Was it me on the wrong?

On a day trip last week my DH and I decided to have fish & chips for lunch. I asked for 2 fish & chips please. We had to wait a while for the chips to cook so stood away from the counter until the server called out that our order was ready. When we found a nice place to sit we opened the bag which contained 1 box, that box contained 2 fish and chips, which yes I did ask for but surely it would normally be understood that when I ask for 2 fish & chips I mean 1 fish and 1 portion of chips x 2.

Am I wrong?

We didn't go back and complain, in fact it turned out for the better as i couldn't of eaten any more. Would of been nice to of had my own box though. Thank goodness we weren't in a group, can you imagine what I'd of got had I asked for 7 fish and chips!

MrsTerryPratchett

That is very, very sad.

Sushi? Oh dear............

MrsTerryPratchett · 02/06/2017 15:29

I know right? Dip that in batter and fry it. It's RAW.

SummerMummy88 · 02/06/2017 15:32

Hmmm we live in a popular seaside resort up north and I would of said you got what you asked for tbh, I would of said fish and chips twice. Least it is a funny little story for you to tell people lol 😂

Toooldtobearsed · 02/06/2017 15:32

But even then, what about the chips?

And the scraps?

You need to move home.

amusedbush · 02/06/2017 15:33

You should have said "two fish suppers" (Scottish)

But a "two fish supper" is what the OP got, so I still wouldn't chance that! But then I'm a bit of a mumbler Grin

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 02/06/2017 15:33

Our usual chippy order is two cod, one battered sausage, one small chips. That easily does the three of us - DS sometimes has to help me finish my fish and we nearly always struggle to polish off the whole portion of chips between us. Maybe our chippy is over generous with the chips but none of us could manage a whole portion on our own.

paxillin · 02/06/2017 15:33

Fish and chips for me and the same for Mr Neonfrogs, too, please?

Cheerybigbottom · 02/06/2017 15:36

This confusion regularly gets me in the chippy. I'm used to saying "2 fish suppers". I revised this to "2 fish and chips" but didn't get two equal portions. So changed to "2 fish with chips each" but then came the "large fish or large chips?... " and other questions.

Consensus of local English family say order should be "small/large fish and chips twice" but I'm quite fed up of fish and chips now anyway Grin

HappyFlappy · 02/06/2017 15:37

Fish and chips twice, or two fish lots

Either of these is correct.

DH and I have got two fish and one portion of chips before, due to the ridiculously huge portions of chips theatre served as standard these days. In my day you got chips in a bag that would fit comfortably in your hand . . . .

ShotsFired · 02/06/2017 15:37

I HAVE ordered saying "fish and chips twice" and only got one serving Sad

My local place does kebabs and chips, as well as a "dish" called "kebab and chips" (just the meat draped over the chips). After a terrible misunderstanding where we got this weedy little thing instead of the disgusting pigout we'd planned, we now order it as:

"1 large doner"... "AND 1 large chips please"

HappyFlappy · 02/06/2017 15:38

*that are, not theatre

FFS Autocorrect - it's not rocket surgery!

pinkblink · 02/06/2017 15:38

Two fish and chips is fish and chips x2
Two fish and a/a portion/one chips is what you where given

PhuqIt · 02/06/2017 15:40

Love how many people have joined in on the "I eat less than you, I'm so angelic" band wagon 😂

"You wanted a fish and chips EACH? Wow we get half a bag of child-portion chips and it feeds me, DH, the DCs and next door!"

So fucking what 😂 The OP isn't asking for advice on portion sizes!

MrsTerryPratchett · 02/06/2017 15:40

Thinking about it in our house it would have been, "Plaice and chips, cod and chips, battered sausage and chips". No confusion.

Eliza9917 · 02/06/2017 15:41

I'd have given you two separate portions of fish & chips, but to avoid confusion I'd have used industry speak and would have said '2no (number) fish & chips please'. They probably wouldn't have known wtf I was on about but h2b normally goes in the shop now if we have fish & chips and I wait in the car looking for the ketchup lololol (I detest sachets of sauce so we keep a bottle of ketchup in the car now Grin )

amusedbush · 02/06/2017 15:43

"You wanted a fish and chips EACH? Wow we get half a bag of child-portion chips and it feeds me, DH, the DCs and next door!"

GrinGrinGrin

I'm a firm believer that anything is a single serving if you try hard enough Wink

HappyGirlNow · 02/06/2017 15:43

Another Scot. 2 fish suppers please. Non-ambiguous up here Grin

Theresnonamesleft · 02/06/2017 15:50

How did you not notice until you were sitting? Surely you had seen the size of the boxes to know it was a it small. What about the salt and vinegar bit? Never mind the cost, I would have questioned that straight away as it would have been less.

Seeingadistance · 02/06/2017 15:51

2 fish suppers here too!

In our local chippies, a fish supper gets you two pieces of fish plus chips. A small fish supper is one piece of fish plus chips.

Aaaargh! Starving now!

April241 · 02/06/2017 15:52

Scot here also "two fish suppers please, tons of salt and vinegar". Done!

BluePancakes · 02/06/2017 15:52

We normally have fish, chips, 2 battered sausages, meat pie and curry sauce, all shared between 4 of us (2A 2C). Yum.

For what you wanted, I'd've said "two lots of fish'n'chips" as two fish and chips means to me what you got.

That said, there is huge variety in portion sizes depending where you go. When we moved, I asked for fish, large chips, etc etc and was a shock to be given this massive paper bag of chips that easily could've fed 6 adults.

AlansLeftMoob · 02/06/2017 15:53

I'd have said 2 portions of fish & chips but you should've been asked if it was 2 fish or 2 portions. Also I'd have been gutted to have to share chips, I'm a greedy bitch and my DH eats too fast so I hate sharing food with him!

MrsHathaway · 02/06/2017 15:54

Oh dear no.

If you put the vinegar on before you get home, it goes all soggy and still isn't vinegary enough. I think they must water it down Hmm

I drench mine when we get home. Clears out the sinuses of everyone in the family and half the street.

Fruitcocktail6 · 02/06/2017 15:55

This has happened to me before! And I HATE sharing chips.

'Fish and chips twice' is probably the safest bet.

ShotsFired · 02/06/2017 15:58

All you people asking for generic "fish suppers" and whatnot....what fish to you get/expect to get/want?
