From article:

On Friday, Trump got in on the fundraising part of the gig, putting her name to a letter asking supporters to sign a birthday card for her husband, who turns 71 on June 14 -- signing requires a donation to the Trump Make America Great Again Committee.
"I need your help to make it a birthday my husband will never forget," said the letter. "Our celebrations always include family and close friends."
This year, that celebration could likely take place at the White House, with the entire Trump clan in attendance, herself included.

Cozie, the Georgia 6 winner will complete the term of the incumbent (Tom Price) who vacated the office. That term will end in 2018, as he was elected in 2016. (I'm not sure if you by 'normal term' you meant the remainder of the current term or a normal two year term.)

I have to admit the Qatar thing has got me confused; The 'rest' of the ME turns on them. But then there was something about 'fake news'. I thought the fake news was that the reports used to name Qatar a 'terror state' were false. So shouldn't that have settled things? Is this about oil reserves or Qatar being friendly to nations that the rest of the ME are not? I need the 'Qatar Scandal for Dummies' version.

cozietoesie · 09/06/2017 22:17

Ta. I meant 2018 - i.e. The remainder of the current term.

cozietoesie · 09/06/2017 22:20

PS - as for Qatar? 45 is completely clueless. It's one thing to tweet about Comey but quite another to do it about the Middle East.........

Anyone else watching The Last Leg? Adam Hills just had a fabulous rant aimed at Trump over his tweets about Sadiq Khan. As soon as a video is available I will post it.

Theresa May fighting to stay in Downing St as senior Tories ponder leadership challenge #Premium www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/06/09/theresa-may-fighting-stay-downing-st-senior-tories-ponder-leadership/

The bit that stands out for me about the confusing Quatar thing is the post the other day whichsaid it had pushed oil prices up. Mystery solved.

BerylStreep · 09/06/2017 22:48

WTF is May doing sidling up to the DUP?

Apart from being thoroughly unpleasant and far-right (IMO), it could completely destabilise Northern Ireland. Honestly, had the option been there, it would have been preferable to cosy up to UKIP.

Does this mean that there will be DUP cabinet ministers? Like proper ministers, not Stormont ones? I suppose the silver lining may be that DUP are exposed to proper and professional politics, and may have to re-evaluate their stance on some major issues (gay marriage, abortion, creationism Hmm)

lionheart · 09/06/2017 22:54

I really don't know how the Tory-Dup plan will work.

AcrossthePond55 · 09/06/2017 23:17

I was thinking about the Tory/DUP thing.

I think it will be similar to the Healthcare reform GOP brouhaha. Remember the contretemps between the general GOP members and the 'Freedom Caucus' that wouldn't go along with the program? They wanted a full scale repeal of the ACA and nothing less would do. As a result the first bill was not brought to vote. They then had to placate the Freedom Caucus with a version that was much more severe than even the GOP wanted it to be just to get 'something' passed and moved on to the Senate where they hope it will be revised into something at least partially humane.

I think it would be the same in Parliament. The Tories would want 'such and such' legislation, but the DUP members would/could stymie it because it didn't meet with their 'agenda'. As a result the legislation is either stalled or has to morph into something much more harsh or conservative than even the Tories would want. And if I'm correct, you don't really have a second house to water it down. I'm not really sure what the Lords does, do they change legislation?

This kind of thing is a big mess.

The Lords can (and do) amend legislation, but (and my long ago politics degree is failing me now) legislation needs to meet a certain mandate before it reaches the Lords.

It's not the mechanics of legislation that worries me. It is the impact on Northern Ireland that the DUP are in actual proper government. They have been elevated to the position of favourite child in the NI politics arena Grin. That won't play out well amongst the other NI parties.

lionheart · 10/06/2017 01:18

That's a very real concern, I think, Beryl.

The give and take might well play out in the way you suggest, Across.
