Was it me on the wrong?

On a day trip last week my DH and I decided to have fish & chips for lunch. I asked for 2 fish & chips please. We had to wait a while for the chips to cook so stood away from the counter until the server called out that our order was ready. When we found a nice place to sit we opened the bag which contained 1 box, that box contained 2 fish and chips, which yes I did ask for but surely it would normally be understood that when I ask for 2 fish & chips I mean 1 fish and 1 portion of chips x 2.

Am I wrong?

We didn't go back and complain, in fact it turned out for the better as i couldn't of eaten any more. Would of been nice to of had my own box though. Thank goodness we weren't in a group, can you imagine what I'd of got had I asked for 7 fish and chips!

'Two fish and chips' means two portions of fish and chips, especially if there are two people ordering.

I had a Summer job as a waitress. A woman ordered 'mushroom with egg'. She got mushrooms with an egg. Then she complained that she had meant a mushroom omelet. As mushroom omelet was on the menu I have no idea why she didn't just order a mushroom omelet. Presumably she thought waitresses grow up in caves where there are no such things as omelets, and they can't read, and they are singularly unobservant to work in a café for weeks that serves omelets and still not know what an omelet is.

It isn't her assumption of my ignorance that grated, it was her complete lack of common sense and logic. Her DH was very much 'WTF?' too, only with no cussing.

JoandMax · 02/06/2017 16:01

I think I'd probably ask for 2 portions of fish and chips but I also would interpret your way of meaning 2 portions too.....

But like a PP I also live in a county with NO fish and chip shops and am now craving them so badly! Only 8 weeks til we come back for a visit and thankfully my parents live by the coast with a lot of excellent ones around.......

Katedotness1963 · 02/06/2017 16:04

Two fish suppers.

Motoko · 02/06/2017 16:04

I'm looking forward to going on holiday in a couple of weeks, because my favourite chippy is there.
They sometimes have rock in, so I have rock and chips. The batter is soo crispy.

Can't wait!

Katedotness1963 · 02/06/2017 16:05

I'd expect to get haddock, I've rarely seen any other kind of fish in a chippy. There's skate but you'd say if you wanted that.

Ginmakesitallok · 02/06/2017 16:07

2 fish suppers in scotland = 2 haddock suppers.

Now what you really want is a dressed fish supper.

Ginslinger · 02/06/2017 16:12

I would've said 2 portions of fish and chips because I've said what the OP said and had it questioned so now I leave no room for doubt

Toooldtobearsed · 02/06/2017 16:13

PhuqIt if that was aimed at me, believe me, no one loves chips more than i do, i just thought it was funny that our local chippy is sooooo, generous (the fish must be about 16 inches long) that no one, and i mean no one could eat a whole fish and chips 😊

Smellbellina · 02/06/2017 16:13

I'd expect cod, if you want haddock or plaice you have to ask for it specifically at our chippy

I have to say Ive always asked for 2 fish and chips as in 2 x (fish and chips) and Ive always had 2 portions with and chips.

Weve done that with different numbers too (4 with the dcs, 6 with dcs and PIL), it ha never been a problem and yes it would have thrown me to have just one portion of chips!
I dont think I've even been proposed fish wo the chips tbh.

ShotsFired · 02/06/2017 16:22

Oooh there culd be trouble brewing in chippies up and down the land now...

@Katedotness1963 I'd expect to get haddock, I've rarely seen any other kind of fish in a chippy. There's skate but you'd say if you wanted that.

@Ginmakesitallok 2 fish suppers in scotland = 2 haddock suppers.

@Smellbellina I'd expect cod, if you want haddock or plaice you have to ask for it specifically at our chippy

(PS. haddock is a funny word if you read it too many times)

Timeandtune · 02/06/2017 16:24

We have options here :
2 fish suppers would be 2x2 pieces of fish with 2 portions of chips
A mini fish supper would be 1 piece of fish and a portion of chips
Or you could have a single fish ( confusingly this would be 1x2 pieces of fish) and no chips.
Or you could have any of the above as a special fish, takes a bit longer and is done in ruskoline rather than batter.
Hungry anyone ?

PhuqIt · 02/06/2017 16:24

Toooldtobearsed - no not aimed at anyone in particular, just reading down the thread started to sound like a competition on how small everyone's appetite is 😂

butterfly198615 · 02/06/2017 16:29

I don't think your wrong at all, you asked for 2 fish and chips so should have got 2x fish and 2x portions of chips. Our town has many fish and chip shops and eveyone I knows says this if they are ordering for two people. Never come across this happening before.
If you were gonna ask for 2 fish and 1 chips, you would of said please can I have 2 fish and just 1 portion of chips.
I would of gone back in and ordered another portion of chips. Smile

deadringer · 02/06/2017 16:33

I would have cried op, cried bitterly. No way would one bag of chips cut it. 2 fish and chips means 2 fish and 2 chips to me. God I'm hungry.

weebarra · 02/06/2017 16:37

Two fish suppers with salt and sauce. East coast Scot here.

yourcarisnotadiscovery · 02/06/2017 16:39

OP - I used to work in a fish and chip shop and I would have given you 2 lots of fish and chips - otherwise you would have asked for 2 fish and one portion of chips! (mind you having read what other people say, seems there is special fish n chip shop ordering language which I have never heard.

RupertsMum2 · 02/06/2017 16:41

Mmmmm. I'm on grandson watching duty this evening and l have to pass two chip shops on the way home!

KatieC0811 · 02/06/2017 16:42

I used to work in a chippy and we always double checked when people said "two x and chips", not many people said "x and chips twice", must be an area thing

grannytomine · 02/06/2017 16:44

Did you pay when you ordered? Sounds like you did, if so didn't you notice you hadn't paid for two portions of chips?

ItsNachoCheese · 02/06/2017 16:46

A fish supper (scotland) is 1 or 2 slices of fish with chips. But a half pizza crunch supper with brown sauce is the food of the chippy gods Grin

redladybird · 02/06/2017 16:47

I say "cod and fish twice".

CoughingForWeeks · 02/06/2017 16:49

I'd have clarified if I'd been serving you. If ordering, I'd have asked for two portions of fish and chips.

Portion sizes vary wildly - I used to live near a chippy where one portion of chips easily fed myself and my housemate (leaving no room for fish) but the portions from the one nearest my current flat are much more manageable.

dotdotdotmustdash · 02/06/2017 16:49

Another East coast Scot here. Two fish suppers with salt and sauce, and a single fish (which has a small amount of chips included) for the wean. Simples.
