To ask for a summary on the Tory v Labour stance on what to do about terrorism?

This is looking like being the most critical issue of our times at the moment despite my thoughts that Brexit was the crux of this election.

Can anyone cut through the waffle and tell us what the 2 main parties are offering to do about extremists and terrorism?

If Labour had a credible leader then I'm sure they would have a good chance as the Tory campaign has been a shambles

Two4One2017 · 04/06/2017 21:11

Video of JC saying he doesn't support a shoot to kill policy is top of the most watched on the BBC

And here's the FT re: McDonnell:

CivQueen · 04/06/2017 21:15

Yeah, have you watched the video?

I really struggle to understand how any sane, thinking person can have a problem with someone not liking a general shoot to kill policy.

The key word is general. He didn't say we shouldn't shoot to kill if needed.

Livelovebehappy · 04/06/2017 21:16

Can't believe people on here actually suggesting they trust Abbot more than May. Really?? And a lot of assumptions that Corbyn will replace her should he win the GE. Are you prepared to take the risk that he doesnt? He's never hidden the fact that he values and trusts her. She has stuck by him through the revolt he had from his own party last year, so I'm pretty sure she will be rewarded for her loyalty by retaining the home Secretary position, which is just too scarey to contemplate isn't it?

CivQueen · 04/06/2017 21:22

Hmm.

Take the risk of a PM so cosy with Saudi she won't even acknowledge they are a huge source of funding for extremism in the U.K..

CivQueen · 04/06/2017 21:25

Damn posted too soon.

The risk of a PM that has alienated the police, slashed their number.

Won't give intelligence agencies the funding they are crying out for to do their jobs.

Vs

A woman, who admittedly is an idiot. Who won't be the pm and who, it is fair to guess, would be shunted aside quietly as she is massively unpopular.

Can't exactly do it during the election can they?

Plus Corbyn was pretty limited on his choices. Most ran away when they thought he didn't fit the mound enough to make it.

Bombardier25966 · 04/06/2017 21:27

Can't believe people on here actually suggesting they trust Abbot more than May.

I didn't say that, I said she couldn't do a worse job. Seven years as Home Secretary and what did she achieve?

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 04/06/2017 21:39

TM has been talking today about internet regulation to counter terrorism as if this is a new idea.

Last year the Investigatory Powers Act was brought in, championed by her.

www.theguardian.com/world/2016/nov/19/extreme-surveillance-becomes-uk-law-with-barely-a-whimper

This legislation didn't help in recent cases.

Plus terrorism existed before the Internet. The IRA were able to go about their business without having the Internet available.

So I feel a bit confused by her focus on this.

AllThePrettySeahorses · 04/06/2017 21:40

CivQueen - do you really think McDonnell did not know what that letter was? If someone gave you a letter and said say cheese, would you not see what it was first?

And here is another summary of ISIS funding - Saudi Arabia plays a far less important part than many seem to think, especially as far as weapons go www.independent.co.uk/news/world/paris-attacks-where-does-isis-get-its-money-and-arms-a6736716.html

Can't say I disagree with you about the Tories though. What a shower of shite we're stuck with either way.

CivQueen · 04/06/2017 21:46

Maybe.

But how believable is it that he would knowingly hold an incredibly inflammatory, damaging letter proposing something ridiculous, in full sight of a camera, and have a picture taken?

There was a report commissioned to investigate the extent of Saudi funding of extremism in the U.K.

The report has been deemed too 'sensitive' to publish by the government.

Bombardier25966 · 04/06/2017 21:47

do you really think McDonnell did not know what that letter was? If someone gave you a letter and said say cheese, would you not see what it was first?

If you read the letter it's one line on a sheet of A4 text. We've all been guilty of being asked to sign a long document and not reading the whole thing.

I think cock up sums it up nicely.

Believeitornot · 04/06/2017 21:48

The focus on the internet is a red herring but I do think something needs doing. It's too easy to share propaganda.

I think our linked to Saudi need a long hard look at. Publicly. My understand is that Saudi Arabia fund groups like ISIS and we make money from the Saudis by selling shit loads of weapons. Great Hmm

We also need to do more to understand why people actually do this.

These are longer term arms.

In the short to medium term, we need more policing and police numbers. Theresa May got away with cutting police numbers but we are seeing increases in violent crime, let alone terrorism.

I'm fully expecting (sadly) for there to be more terrorist attacks. We need short, medium and long term plans to tackle it.

Believeitornot · 04/06/2017 21:48

*aims not arms Hmm

AllThePrettySeahorses · 04/06/2017 21:56

CivQueen - he did though. He's admitted holding it up. He signed it. On your second point - it would be very interesting to see the results of that report. I know Saudi Arabia has been making improvements lately under a new administration so perhaps cut them some slack, but it still doesn't mean the country shouldn't be held to account for what it's done and nor should the results be hidden from us.

Bombardier25966 I always check what I'm signing (polishes mistrustful halo). It was one page long, would take 3 mins to read.

Two4One2017 · 04/06/2017 22:24

Re: internet being a red herring.

Read some papers by think tanks with terrorism specialists. They will explain the key role social media and the internet has played in the rise of Isis and recruitment and the spread of propaganda. It is very real. It's s global problem. It absolutely needs sorting out but will only happen with international cooperation

Two4One2017 · 04/06/2017 22:58

Police uncover You Tube link to London a Terror Attack

sexymuthafunker · 04/06/2017 23:00

Not selling the weapons to
terrorists would help 😡😡😡

mothertruck3r · 05/06/2017 08:02

May sucks up to the Saudis and doesn't give enough funding to the police.

Corbyn calls people who advocate the murder of Jews his "friends" and has said in the past he wouldn't use shoot to kill.

They both seem pretty appalling to me.

Nikephorus · 05/06/2017 08:05

Tory - put more money & resources into security services, take action including through internet
Labour - talk nicely to them & hope that the thought of Diane Abbott coming near them scares them into leaving the country
Sorry but Corbyn has shot his party in the foot on this one. His attitude & Abbott's make Labour a no-go for me on this issue.

Nikephorus · 05/06/2017 08:06

May sucks up to the Saudis
Why do people keep bleating on about this? All PMs have done the same regardless of their political leanings.

Adrifty86 · 05/06/2017 08:06

Sigh.

Corbin was at a meeting discussing peace.

He was using inclusive language to all of the members.

He didn't invite Hamas over for Christmas.

Its not hard to find these things out.
