To not tip the Ocado driver?

Sayhellotothelittlefella · 31/05/2017 13:15

Just as a bit of background - I am usually the type of person who will leave a tip. I always tip my beautician, my hairdresser and the girl who washes my hair, in restaurants and the usual people at Christmas ( postman, bin men). However I have never thought to tip the Ocado driver, until my last delivery when there was that awkward 'deliberate pause' moment - exactly like on films - when it was obvious that I was meant to be tipping the guy. I've never noticed it on any other occasion but I'm panicking now as I've got a delivery due later and I don't know if I'm expected to tip them?

I have never tipped Ocado drivers or heard of anyone tipping supermarket delivery drivers apart from on here.

Hissy · 31/05/2017 13:17

He was probably waiting for you to return the BAGS for refund....

Aridane · 31/05/2017 13:19

lol

squoosh · 31/05/2017 13:19

I used to tip my delivery guy when I lived on the top floor of a Glasgow tenement. Four flights of stairs + no lift + heavy groceries = a tip.

If they're just humphing into a ground floor flat or house I wouldn't!

Sayhellotothelittlefella · 31/05/2017 13:21

Hissy it was just after I'd handed him the bags which is what made it so awkward, as if there was something else he was expecting. I didn't imagine it as DH was there as well and noticed it.

How awkward. What did you say?

"ALL DONE, BYE THEN"

MatildaTheCat · 31/05/2017 13:23

I never have and have never been made to feel it was remotely expected.

Do you tip the person who reads the gas metre or scans your shopping at the shops? Or the Hermes delivery guy?

PuppyMonkey · 31/05/2017 13:24

"...when it was obvious that I was meant to be tipping the guy."

Squoosh they just stand at the door and hand them to me - not even the whole 'deliver to the kitchen' service they advertise

DinnerIsServed · 31/05/2017 13:26

I don't tip delivery drivers but if I get really good service (and this includes couriers) I will send their customer service dept an email to tell them. I think it's nice to show appreciation but it doesn't need to be financial.

squoosh · 31/05/2017 13:27

Pah! Bugger that then.

Cheek of him.

DinnerIsServed · 31/05/2017 13:28

OP - they've probably just been to me before then because I always get asked where I want the bags and I always stand there at the door asking for them to be left at the front door. I can then dump them in the hall or wherever works best for me while they get the next lot. I've obviously conditioned them to stay outside Grin

Sayhellotothelittlefella · 31/05/2017 13:29

FakePlastic almost exactly that yes GrinBlush
Matilda that's my thoughts exactly- I asked DH if maybe we should have tipped but as he hates tipping he was bound to say no.
Glad I'm not the only one so far who didn't think it was a thing.

I tried to tip the Waitrose man at Christmas, but he refused because they aren't allowed to accept tips.

ItsNiceItsDifferentItsUnusual · 31/05/2017 13:35

Blimey it would never even occur to me to tip the shopping delivery person!

If he really was hanging around for a tip then that says a lot more about him than you.

Sayhellotothelittlefella · 31/05/2017 13:36

DinnerIsServed haha. Sometimes they get quite upset that they're meant to bring them in and sometimes they are very relieved but yes i usually fill in a survey sent be customer services

EssentialHummus · 31/05/2017 13:39

I really don't think they expect tips. I'll tip delivery drivers out on bikes in all weathers to get a hot pizza to me, but the Ocado guy? Not necessary or expected IMO.

Katedotness1963 · 31/05/2017 13:42

I always tipped the delivery driver. Only one looked uncomfortable and muttered something about not thinking it was allowed but took it when I said the others did. Our house was a bit hard to find and they couldn't park by it. They took it into the house and helped me unpack it and took any plastic bags away for recycling.

Sayhellotothelittlefella · 31/05/2017 13:42

I'm so pleased most people think the same. I can relax a bit now

StoatofDisarray · 31/05/2017 13:47

I checked the first time I ordered from Ocado, and the driver told me it's not normal to tip them. I don't tip for postal/other deliveries either. I always tip people delivering hot food.

jelliebelly · 31/05/2017 13:49

Have never tipped and we've used ocado regularly for over 10 years - did you ask him what he was waiting for??

harderandharder2breathe · 31/05/2017 13:51

Nope never tipped the Tesco or Asda delivery driver. Nor has my mother ever tipped Iceland, Tesco or Ocado all of which she's used over the last 17 years.

I'm polite, I always smile and thank them. I live in a ground floor flat with parking and I only ever have them leave stuff in the hallway so no traipsing up stairs or into my kitchen.

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 31/05/2017 13:52

I'm sure I read on mumsnet that it's against the rules of employment to accept a tip from customers if you are an Ocado driver.
I think it came up one Christmas when people were asking about tipping and an employee of Ocado posted saying the above.

RebootYourEngine · 31/05/2017 13:52

I dont tip at all however i cant see shopping delivery drivers being allowed to accept it.

SummerKelly · 31/05/2017 13:53

Do people do this? It's never occurred to me. How much would you tip?
