How are you planning to vote if you earn over £80,000

Just wondering the above really.
I can't stand the conservatives and always assumed I would vote Labour in this election, however with the tax increase over £80k I feel I'd be shooting myself in the foot a bit.
What do others think?

Labour (a tactical vote to try and get rid of the current Tory MP). I'd vote LibDem if I didn't live in a Labour/Tory marginal though.

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 28/05/2017 20:48

cardi

When did i say it would?

Where have i said that i dont think extra tax should be paid?

If people are going to bandy about ...its only an extra £179

I think its only fair to say that its on top of 4.5k that they are already paying

You will hopefully also note that at no time did i agree with the rest of blunts post...because i dont agree with the rest of blunts post

(Although she does have a point about the waste)

Moanyoldcow · 28/05/2017 20:49

Bluntness - if you earn £120k a year you pay £3391 in tax and £490 in NI - less than £4K atm rising to less than £4200 under the Labour proposals.

I don't expect people to agree with me or my opinions but I do expect the arguments to contain accurate information.

ladyme · 28/05/2017 20:49

We both earn over £80k so will be a double whammy. But we are both going to vote labour because wealth isn't about what your bank balance says is it?

firawla · 28/05/2017 20:50

I'm thinking I'll vote lib dem, dh labour (he's actually the over 80k earner not me)

featherland · 28/05/2017 20:51

Labour. Earn over 80k in my own business. Also have elderly parents. Believe me, care costs are crippling. And we are rich. I don't want to live in a country where only rich people have dignity when they get old.

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 28/05/2017 20:52

moany

Dammit i was right with my approximate figure of 4k

Should have stuck with that...i had a bit of a panic and changed it

HopelesslydevotedtoGu · 28/05/2017 20:52

Lib Dem.

They are closest to my opinions, although by no means a perfect fit.

I would rather pay more tax to have better public services. Unless you are extremely rich and utterly insulated from the world around you, I think you are personally better off with good public services rather than lower tax.

I would add though that making house prices more affordable would be the number one change that would benefit our family now, and I would vote for a party that would actually tackle that.

Madbengalmum · 28/05/2017 20:53

Certainly wont be voting for the rudderless labour party. They can't do their sums and before we know it we will be at 90% tax.
The thought of either JC or Dianne Abbot making decisions about my future fills me with absolute dread.

MarciaBlaine · 28/05/2017 20:57

Labour. Happy to pay more tax - go me ;-) I'm a normal LibDem voter but UKIP got more votes in the last election than they did. So I am voting against a solid Tory seat. The bloke is a right pre Brexit numskull so I cannot vote for him whatever.

Moanyoldcow · 28/05/2017 20:57

My calculations are not disingenuous - they are 100% accurate based on the proposed bandings vs current bandings.

I do not for one second think high earners are not paying a lot and I would personally be in favour of a tax increases hitting higher earners too (as opposed to additional rate earners) which would affect my household.

But we need to keep it in perspective. The hyperbole surrounding the proposed increases makes it sound like Labour want to penalise high earners and punish success when they are taking total taxation from 26% to 26% at £85k and 36% to 36.3%(ish) at £123k.

It's not all about me - I want the worst off to be doing better and I'm happy if that comes a little at my expense.

Moanyoldcow · 28/05/2017 20:59

Bah! 26% to 27% at £85k

LouHotel · 28/05/2017 21:01

Labour as my position is dependant on their being 100's of people in the same company working for minimum wage. I can afford a tax hike they can't afford more cuts to public services.

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 28/05/2017 21:01

I think you misunderstood what i meant moany or more likely i didnt explain myself Smile

I know your figures are correct but i feel it would be better to show the full amounts as you worked out as approximately 4000 and 4200

I think some people dont realise how much tax anybody pays rich or poor and its useful to see the actual figures

bellamcpoopants · 28/05/2017 21:05

Both dh and I earn six figures and we have different opinions on how to vote! I am a Labour Party member and will obviously vote labour; although we may be hit by higher taxation (including corporation tax) I have no problems paying more in order to ensure that the NHS and social welfare are adequately funded. The NHS (and specifically mental health services) saved my life, enabling me to be in the position I am today. And labour initiatives such as child tax credits meant I could carry on working to keep my career going when I had to leave an abusive marriage and helped to keep a roof over my children's heads when childcare equalled my salary!

Dh torments me by threatening to vote conservative, but in reality will probably vote lib dem!

A good point was made by an earlier poster about saving on tuition fees far outweighing extra taxation paid; my children are quite a way away from university so this is not a particular concern for us at the moment, but I can see this resonating with a lot of people.

Within friends and colleagues earning similar amounts I'd say it is a pretty even split between labour and Tory; a lot work (or have partners working) in the NHS and so this is a particular factor - interestingly though the Lib Dems are not doing as well as I'd have expected; maybe because they are not seen as a viable option? But I also agree with another earlier poster who said that a lot of wealthy people are particularly penny-pinching... I also see this!

Moanyoldcow · 28/05/2017 21:10

Rufus - I totally agree with you about seeing actual figs. Sorry I misunderstood your post Smile

bambisims · 28/05/2017 21:12

Conservative.

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 28/05/2017 21:12

No it was more likely my inability to type a coherent post moany Smile

howtovote · 28/05/2017 21:16

Thanks for all your comments.
Just to be clear I'm not basing my vote on the tax issue, rather it's one of a number of things I'm considering.

OP posts:
Joey7t8 · 28/05/2017 21:23

Most people focussing on personal tax rises. What are opinions ok the proposed increase in corporation tax from 20-26%?

I personally think that it'd be a disaster, particularly post Brexit, and result in fewer big businesses basing themselves in the U.K.

MarciaBlaine · 28/05/2017 21:35

It corporation taxes are much higher elsewhere. Places they could go to avoid tax are limited. Avoiding Brexit of course is another issue.

elastamum · 28/05/2017 21:39

Labour. Don't mind paying more tax for a fairer society

HornyTortoise · 28/05/2017 21:40

Not lucky enough to earn anywhere near the higher rate tax.

My dad does though. His salary is around 90k (give or take overtime and such) and plans on voting Labour. Not sure if he has worked this out wrong but he reckons the extra tax will 'only' be an extra few hundred a month? When already taxed around 2k per month he says the extra is pretty insignificant. He also reckons the extra will only be on 10k of his earnings, not the full 90? As its only on the amount OVER the threshold? I have even seen some claim they will reduce their working hours to purposely bring their salary down to 79,999 in order to 'beat' the tax. If so, it seems a lot of people on here don't understand this policy as some seem to think they will be taxed extra on their entire income. Of course it could be my dad who is misunderstanding it. But he also says after watching how people he knows have been hit by the endless cuts by the Tories, even if his personal tax was raised a lot more by Labour, he could not bring himself to vote Tory (and he sees anything except Lab/Con as a wasted vote, which sadly, I tend to agree with).

TakeThatFuckingDressOffNow · 28/05/2017 21:40

Same same Hainault. I'm just trying to keep the Tories out! Progressive taxation is fair.

TheSecretMrsFairbrother · 28/05/2017 21:41

DH and I (he's a higher earner) are voting Green.

Labour don't really turn up where we are, cold day in hell before we vote Tory and we have concerns about the Lib Dem candidate.

Yes, we know that you vote for the party rather than the personality of the candidate but we've known him for years and there's no way he's fit to represent our constituency in Westminster.

Sorry, long answer to a short question.
