To be scared of Labours Land tax

Just read about this, Labour are proposing a Land Value Tax on any land owned, could cost thousands a year for anyone even with a small house, not just the rich....they have not publicised this at all.

People with modest homes could be forced to sell or go into debt, or be repossessed...

Fullface on land tax here:. fullfact.org/economy/labours-land-value-tax-will-you-have-sell-your-garden/

A bit more about LVT here: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Land_value_tax

It's actually a pretty good idea, but I don't expect any of the Tory astroturfers to see it that way.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 01/06/2017 15:39

I was just going to link to Full Facts :)

Those Lib Dems and Greens are at it too! It apparently being a proposal to consider reforms to council tax and business rates.

Why is it that whenever someone queries a Labour proposal it's classed as "Tory scaremongering" and yet Labour voters (the loud opinionated Labour voters here that is, I'm sure there are plenty of quiet ones who actually weigh up the issues and decide on merit) can slag off everything that the Conservatives say without reason? I'd swear that if Corbyn declared that the earth was flat and the sun was made of cheese there would be the usual crowd who would agree with him and say that any voice to the contrary was lying. It's scary.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 01/06/2017 15:41

How hard you will be hit depends where you live.

The South East and particularly London will be hit hardest.

muckypup73 · 01/06/2017 15:42

Did you not mention this ia nother thread? theres no substance behind it and totally wrong to what you think, are you a Tory?

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 01/06/2017 15:43

Also, it's not in the small print for nothing. It's a huge vote loser and they know it.

If it was that good for everybody why aren't they selling it along with the rest of their populist proposals?

Orlantina · 01/06/2017 15:43

We will initiate a review into reforming council tax and business
rates and consider new options such as a land value tax, to ensure
local government has sustainable funding for the long term

Local Government and services need paying for. I am sure that Labour would not want to do anything to muck up any chance of reelection if elected.

5moreminutes · 01/06/2017 15:43

A Land Value Tax is a tax on the potential value of land itself, ignoring anything that's built on it. It isn’t being proposed as an additional tax, but as a potential replacement for council taxes and/or business rates.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 01/06/2017 15:43

I dunno about that Dinner. There are nutters in every part of the political spectrum.

When it comes to discussion about LVT there does seem to be an awful lot of scaremongering. I saw that as someone with more than one property.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 01/06/2017 15:44

Sorry Muckypup, why are you against people talking about it if it's nothing to worry about, as you say?

seoulsurvivor · 01/06/2017 15:45

People freak out over every tax change. At the end of the day, we need tax to pay for services. That's just how it is, how do you suggest the government raises money otherwise?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 01/06/2017 15:46

If it was that good for everybody why aren't they selling it along with the rest of their populist proposals?

Because as is shown in this thread, anything that is too complicated to explain in one sentence is going to be too complex for most voters to understand?

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 01/06/2017 15:47

Yes, 5moreminutes, but in many places it will raise council tax levels by a lot, again, depending on how high they put it of course.

But council tax will be higher.

There's no more without fire.

nocake · 01/06/2017 15:47

It's no accident that few of the credible news sources are covering this. Labour want to review council tax and business rates, which few would argue is a bad idea. A land tax is an option that would be considered (I'm skipping over the fact that land taxes are considered by most people to be progressive and fair) but until a review is done we don't actually know what will happen.

The Tories are seeing their huge lead being chipped away so they're now panicking and making stuff up to try and discredit Labour. The figures for the land tax are a complete fabrication... A lie.

PlymouthMaid1 · 01/06/2017 15:47

It wouldn't surprise me as the Labour party always seems to think that anyone who owns anything must be rich and therefore must hand it all over.

Orlantina · 01/06/2017 15:48

Meanwhile in the Conservative manifesto....

No mention of tax rises. Or keeping tax low.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 01/06/2017 15:48

No, it can be explained in simple terms.

We've done it here, on this thread.

It's not complicated, it's damaging.

AliceTown · 01/06/2017 15:48

Those who thinks it's not scaremongering - that it is actually something to worry about - can you provide a scenario to demonstrate what it is you're worried about, using evidence available?

I mean, for tenants it looks like a winner - no more council tax for us, and not liable for LVT!

Orlantina · 01/06/2017 15:49

It wouldn't surprise me as the Labour party always seems to think that anyone who owns anything must be rich and therefore must hand it all over

Why is council tax based on the value of the house?

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 01/06/2017 15:49

Another thing it will do is create more density in already overcrowded cities.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 01/06/2017 15:49

It has scared me.

5moreminutes · 01/06/2017 15:49

Chardonnays some people would pay more and some less under a land tax than under council tax. People with acres of grounds will pay more than they do now, people in small terraced properties will pay less. This seems - dare I say it - incredibly fair!

AliceTown · 01/06/2017 15:50

Full Fact is owned by a millionaire Tory donor isn't it?
