Disgusted with Theresa

For body shaming JC, that is just beyond vile and nasty. Glad it's looking like they will not win.

She is over.

OP posts:
AllMyBestFriendsAreMetalheads · 31/05/2017 09:35

If JC had said it about May, the Conservatives would have made it into even more YouTube adverts.

metspengler · 31/05/2017 09:35

he would know as soon as she started that quotation

As did most long time Labour voters. Zero momentum members/Corbynites seem to have picked up on it and got the joke though, which will come as no surprise at all to those in Labour whose party was hijacked by them. They are nothing to do with Labour they are something else.

Anyway as I said it's a bit rich to have a pity party over JC given his background. Theresa May could have picked much, much nastier jokes more easily, he's a minefield.

The thing that shocked me most was her doing a joke and it more or less working. A true wtf moment given how seriously she tries to come across usually.

Frankiestein401 · 31/05/2017 09:36

Whether tm can't do small talk or jc isn't 'strong and stable' is kind of academic - the core negotiations are done by civil servants and the politicians given 'position papers' / 'briefing papers' at which point it's more about them keeping to an agreed batna (best alternative to a negotiated agreement) when the politicians do their monthly get together.

So it's more about reading, understanding and applying the brief - as for how much part trust plays in any negotiation - its a matter of opinion - I happen to think it's important.

MakeJam · 31/05/2017 09:38

It was a cheap nasty jibe.

NotYoda · 31/05/2017 09:39

Peregrina

I don't know

It just strikes me as distinctly odd, given that

a) she's explicitly said in the past that she's not interested in the politicas of personal attack (or whatever phrase she used)
b) she has been, up until recently, popular herself, even with people who would have baulked at voting Tory
c) but the gap is narrowing between the two parties and she' knows he's the wobbly bit for Labour
d) if she attacks on looks she'll get it back 10x (as a woman)

It looks desperate. It makes some think badly of her. I don't know if it makes the ones who waver about Corbyn more or less determined to vote for him.

It's a return to 'the nasty party" that she's distancing herself from

Is someone in Strategy suggesting trumpesque rude and personal quips are the way to go?

goldaspickledfruit · 31/05/2017 09:40

I don't think she's very astute politically
I agree, she's alienated many in her party, which is partly why this campaign is falling apart so spectacularly. Bodes poorly for her whatever happens.

Chaotica · 31/05/2017 09:40

She has no strong and stable policies, so she's reduced to pathetic (and frankly nasty) personal attacks. I'm not a tory but I thought more of May before this.

And so far, her moves towards Brexit negotiations have made us the laughing stock of Europe been so efficient. Wink

Giddyaunt18 · 31/05/2017 09:44

It's a figure of speech. Aren't people educated any more?
It would have been a figure of speech if she had left it there but...

She added: “I know that's an image that doesn't bear thinking about but actually this is very serious.”

Sniggering ensued. Not a figure of speech.

histinyhandsarefrozen · 31/05/2017 09:46

I think a funny ha ha kind of politician could have pulled it off, not May though, it sounds crude and looks desperate.

hackmum · 31/05/2017 09:47

Exactly, Giddyaunt18 - and what was so lamentable about it was that the smutty dig afterwards completely undermined the seriousness of the point she was claiming to make. She has a tin ear for what's appropriate.

Giddyaunt18 · 31/05/2017 09:49

When she added the 'serious ' comment I laughed. Exactly Theresa!!!!

NotYoda · 31/05/2017 09:49

histiny

I would have thought badly of anyone who said that

But I agree that she couldn't pull it off

It does look desperate or it looks like she's exposing herself for what she really is. I personally think it's the former

Jupitar · 31/05/2017 09:51

My only issue with Corbyn is that he basically hid during the referendum campaign.

Apparently he did, but the press was too busy focusing on what the tories were doing, his own constituency voted mainly remain as did most other places where he campaigned

AllMyBestFriendsAreMetalheads · 31/05/2017 09:52

Having watched PMQs before, this seems to be what politics is all about though, trying to make snide jokes at the opposition and sniggering in the back benches in between playing candy crush.

Gideon used to do it in his budget announcements too, smirking to himself as he dropped a funny.

It's what the kids call 'bantz' innit?

Orlantina · 31/05/2017 09:53

It's exactly how the Tories behave during PMQs.

She is as bad as the other Tories. Laughing and dismissing the Opposition who are talking about the NHS and education.

With cheap gibes.

BBC Trending, The rise of Tory attack ads on Facebook
www.bbc.co.uk/news/blogs-trending-40059846

I have a feeling she's just let the cat out of the bag again with this one too. Potential Tory voters are receiving individualised campaign ads which are not publicly available. Personalised attacks on appearance may be small beer compared to what else is being written.

Newsnight tonight is doing a special on social media and this election

Orlantina · 31/05/2017 09:57

I've had the attack ads on Corbyn.

It's supposed to be about the policies.

AllMyBestFriendsAreMetalheads · 31/05/2017 09:59

I've heard about the targeted advertising on FaceBook, and I was surprised to see their YouTube adverts as well. I don't know enough about YT advertising to know whether that's targeted too. I'm guessing not as they appeared on the channels that my 6 year old watches.

hackmum · 31/05/2017 10:00

Mrs Thatcher was similarly humourless. When Jim Callaghan was PM, he described himself as being like Moses leading the people out of the wilderness. Thatcher's speechwriters wrote an attacking conference speech for her that included the line: "So my message to Moses is this: keep taking the tablets."

Good crack, right? But when she rehearsed it, she changed it to: "Keep taking the Pill." Because she just didn't get the pun on "tablets". And she thought a reference to the "Pill" was funny because it was a bit smutty, even though it made no sense as a joke. Her speechwriters spent ages convincing her that "tablets" worked better.

Thank you for making the point that it will be civil servants actually doing the Brexit negotiations. It's why some of their retired senior people were making the point before the election was called, that due largely to civil service staff cuts, they don't have the capacity to do this.

JanetBrown2015 · 31/05/2017 10:04

People always pick on women and suggest we have no sense of humour.

Vote May. You know it's best.

YellowPrimula · 31/05/2017 10:06

The thing is that she was quoting Bevan from the 1950s but no one will remember that now ,not even the die hard Labour oldies.
How would it have if he had said that about her , she does seem to have an empathy bypass . Then when she was pressed on it in the channel 5 interview she should have just apologised, admitted it was an inappropriate reference and moved on , but no she tried to justify it , very badly, pretending that the questioner was being g disingenuous when it was her . She comes across really badly when she behaves like everyone is more stupid than her .Surely she can see this .

Orlantina · 31/05/2017 10:07

People always pick on women and suggest we have no sense of humour

This has fuck all to do with her being a woman and far more with her just saying something inappropriate.

There's a time and a place for jokes and appropriate jokes.

NotYoda · 31/05/2017 10:07

janet

Now you are a comedienne Grin

Jupitar · 31/05/2017 10:09

The conservative party have somehow got my email address and I've received emails from"Theresa", "Boris" and "Philip" not one of the emails has stated what the conservatives are going to do they are all just attacks on Corbyn, or Comrade Corbyn as the Boris one called him, absolutely pathetic. I've tried replying but they don't seem to want to take the hint and take me off their list 😂
