AIBU to feel like giving up on the UK

My OH is EU born, but has been living here with me and working , paying tax (go those who read the Daily Mail this may shock you)for 20 yrs. He has started his own business and is well respected in his industry. I've always worked in advocacy/counselling/support jobs, I am struggling to get back into work despite years of experience and training because of the lack of funding for these services.

I feel like accepting we have to leave the UK for the sake of our DD. I know so many people in this situation, and feel really sad that every day I hear stories like this...
"I work in the City as does my French partner: the European bankers, lawyers and asset managers are all talking about how London has changed for them now and are thinking it may be time to head home."
My husband feels the same.

*Try visiting Eastern Europe or even parts of France and Spain as a non white person and THEN youll see what a nasty and racist country can really be like

Quite, as POC friends of mine including my boyfriend have told me first hand. *

So now you are talking about parts of a few countries rather than all of the continent of Europe? Slightly different, don't you think?

seoulsurvivor · 26/05/2017 10:37

I have taught people from almost all European countries, plus lived in Europe for about 10 years. It is far more acceptable to say casually racist things in other places than in the UK. Even liberal-minded Europeans are generally quite ok with saying stuff about how dark someone's skin is, or how Turkish kids don't speak German properly, or how black people all steal stuff.

Not saying every European is like this, but in my experience, British people are a lot more careful in how they speak.

DonaldJBottyburp · 26/05/2017 10:38

Where will you go given that we are basically watching Western European civilisation die horribly in slow motion in front of our eyes.

DH and I discussed emigration (I would like to go somewhere more tidy and crime-free) and he made exactly this point, and it's right. Most of the western world is going down the toilet in similar ways, your only hope is somewhere remote and you can live somewhere remote, anywhere.

Then he started talking about moving to Australia but anywhere with spiders like that can fuck right off.

NoLoveofMine · 26/05/2017 10:39

No, I believe there's far more racism in European countries than there is in the UK and that the UK is far better integrated and with such a bigger variation of people from all over the world than exists in any European country (the latter is indisputable).

MissionItsPossible · 26/05/2017 10:39

Just because it you want LEAVING to be a good thing won't make it so

And just because you want LEAVING to be a bad thing/fail won't make it so either. We are all in the same boat as we don't know what's going to happen.

I don't think my comments were callous. You asked if you were being unreasonable and I said yes, and explained why. Aside from the uncertainty that I have repeatedly said I understand and can sympathise with, nobody has said how London has changed.

I knew that the comment in quotes wasn't yours as well.

To all those that say "You have ruined it for all of us" and "this is on your heads" I wonder that if this IS a success, they will still be leaving a thriving UK and not reaping the benefits?

Madbengalmum · 26/05/2017 10:39

So you dont think that every other european ecomony is going to be "wiped out"as you so say? Most of our economic situations are inter linked, all of the european union members are shitting themselves. The end of the euro is in sight once they all start dropping out of it.

olliegarchy99 · 26/05/2017 10:39

YABU - so go and follow the money Hmm

artycakemaker · 26/05/2017 10:40

And Ido wish that people would not scoff when people in situations like ine say we are worried and the future is uncertain. It is my reality, just because you may think Brexit was A Good Thing does not change that for many of us it IS a difficult time. NO-ONE knows anything yet about what will happen- the EU are playing hardball with us and have made it clear they will make things as difficult and as painful (and as expensive) as possible. That AFFECTS some people, including me and my family.

I am being stoic about it IRL though.

MumIsRunningAMarathon · 26/05/2017 10:41

Dramalamas all over MN right now

HeyHoThereYouGo657 · 26/05/2017 10:42

What Mission said in first post of hers/his.

So what if bankers, lawyers and others feel its changed . Most are greedy self serving things anyway .

Go if you want , stay if you want . But why yet another stealth Brexit bashing thread ?

NoLoveofMine · 26/05/2017 10:42

At the same time there is of course racism in this country which is completely unacceptable. Whilst there's more in Europe, America etc, any is too much and has to be challenged. After last year's referendum it seems a lot of unpleasant sentiment came to the fore and can't be tolerated.

HeyHoThereYouGo657 · 26/05/2017 10:42

start yet another etc *

allegretto · 26/05/2017 10:42

nd Ido wish that people would not scoff when people in situations like ine say we are worried and the future is uncertain.

Exactly. Brexit is a very real worry for those of us who have a UK/EU family and has thrown all our plans as a family up in the air for the next few years.

Madbengalmum · 26/05/2017 10:43

Australia is fucked too, its ecomony is soon to falter, its been on the cards and banded around for a while, all cyclical. A big part of their econmoy relies on minerals exports which are massively down in demand.

MissionItsPossible · 26/05/2017 10:43

No, I believe there's far more racism in European countries than there is in the UK and that the UK is far better integrated and with such a bigger variation of people from all over the world than exists in any European country (the latter is indisputable).

I've had bananas thrown at me in Spain and France and had monkey chants in Russia and in Poland (and actually got beat up in Russia by a gang of grown skinhead adult men when I was a preteen child on a school trip whilst Police halfheartedly got them off of me) The UK is far more tolerant for racism, even more so than place like Sweden and The Netherlands. Unless you've travelled as or with a non white person, you probably won't realise that though.

PushingThru · 26/05/2017 10:44

Go. For the sake of your daughter, go. This country is in rapid decline.

lessworriedaboutthecat · 26/05/2017 10:45

arty we're all worried and everybody's situation is uncertain whither you voted leave or remain are planning on leaving the UK or staying. you look at the situation we're in this week for example and no one has any real answers or lets be honest any real hope for the future. I think the majority of people in Europe feel the same.

NoLoveofMine · 26/05/2017 10:45

That's horrendous MissionItsPossible. I'm sorry you had those experiences, disgusting.

lessworriedaboutthecat · 26/05/2017 10:45

where would you recommend pushing ?

Madbengalmum · 26/05/2017 10:45

Pushingthru, pray tell where is this utopia we should all decamp to?

Laniakea · 26/05/2017 10:46

well considering that an actual fascist - not a Tory or even a UKIPer but a real life fascist - just had a respectable showing in the French presidential election I'd say it is fairly naive to believe that the UK is some kind of unique and especially hellish place right now.

HeyHoThereYouGo657 · 26/05/2017 10:46

There is far more racism in Europe First Poster

This comment is so ironic. Sweeping generalization about a whole continent!

YOUR comment is ironic as well.

See this trotted out all the time post Brexit . THEY are racists, THEY are this and that . THAT is also generalising !! I also agree with whomever said go to places in Eastern Europe , and Poland but never hear none of you on your high horse about racism by the polish do you !?

MissionItsPossible · 26/05/2017 10:47

Thanks NoLove. Yes, it was disgusting and I would never go to Russia again because of it. The reason I mentioned it was to highlight how different racism is across countries. There would be uproar if a nazi gang beat up a child for not being white in this country. There, nobody batted an eyelid.

lessworriedaboutthecat · 26/05/2017 10:48

Yeah I sometimes wonder how the Poles would feel if 750,000 thousand + British people turned up. I'm thinking as lot of concrete blocks would be getting dropped on heads.

allegretto · 26/05/2017 10:49

YOUR comment is ironic as well.

Why? Oh because:

See this trotted out all the time post Brexit . THEY are racists, THEY are this and that .

But I didn't write that, did I? You did. Your comment really makes no sense.
