Ah Yes. Why Comey felt a special prosecutor would be counter-productive in the Clinton case (or such words as he used) but didn't make the same assertion about subsequent ........matters.

My understanding from what he said was that he didn't feel there was enough of a case for Clinton to answer for it to be worth a special prosecutor. I saw the questions on this as trying to say that the Clinton's email case and the Russia/trump situation were comparable, which they are clearly not. And that maybe a special prosecutor wasn't such a big deal, which is clearly is.

cozietoesie · 08/06/2017 18:15

Well quite. Smile

Anniegetyourgun · 08/06/2017 18:20

I think he was trying to imply that both candidates should be equally under suspicion for colluding with Russian interference. I'm sure the Trumpettes will buy it.

Anniegetyourgun · 08/06/2017 18:20

Or that, yeah.

PerkingFaintly · 08/06/2017 18:27

Comey did state to McCain that there was no suspicion of the Clinton campaign being in collusion with the Russians.

This is an important statement. But for Trumpettes it'll be lost in the mood music.

Now I'm not even American, but even I am pretty sure requesting that the director of the FBI drops an investigation into one of my mates is probably not the done thing. Being new to the job is an excuse for accidentally using Janet from accounts' tea bags, not for trying to influence an active investigation Hmm

A wee bit off topic, but when can you all expect UK election results to start rolling in?

SanFranBear · 08/06/2017 18:49

Just to go back to the comment about how Comey is the reason that Trump won...

Aaaaaaages back - literally one the first threads here - gave a detailed explanation about why it was announced when it was announced. I'm tying to dredge my memory but I'm sure it was because the earlier investigation hadn't been completed correctly and so Comey felt obliged to check it himself. Not because he felt there was wrongdoing but because, as others have mentioned, he wanted to do the right thing.

Argh.. I'm going to have to try and find the link now Smile

MrsT2007 · 08/06/2017 18:50

Comey nailed Pence (was vkwarvhe knew about Flynn being investigated)

Pretty much confirmed there's some truth in Steele too by 'csntvtalk about it here' GLOMAR response.

I'm absolutely certain this testimony plays right into Bobby 'Three Sticks' Mueller's hands. They've worked together for years....

And there was delicious hints about the fact that the election investigation can reveal other criminal matters (RICO?!)

cozietoesie · 08/06/2017 18:54

I bet 45's staffers are primed to ensure that he's not left alone for twenty seconds if they can help it. (At least not alone but with a working phone! Grin)

SanFranBear · 08/06/2017 18:56

OK - got muddled. So it wasn't because he thought the first investigation wasn't done correctly, it's because the investigation had been declared closed - when it wasn't.

www.nytimes.com/2017/04/22/us/politics/james-comey-election.amp.html

Whatever the reason, I think the sway the announcement had on the electorate shouldn't be downplayed. I don't think it was the sole reason but it most definitely played a significant part.

AcrossthePond55 · 08/06/2017 18:58

I think someone (though God knows who) has convinced Scrotus that 'silence in golden' in this situation.

I'll bet it's just KILLING him!

cozietoesie · 08/06/2017 19:01

He won't be able to endure it. He needs those 'likes'. Wink

He was giving a speech. He also said "The truth will prevail."

i imagine he was instructed repeatedly to stick to the script.

Here you go, Across. I hope the link works.

UK General Election 2017 results etc

BoreOfWhabylon · 08/06/2017 19:04

A wee bit off topic, but when can you all expect UK election results to start rolling in?

Polls close at 10pm Across, results usually start coming in around midnight but it can take a few hours to see which way things are going.

Perihelion · 08/06/2017 19:05

Election results start coming in from 11pm, but busiest at around 2-4am. By 4/5am can usually tell who's won......who knows this time.

I'm watching MSNBC for those interested but I assume most networks will cover it

The ex (just) Director of the FBI has called the President of the United States a liar in front of the Senate in sworn testimony. Blimey .......thinking back.

PerkingFaintly · 08/06/2017 19:21

Of course the biggest fun is always when the proxies go out front and say this, and say that.

And then 45 comes out on camera or Twitter and blows the whole thing.
