yo understand

welshbutenglish · 09/06/2017 20:19

...and there proving the point exactly - now people who vote a certain way can't have an opinion on whether the OP is BU or not?

jenm87 · 09/06/2017 20:20

to be fair you cant really be upset over it, he might feel same way about who you voted for. me and my partner voted for different people but i wouldnt feel upset about it. at the end of the day everyone deserves to vote for who they want and nobody has the right to feel annoyed with anyone over it

AccioMerlot · 09/06/2017 20:27

Piglet, this ties in to what I was saying upthread, it's not so much what you vote for as how you justify it.
If you (hypothetical 'you') voted Labour-UKIP-Labour because you felt imported workers were depressing wages, I could understand where you were coming from (though I would be sending you endless tedious links to prove that was wrong)
However if you voted ukip because of bendy bananas, hoovers, or light bulbs, I reserve the right to nod politely and back away smiling, and never have sex with you.

Zeffering · 09/06/2017 20:29

Personally as a business owner I have had more money in my pocket under a labour government, but just can abide by their free will with the social state which Is still bad enough under a Tory government

I am surprised the whole country doesn't sink under the weight of it all, our yearly spend on the welfare state must outstrip the lendlease for the whole of WW2

MmeBoulaye · 09/06/2017 20:36

brotherhoodofspam. You seem incredibly immature. At what point do you grow from being a "left wing student" into someone more progressive and worldly?

SherbrookeFosterer · 09/06/2017 20:38

Democracy is the barometer of the nation.

Note the mood, dress accordingly.

It's all you can do.

Right now I suggest gardening clothes and unpolished shoes, don't do anything to your hair.

welshbutenglish · 09/06/2017 20:44

Michelle - presumably your partner, having made money, now pays taxes? Isn't that what we're striving for here? For people to pull themselves up out of poverty and be able to make themselves some money, and therefore pay some tax too so those less fortunate can benefit?

MmeBoulaye · 09/06/2017 20:45

Hurrah!

treaclesoda · 09/06/2017 20:45

I don't know how my DH votes and he doesn't know how I vote.

It works for us. There can be no loss of respect that way.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 09/06/2017 20:45

... and if all else fails, stereotyping and bigotry will do nicely.

Dennis Thatcher, that quiet but erstwhile and arudite man said of bletherers (of which there are far too many):

"Better to keep silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt".

He was bang on target there. Slept with a Tory too by all accounts...
