To think that 3 adults should be able to work out 17 divided by 3 without the need for a calculator?

I run a local board games group.

Behind me three grown men were trying to work out this very difficult sum Hmm wondering what the answer was, one of them said they would get their phone out to us the calculator at which point I interjected and told them the answer.

These men are 25+!

Id expect a 6 year old to be able to do this... In their head!

17 doesn't divide equally by 3. It's 5 with 2 spare.

AllTheWittyNamesAreGone · 02/06/2017 08:01

Star well done you...

Unsure of what response you want..

PacificDogwod · 02/06/2017 08:02

YANBU although a 6 yo may struggle Grin

caffeinestream · 02/06/2017 08:02

You'd expect a six year old able to divide into three with two left over? Hmm

RyanStartedTheFire · 02/06/2017 08:02

Congrats, you're the best maths wiz around.

AtticusCactus · 02/06/2017 08:03

Carol Vorderman, is that you? Grin

Fairylea · 02/06/2017 08:04

I couldn't do that. I can't even add stuff together in the shops. I have dyscalcular. Basically dyslexia but with numbers. In all other areas I did very well in school / college etc (straight A student). But my maths was terrible and I used to get Es and worse. My dh still pulls faces at me when I ask him to work out simple sums for me. I just can't do it!

00100001 · 02/06/2017 08:05

OK fine, not a six year old.

But it is basic maths.

OP posts:
DontTouchTheMoustache · 02/06/2017 08:06

I can do it but it took a bit of finger counting Blush

RyanStartedTheFire · 02/06/2017 08:07

You might consider it basic maths, others would consider it challenging. Do you want an award for being good at maths when others aren't?

Trifleorbust · 02/06/2017 08:07

I did it but I got roughly £5.70 and it is £5.66 (which makes sense when you think of it as thirds rather than just do it as a calculation). Most kids of 5 or 6 wouldn't be able to do that, IMO.

FuckyDuck · 02/06/2017 08:08

5.666666666 recurring

Zoflorabore · 02/06/2017 08:09

It doesn't divide exactly so is that what they had the problem with? Not everyone is good at mental maths.
I am, but was rubbish in my gcse maths paper, many people when dividing a number like this would try and round up if splitting a bill or something so I would say £17 split 3 ways is £5.70 each approx.

Also, lots of people rely on their phones to do calculations these days, it's just a sign of the times and surely doesn't reflect their intelligence.

youarenotkiddingme · 02/06/2017 08:10

I'm very good at maths and can do mental maths sums quickly.

But I have empathy for those who can't. As 17 doesn't divide by 3 equally they may have struggled.

And sneer all you want. My ds is an amazing mathematician and can sort binary numbers in his head so quickly. He can do algebra way beyond his years.

He cannot spell the first 200 high frequency words or do his timestables.

I'd be furious at any snarky judgemental onlooker who made a snap judgement on him based on one conversation

YABVVVVVVU .

RedHelenB · 02/06/2017 08:10

No six year old would be expected to do it! Division is by 2 at that age. I do agree though that over 25 should be able to do it in their heads.

BewtySkoolDropowt · 02/06/2017 08:11

Kaniel, are you saying that if you went out for coffee with two friends, and the bill came to £17, you would view it as £5 each with two spare?

00100001 · 02/06/2017 08:11

They had 17 tokens and had to divide them between 3 people, any extras stay on the board.

OP posts:
youarenotkiddingme · 02/06/2017 08:11

He's for those who know it's

17/3

5x3= 15

2 remaining = 2/3 = 0.6666

araiwa · 02/06/2017 08:11

so op is boasting that theyre as good as a 6 year old at maths?

PenelopeFlintstone · 02/06/2017 08:12

YANBU. Of course they should've been able to do it. You don't have to be 'good at maths' to divide 17 by 3. I just asked my 13 and 14 year olds and they both did it.

HmmmHashtag · 02/06/2017 08:15

@Fairylea me too!

SootSprite · 02/06/2017 08:16

Well, aren't you a charmer Hmm

KanielOutis · 02/06/2017 08:16

Bewty - OP didn't say she was at a bar buying drinks, she said she was at a board game group. They could have been handing out game pieces.

jojo2916 · 02/06/2017 08:18

Comments re sneering are completely over the top. It is basic maths. I struggle with maths but I'm not hyper sensitive enough to take offense at this. Pp need to get over themselves. It is surprising none of the 3 adults could work this out.

YesILikeItToo · 02/06/2017 08:19

Quite simple games you're playing, is it? I can't understand getting the phone out when they could just have been dealt round.
