To be scared of Labours Land tax

Dragongirl10 · 01/06/2017 15:11

Just read about this, Labour are proposing a Land Value Tax on any land owned, could cost thousands a year for anyone even with a small house, not just the rich....they have not publicised this at all.

People with modest homes could be forced to sell or go into debt, or be repossessed...

So if Theresa was a member of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, I could quote one of their leaflets as official Conservative Party Policy. Thanks for expanding that, Clarinova.

What a fantastic insight into truth and logic you have.

Oliversmumsarmy · 06/06/2017 15:16

First, people – and also businesses – could decide to increase the occupation of the premises, for example, by taking in lodgers or sub-letting, or to relocate to smaller properties or to areas where land values were lower. This, indeed, is one of the long-term benefits of LVT – it encourages the better use of land

But who would buy the property if it has extortionate charges . The only way to sell would be to reduce the price substantially so makes the LVT a tax on a property not worth what the LVT people say it is worth. Would you then get a rebate.

It will also mean people objecting to any buildings or improvements in the area because it would mean they wouldn't get anything out of the improvements because they wouldn't be able to afford to live there.

It would certainly up the rent people pay.

Bombardier25966 · 06/06/2017 15:20

@Thiscant, thank you for your informed, balanced response. It makes a refreshing change from those that base their views on what the media tell them they should think.

Bombardier25966 · 06/06/2017 15:24

There is no suggestion by the Labour Party that a change in council tax/ business rates would result in extortionate charges.

All that has been said is that the current system will be reviewed. You make valid points as to the downsides of a land value tax, and these would be taken into account in any review.

Clavinova · 06/06/2017 15:27

PigletJohn
I could quote the Shadow Chancellor directly if you prefer;

"A Land Value Tax (LVT) would simplify matters and accords with our sense of justice. Land is a gift of nature and its value rises according to the social and economic environment to which all of us contribute."

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 06/06/2017 15:30

So

Tory taxes that they are refusing to tell anyone about

What do you think, high earners only or everyone

The 1% lib dems have suggested for everyone or higher

Anyone?

PigletJohn · 06/06/2017 15:31

Clarinova

"Land is a gift of nature and its value rises according to the social and economic environment to which all of us contribute."

Yes, I can see why you would believe that

Bombardier25966 · 06/06/2017 15:31

@Clavinova, you're sounding really desperate now.

John McDonnell likes the idea of a LVT. We know that. That does not mean the Labour Party will bring in a land value tax.

If you want to talk about cabinet members not always agreeing with the party line, how about Johnson and his constant gaffs? Or the senior team's complete inability to deliver the same line on income tax rises?

Bombardier25966 · 06/06/2017 15:33

@Rufus, if Tories follow form they'll go for rises on everyone but the wealthy Smile

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 06/06/2017 15:36

I agree bombardier

Funny that they are keeping so quiet about therir plans

If i was Jezza i might be tempted to just make up some bullshit about them charging a massive amount of tax

You know just make up a random number

Dandandandandandandan · 06/06/2017 15:36

And yet..... it's way more convincing than any of yours, pigletjohn

Clavinova · 06/06/2017 15:42

PigletJohn - these are John McDonnell's words - not mine!!!!

Is he not allowed his own opinion?

PigletJohn · 06/06/2017 15:46

Clarinova

do you mean that you think Land is not a gift of nature? and its value does not rise according to the social and economic environment to which all of us contribute?.

Dandandandandandandan · 06/06/2017 15:47

It's certainly not the case that everyone contributes, piglet.

Clavinova · 06/06/2017 15:49

Is he not allowed his own opinion?

Not when we might be paying for it!

Biker47 · 06/06/2017 15:50

How about every adult just pays a set charge for their council services instead? We could call it the community charge, or something.

Bombardier25966 · 06/06/2017 15:54

Not when we might be paying for it!

"Might" being the operative word. This whole discussion is based on nothing but conjecture. I have posted the Labour Party stance on the issue but ýou continue to ignore it. Why is that?

PigletJohn · 06/06/2017 15:56

I wonder how dandan manages to isolate himself so that his behaviour does not contribute to the social and economic environment.

Bombardier25966 · 06/06/2017 16:03

@PigletJohn, I call it ivory tower syndrome, they sit up there looking down on the rest of us, whilst blaming anyone but themselves for anything that is wrong with the world. Wink

Bombardier25966 · 06/06/2017 16:07

Posting again for @Clavinova. The Labour Party stance on land value tax:

Labour is the best and only option for working people. We would ensure that tax on property remains low, while the Conservatives cost you more. WLabour is the best and only option for working people. We would ensure that tax on property remains low, while the Conservatives cost you more. We won’t be taxing people’s gardens. The Tories are throwing around false claims to try and distract from their own policies.

Labour’s plan is for a fair taxation system where those on middle and lower incomes are protected. We have ruled out increasing VAT or National Insurance and we won’t put up income tax for anyone but the richest five per cent of the population. The Conservatives have failed to match this commitment. Theresa May would hit working people and pensioners with further tax rises.

The Conservatives want to deny this truth. They are trying to play politics and spread scare stories about what Labour is planning. They are deliberately trying to mislead people.

Here are the facts about our tax plans.

Labour’s will not be introducing a new tax on people’s homes

We won’t be taxing people’s gardens; it’s not going to happen. The Tories are simply throwing around false claims to try and distract from their own real policies: to hit pensioners and working people with a dementia tax, cuts to the Winter Fuel Allowance and further tax rises on middle and low earners.
Labour’s manifesto commits us to making council tax fairer: our plan is to see what needs to be done to ensure that working people don’t pay more. We'll look at how we can make council tax fairer but we’ll not be introducing a separate Land Value Tax on residential property.

Labour costs you less

Council tax is lower with Labour: Where Labour controls the local council, households will pay on average £336 less this year than those living in Conservative areas.
Conservatives cost you more: The Conservatives said they would keep council tax down, yet it is rising rapidly and will be 25 per cent higher by the end of the decade than in 2015. The average council tax per dwelling in a Labour council area is £1042.31, versus £1,378.45 in Tory council areas.

Labour will ensure a fair tax system. We will protect lower and middle earners in the tax system while the Tories refuse to rule out new tax increases for these people.

Labour’s sensible, fully-costed plans are the right approach for working people. We will build a country for the many not just a privileged few. We won’t be taxing people’s gardens. The Tories are throwing around false claims to try and distract from their own policies.

I know I might be dreaming in asking this but, for the sake of democracy, can people please stop spreading lies? If you're not sure if something is true or not, then take the time to find out before presenting it as fact.

An election won on lies is no win at all.

Veinarde · 06/06/2017 16:44

Bombardier25966 sounds like a mantra :)

Dandandandandandandan · 06/06/2017 16:48

Well gee, and there I was paying my great whack of tax, paying for private healthcare so not using the NHS, paying private school fees, so not taking up a state school place, doing a lot of consultancy work for charities for free so that they can help people - no, you're right, I have isolated myself entirely GrinGrinGrin

You and your comrade make are quite the comedy duo today.

Oliversmumsarmy · 06/06/2017 16:53

It was called the Poll Tax and there were riots to stop it
