Was it me on the wrong?

On a day trip last week my DH and I decided to have fish & chips for lunch. I asked for 2 fish & chips please. We had to wait a while for the chips to cook so stood away from the counter until the server called out that our order was ready. When we found a nice place to sit we opened the bag which contained 1 box, that box contained 2 fish and chips, which yes I did ask for but surely it would normally be understood that when I ask for 2 fish & chips I mean 1 fish and 1 portion of chips x 2.

Am I wrong?

We didn't go back and complain, in fact it turned out for the better as i couldn't of eaten any more. Would of been nice to of had my own box though. Thank goodness we weren't in a group, can you imagine what I'd of got had I asked for 7 fish and chips!

Today 15:17 Sunshineandeggshells

I would have said "fish and chips twice" but having said that what do you say for three portions? "Fish and chips thrice?"

Fish and chips three times

nokidshere · 02/06/2017 16:51

I would have asked for Cod and chips twice please Grin

BewtySkoolDropowt · 02/06/2017 16:56

Definitely two fish suppers (which would be haddock)

No confusion with two fish suppers and one fish supper that has two fish, as that is a double fish supper. Easy!

DaisyChaining · 02/06/2017 16:57

Not a good thread to read on a diet

HornyTortoise · 02/06/2017 17:06

It could mean what you meant, or it could mean what they thought you meant.

Missing the point a bit, but chip shops always overdo the chips. One portion is generally enough for me and DH, AND the 2 kids...and we do not eat like birds, pretty average i would say Blush

LilaBard · 02/06/2017 17:07

I would have asked for 2 portions of fish and chips, because I have had this problem before - went into McDonald's and asked for a plain burger for my mum (as in no sauces or gherkins or owt), got into the car and handed my mum her food.... and it was an empty bap

AlpacaPicnic · 02/06/2017 17:16

DH and I got around this problem by ordering 'one cod and chips, one haddock and chips please - and a curry sauce' but then our local chippy offended us so we removed our custom and now order them to be delivered praise be to Just eat and it's even easier! I press the button that says 'repeat last order' and voila! 2 large bits of fish 2 large portions of chips are on their way... and I get changed into stretchy trousers...

IfYouGoDownToTheWoodsToday · 02/06/2017 17:16

Gosh it's a mine field isn't it Shock. I will be a quivering wreak next time I go to the chippy!

i always say '"2 portions of fish and chips please'

icanteven · 02/06/2017 17:28

I'd love fish and chips now.

ilovepixie · 02/06/2017 17:32

In NI you would ask for 2 fish suppers

RapunzelsRealMom · 02/06/2017 17:38

In Scotland it's two fish suppers

Ginslinger · 02/06/2017 17:45

I wish England would adopt this wonderful terminology of the fish supper - I wonder what the local chippy's reaction would be if I asked for a fish supper

notsmartenough · 02/06/2017 17:45

I'd have expected 2 fish and 2 portions of chips.
We have fish dinners - cod, chips, processed peas and either gravy or curry sauce.

amusedbush · 02/06/2017 17:52

This thread is making me glad that I either go for a sausage supper or a pizza crunch Grin

MyOtherNameIsTaken · 02/06/2017 17:53

Yay! It's Friday so the chippy is open tonight. I'll still only order 2 cod and 1 chips though because their portions are gigantic.

2 cod and chips = 2 fish and 2 portions of chips. 🍟

MrsHathaway · 02/06/2017 17:59

Yy East Coast "fish supper" which if you're sufficiently rural is gruffly pronounced "fush supper" and is therefore how we say it chez Hath.

khajiit13 · 02/06/2017 18:06

I order "2 fish and chips" and get fish and chips x2. I wouldn't have been impressed if I were you

Theresnonamesleft · 02/06/2017 18:52

How much do you all pay for your fish and chips?

Just checked the local one and for fish - cod, haddock, place or rock salmon £10.95

Mollie85 · 02/06/2017 19:09

Channel Islands - £6 for a piece of fish
£2.50 for regular chips (varied but this is the one I go to)

15 years ago I worked in a chippy and it was £3.50 for fish and £1.50 for chips, so was nice and simple !

Cod is standard and you'd have to specifically request haddock.

We also used to do battered cod roe... Confused 🤢

hula008 · 02/06/2017 19:16

I would normally ask for 2 cod and a large portion of chips. Wouldn't occur to me to order 2 portions separately and wouldn't mind it it came in one box.

PuppyMonkey · 02/06/2017 19:19

This reminds me of when I was younger and it was always my job to go to the chip shop and get the tea on a Friday. I was constantly Confused at how to ask for the order, it made me so anxious.

Especially as my mum always used to insist I say "xx PORTIONS of chips, please." I wasn't allowed to just say "bags of chips" like everyone else. Mortifying. Sad

(I don't like fish I go for an unbattered sausage every time).Grin

RiversrunWoodville · 02/06/2017 19:23

Another NI so 2 fish suppers, I remember the when my best friend went to uni in Lancaster and I went over with her to help her move and we went and asked in the local chippy for 2 sausage suppers with gravy they looked at us like we had 2 heads Blush

MrsHathaway · 02/06/2017 19:39

Fish and chips £6 ish here (Chinese chippy).

Large chips on its own £2 I think. Chips and hot curry sauce about £2.50.

BlondeB83 · 02/06/2017 19:52

"One of each twice" here in God's Own County. 😊

Lovelilies · 02/06/2017 20:13

I've just had to go out and buy fish and chips because of this thread!
