To be scared of Labours Land tax

Dragongirl10 · 01/06/2017 15:11

Just read about this, Labour are proposing a Land Value Tax on any land owned, could cost thousands a year for anyone even with a small house, not just the rich....they have not publicised this at all.

People with modest homes could be forced to sell or go into debt, or be repossessed...

?

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 07/06/2017 13:19

claire

No one has said its a myth

PigletJohn · 07/06/2017 13:20

is it a myth?

It is certainly a myth that it is Labour Party policy or that it is proposed in their manifesto.

However it is perfectly true that it exists as a theoretical possibility, and it has been strongly recommended by the Daily Express and other Conservative campaigners.

As you know, the Daily Express and other Conservative campaigners have neither the responsibility nor the power to decide labour policy.

Dandandandandandandan · 07/06/2017 13:22

But it is right there as a possibility in the labour manifesto Confused And as it is the only alternative option that they name, it seems likely they have jack-all else to consider.

PigletJohn · 07/06/2017 13:24

Your lively imagination does you much credit.

Which other theoretical possibilities would you like to expound upon?

Dandandandandandandan · 07/06/2017 13:27

Unlike your blind optimism. Which will see us all plunged into a calamitous recession if you get your way. I guess labour voters are big fans of credit though!

WalkingOnLeg0 · 07/06/2017 14:46

Just watched David Lammy on the Daily Politics defending Labours proposed LVT. He sounded very much like its going to happen.

PigletJohn · 07/06/2017 15:07

It's a topsy-turvy world when people are expected to defend a something that is not a policy, when the accusations are based on wild imaginings and made-up figures.

PigletJohn · 07/06/2017 15:16

And I see Leg0 is again falsely claiming it is "proposed"

Thiscantreallybehappening · 07/06/2017 15:30

PigletJohn - It is on Page 86 of the Labour Manifesto. There are no figures yet they will consult but it is part of their policy and in their manifesto.

WalkingOnLeg0 · 07/06/2017 15:38

And I see Leg0 is again falsely claiming it is "proposed"
If its not likely why is a Labour MP able to say what level he thinks it will be set at and who its going to affect?

Thiscantreallybehappening · 07/06/2017 15:40

Leg0 - I didn't see Daily Politics today - did DL mention any specifics?

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 07/06/2017 15:46

this

It says something along the lines of

We are considering other options SUCH AS land values tax

It is not proposed, it is not (as yet) part of their policy

Personally i think they should have just left the bloody thing at 'other options ' as people seem to be struggling with the whole 'for example' bit

LadyinCement · 07/06/2017 15:47

So, PigletJohn, are free tuition fees not going to happen either? What about the increased tax on over £80K/£150K? What about the nationalisation of the railways?

Why is the land tax not going to happen but the handouts are definitely going ahead?

WalkingOnLeg0 · 07/06/2017 15:52

Some figures where mentioned, I didn't record it so cant say for sure what they were.

He has just been on SKY news again talking about it, he says its going to help the North and redistribute wealth from the South East. He did NOT deny it or even say it was 'just' a proposal.

Two4One2017 · 07/06/2017 15:54

It comes up on the doorstep now - it's in the manifesto on p86, there's evidence all over the place that McDonnell has been gagging for this for years.....most people can put 2+2 together....it will happen if Labour get in and it's in the manifesto so that the House of Lords won't stop it.

PigletJohn · 07/06/2017 15:54

I see Leg0 continues to falsely claim it is "proposed"

It's obviously a very important part of Conservative propaganda to keep hammering this lie forward.
