DH taking piss out of my arm bands

NurseScorne · 27/05/2017 21:45

Went swimming with DH this morning and he was constantly ripping the piss out of my arm bands. I've told him before about this and how it puts me off going swimming at all. AIBU to refuse to go with him in future? He says I'M embarrassing HIM

She's using a swimming aid in a swimming pool - what on earth is ridiculous about someone who can't swim, using flotation devices to help her feel safe in the water?

If she was wandering down the King's Road wearing armbands, then I'd think you have a point. But if it's embarrassing to wear swimming aids in a swimming pool then I can only assume that your issue is with the fact that she needs them at all in the first place. Which is pretty sad.

PaulDacresFeministConscience · 28/05/2017 16:26

And 'entitled'? Really?

This thread is batshit.

HildaOg · 28/05/2017 16:34

She doesn't need them. They're no help to an adult. She is just making herself look ridiculous.

keeplooking · 28/05/2017 16:36

Yes, they are!! I taught myself to swim, using armbands, after 50 years of not being able to swim.

Ocicat · 28/05/2017 16:43

Wow, Hilda, does it hurt to have a stick that far up your arse?

PaulDacresFeministConscience · 28/05/2017 16:43

Isn't the OP the best judge of whether she needs them or not and whether she finds them helpful?

I've seen adults who can't swim using various aids - including arm bands - to help them learn. They didn't look ridiculous; they just looked like people who were learning to swim.

MissBax · 28/05/2017 16:50

Hilda - I don't think I've ever seen you write anything that isn't negative and miserable towards others.
OP - good on you for learning to swim! I love swimming! I'm sure him laughing isn't intended to hurt you though - if my OH was wearing them I'd probably have a little chuckle but I would still support him fully.

Tapandgo · 28/05/2017 16:55

I've said earlier that I was taught to swim by an instructor late in life and began with armbands. They were not inflatable ones - solid rubber ones. I had a lifelong fear of water, and these made me (and the others using them - some learning in their 60's) feel safe.
I couldn't give a monkeys what anybody else thought - I learned to swim!

ErrolTheDragon · 28/05/2017 18:54

I'd be embarrassed if I had a DP willing to post such nasty, petty and (because of the evidence of people asserting yes, armbands can help adults learn to swim) plain stupid posts.

Tapandgo · 28/05/2017 19:53

Errol - I agree. There is something very wrong with laughing at people trying to learn something however they can. To think your husband would do it to you is horrendous.

CaptainBraandPants · 28/05/2017 20:02

I see the OP hasn't returned.
What a surprise.

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 28/05/2017 20:11

There are some lovely people on this thread, aren't there?

I bet the charmers who would laugh at OP's armbands are the same ones who laugh at fat women jogging.

notangelinajolie · 28/05/2017 20:16

Ditch the armbands. They won't help you learn to swim. And get an instructor.

keeplooking · 28/05/2017 20:29

Oh, ffs. I give up!

We know this is AIBU and responses may be, ahem, robust at times, but can we remind people we're here to make parents lives easier, and our rules on personal attacks? Thanks to everyone who has offered the OP support. Flowers

Tapandgo · 28/05/2017 21:54

Hopefully things will go swimmingly now 😃

SparklyMagpie · 28/05/2017 21:56

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans couldn't agree more

EvilDoctorBallerinaDuck · 28/05/2017 22:00

Tell him to fuck off.
