Very embarrassing, lost the figures for free childcare. Not giving me much faith to be honest! Are you listening?

Yes the thing about May is that she doesn't even see the problem. Aside from poor people being lazy.

neonrainbow · 30/05/2017 12:55

Where are they getting these idiotic aggressive interviewers from? If you're going to ask a question then let them answer for gods sake.

LovelyBath77 · 30/05/2017 12:57

Hmm, one of first replies, DawnDonna - Phillip Hammond did the same thing, as have others. It's an election campaign, sometimes people from all parties don't have what's needed to hand. It was not a car crash.

The way I see it is that all parties want to be popular and will shift their policies towards whichever way they feel the wind is blowing. If you want to see more socialist policies and more spent on social care, the NHS, education and other parts of the welfare state you have to vote for it even if you think Labour will not win because that will help move the other parties more towards that.

We've already seen it with things like the Conservatives adopting policy that was previously Labour or UKIP.

Even if they don't win the election (and really who knows what people will do when the polls for Brexit got it so wrong) if there are enough Labour votes I'm fairly confident we will see the other parties adopting a more centre-ist or centre Left agenda.

LovelyBath77 · 30/05/2017 12:57

I think he got plenty of chances to answer.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 30/05/2017 12:59

Ok, I missed that. I disagree with that post. It was a car crash.

I don't think it needed to be.

You can leave off the Hmm. You're no Emma Barnett Wink

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 30/05/2017 13:00

She's from The Times and The Telegraph neon

It's a shame because I've heard her do some much better interviews where she really draws people out. She was just so fighty and seemed to have picked her angle before she even began.

Figaro2017 · 30/05/2017 13:02

I think that's the problem. Politicians are notorious for not answering the question and for derailing onto subjects they want to talk about.

Let's not forget, the parties spend fortunes on media training. I assume aggressive interviews are, in part, an attempt to get the interviewee to answer the question asked.

Bluntness100 · 30/05/2017 13:02

His web chat wasn't much better. Genuinely unsure why he bothered.

neonrainbow · 30/05/2017 13:05

Following the right wing media angle of attacking everything vaguely left wing then. Paxman was an embarassment. Faizal Islam managed to be a reasonable human being last night and controlled the questions while allowing corbyn and may to speak. Its not hard to interview someone without being aggressive and rude.

NoLotteryWinYet · 30/05/2017 13:06

yes, he didn't engage with any detail in the web chat at all. I'm sure that works better from a vote winning perspective.

MacarenaFerreiro · 30/05/2017 13:06

Just saw the clip on the lunchtime news - he's obviously read the same intterview preparation book as Diane Abbott.

Shambles. Unprofessional. Absolutely dreadful and I cannot see why some people are treating him like some sort of Messiah.

makeourfuture · 30/05/2017 13:06

And yet Tory Debt continues to grow and grow.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 30/05/2017 13:07

Well what with Women's Hour and mumsnet chat debacle not a great day for JC

mynotsoperfectlife · 30/05/2017 13:07

The web chat here really was a waste of time.

HumphreyCobblers · 30/05/2017 13:07

Interviewers have always been LAUDED for behaving like this, asking 'difficult' questions, not letting politicians get away with lying etc. The tide of opinion seems to be turning away from this as people are realising it generates more heat than light.

I can decided for myself if a politician is lying, telling the truth, answering the question etc, I don't need a journalist to decide what the story is beforehand or spend the whole interview trying to trap the subject into an embarrassing revelation Hmm

John Humphries is the worst for this.

Eddie Mair is brilliant at asking the difficult questions but letting people actually answer.

neonrainbow · 30/05/2017 13:14

Last night if faizal was not happy with the answer he challenged them politely but firmly and asked them to clarify. Contrast to paxman aggressively demanding corbyn explain why abolishing the monarchy wasnt in the manifesto as though a manifesto is all about a leader's personal beliefs Hmm. What a waste of a question. Im so sick of the media manipulating how the general public should think.

WalkingOnLeg0 · 30/05/2017 13:20

What a car crash. If people want to crash our country then Jeremy is the man to do it.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 30/05/2017 13:22

The people attacking Emma Barnett on twitter are disgraceful.

neonrainbow · 30/05/2017 13:22

Oh yes because things are going so well under the tories aren't they?

cookerybookaddict · 30/05/2017 13:26

Agree - the web chat was a complete waste of time.

My question (or one very similar) about corporation tax and how they'll make up the shortfall when banks start moving operations to mainland Europe, was picked up by the Guardian, but as I expected he chose not to answer it. From the news this morning, it sounds as though they're considering a Land Valuation Tax as a means of raising extra revenue. I'm left wondering what other tax bombshells they might hit us with. It's pretty obvious that while their policies have been costed, the funding looks far from certain.

Figaro2017 · 30/05/2017 13:28

Ah neon. So if the an interviewer had taken the same tone with a Tory MP would they also be 'idiotic'?

waitforitfdear · 30/05/2017 13:30

Emma is brilliant she's on five live and a consummate professional.

Morons on twitter just need ignoring

MacarenaFerreiro · 30/05/2017 13:30

How bad does Jeremy Corbyn have to be before the blinkered Labour voters wil admit that he's not PM material?

Seriously, it's cult-like. Do not criticise Jeremy. Blame anyone/everything else for Jeremy's failings. Turn criticism back to Theresa May, as if she were there, in the corner of the radio studio pole dancing to put poor Jeremy off his stride. Never, never acknowledge that Jeremy is anything but the second coming and the saviour of us all.

I used to vote Labour. Certainly won't be at the moment with people like him, Abbott and that screechy Angela woman on the front bench. Why can't Labour hardliners see that if they want power they have to apply to a wider demographic than the hard left and students?

waitforitfdear · 30/05/2017 13:31

Nikki Campbell is gently probing too and interviews well. Paxmsn is rubbish
