How are you planning to vote if you earn over £80,000

Just wondering the above really.
I can't stand the conservatives and always assumed I would vote Labour in this election, however with the tax increase over £80k I feel I'd be shooting myself in the foot a bit.
What do others think?

OP posts:
HornyTortoise · 28/05/2017 21:45

In reality for people on 80-100k it will be only be £400 extra per annum. So peanuts to a big earner.

Oh dear. My father has worked this out as a few hundred per month, not year. Given he is happy even with a few hundred extra per month, then I would bet he will be over the moon if its only a few hundred per year xD

Madbengalmum · 28/05/2017 21:45

Also do remember OP that alot of mumsnet is generally politically scewed towards the left, or at least I have found it to be so in the past, so if you want a biased view then your best bet is to take a look at what each party stands for and which you personally identify more with. For me asking aload of random individuals is probably not your best idea.

NanooCov · 28/05/2017 21:48

Same way I have voted before earning over £80k. Liberal Democrat. I can't tolerate the awful changes the Conservatives have made to disability benefits but equally don't trust or believe that Labour's manifesto promises won't end up with the country spiralling deeper into debt leading to further years of horrific cuts on social care, welfare and he NHS when it becomes apparent their plans are not sustainable.

Smallangryplanet · 28/05/2017 21:57

Labour.

SheSaidHeSaid · 28/05/2017 21:59

Lib dem

HornyTortoise · 28/05/2017 22:00

When I earned over 80k I worked a pretty standard 9-6 ish, it wasn't particularly stressful. DH now earns over 80k and works from home, usually 8-5. He goes away every now and then but definitely wouldn't say he's stressed, as he's good at his job and knows what he's doing.
Higher pay doesn't necessarily mean more stress.

I have to say, the highest paid job I ever had was also the least stressful (and oddly enough, less hours too)

Obviously this isn't true of all professions..and I am sure a lot of highly paid people do have very stressful jobs. but this more money = more work thing isn't always true. Carers and such are paid peanuts compared to other jobs, and caring I would say is probably one of the most stressful jobs there is.

CasperGutman · 28/05/2017 22:07

My wife earns significantly more than £80k. I'm currently a SAHP. We're both voting Labour.

MontyPythonsFlyingFuck · 28/05/2017 22:09

"I'm sick to the back teeth of the amount of money wasted in local councils and NHS."

Do elucidate, Bluntness. Are you aware that the NHS costs less than any comparable healthcare system in the developed world (and almost half what the US spends on healthcare, for better overall outcomes)? Where is all this mythical waste, other than in the pages of the Daily Mail?

puglife15 · 28/05/2017 22:10

I'm better off under a Tory govt but I'd never vote for them.

I guess it's a matter of principles, attitude, and what you think is best for the country.

Personally I'd rather we had a more equal society, less children in poverty, better supported public services and the Tories are not the party to deliver that.

RoccoW14 · 28/05/2017 22:14

I would love to vote Labour in this election, but they're campaigning on a bunch of ridiculous follies. I've only ever voted Conservative and am intrinsically that way inclined, in terms of lower taxes and a smaller government. However, the arrogance and stupidity of the EU referendum, combined with the lunacy of going for the hardest possible Brexit, including possibly leaving without any deal, makes voting for that shower on par with self immolation.

So, to Labour.. adding VAT to private school fees: NO WAY!!

Charging more taxes on private health insurance: NO WAY!!

Are they completely unaware that people who fork out large sums to go private are saving considerable amounts to the state? If anything, governments should subsidise private health and education, means test the state pension etc..

I have only two choices. With the first past the post system it's either Conservative or Labour in my constituency.. and they both stink!!

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 28/05/2017 22:29

rocco

I have no idea about private schools

But all private healthcare cover does is let you jump the queue

Aghaidh · 28/05/2017 22:30

Voting tactically, so Lib Dems it is. First time ever not voting for Labour, but recently moved house and they don't stand a chance in my constituency. I shouldn't be getting tax breaks while junior doctor friends are struggling because the budget has the, losing out on hundreds. Just not right.

RoccoW14 · 28/05/2017 22:34

Private healthcare is not just about jumping the queue. If you've ever had the misfortune of being admitted to an NHS hospital you would have experienced the complete lack of information, privacy, hygiene etc.

Smallangryplanet · 28/05/2017 22:34

I don't trust Conservatives with education and the NHS.

RoccoW14 · 28/05/2017 22:36

I've got a postal vote sitting next to me and in all likelihood I'm going to bin it. I'm disgusted with the lack of any decent option!

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 28/05/2017 22:39

rocco

Private healthcare is about let you jump the queue

Obviously there are other benefits such as a private room and nice sandwiches

But it does not relieve the nhs of anything

they are not saving the state anything.

As i say, no idea about private schools

Miniwookie · 28/05/2017 22:46

My DH earns over 80k and we are both voting Labour because our principles cannot be bought for a few hundred quid a year. Tory tax cuts infuriate me.

RoccoW14 · 28/05/2017 22:47

Paying privately for a medical procedure saves the state / NHS a considerable amount of money.

Zone2mum · 28/05/2017 22:48

Lib Dem. Because I think leaving the single market and customs union will be a bloody disaster for Britain.

Captainj1 · 28/05/2017 22:49

I just found out I'm working away the week of the election so unless I can sort out a postal vote at short notice I won't be voting. My constituency is very Tory anyway so it won't matter. I've never voted Tory but I think the labour manifesto is just trying to grab headlines not actually think about what the country really needs.

Gah81 · 28/05/2017 22:52

Happy to pay some more tax for decent public services but think Corbyn would make an appalling leader. Lib Dems get my (reluctant) vote - an entirely uninspiring and chaotic lot this election... first time I have ever been tempted tempted to spoil my ballot.

Gah81 · 28/05/2017 22:52

Captainj1 you can still organise a proxy vote I think - believe deadline is 31st May.

mummabearfoyrbabybears · 28/05/2017 22:55

Conservatives always, no matter what.

Tapandgo · 28/05/2017 22:58

I live in England - so it's Labour for me. The only choice against this odious government. (I have issues with Labour as it is now, but more serious issues with Tories)

It's not all about personal wealth/tax, it's about the common good - good foundations for all now and for the future generations.

(If I lived in Scotland I'd vote SNP - Scotland should get stuck with a government they never voted for)

SheRaaarghPrincessOfPower · 28/05/2017 22:58

"I work very hard and a lot of hours in a stressful job."

So do most of the working class, earning a quarter of what you do.

Fucking hate this attitude that just because you earn more you've really worked for it. Wtf do you think everybody else does, a half arsed job?

BTW half the people I know on amounts approaching 6 figures are there because they're lucky and in certain industries that happen to pay a lot. They don't work any harder for their money than nurses or teachers, or normal 9-5 people doing standard jobs. Somehow though, they think they're better, that they've really earned it.
It's infuriating
