WIBU to replace my car after six weeks?

Tattsyrup · 25/05/2017 18:53

I bought a used car in April and since then I've been trying to convince myself that I like it, but the fact is that I don't like it. I don't want it.
I bought it unseen, having been shown a different vehicle (same make and model, but a slightly flashier version). There was definitely a fair bit of bullshitting from the salesman going on too.
If I sell the car I'll lose around £2000, plus I'd have the expense of replacing it with a car I actually like. I took out a small loan to buy the car, and I owe £4500 on that.
WWYD? AIBU to be considering selling it and buying something better?

Thank you, Boys, I appreciate that.

me too, i hope you get it sorted. x

Cakeisbest · 27/05/2017 19:16

I'm following this with interest, so let us all know how it pans out. Well done for getting stuck in to sort it out - it's a horrible feeling when you know somethings just isn't right but you feel powerless to put it right.

VelvetSpoon · 27/05/2017 19:24

OP, completely agree with the advice you've been given about trying to get your money back, you've definitely been mis sold this car.

Can I just ask what was on the V5? Did this not mention anything about it being imported?

eddielizzard · 27/05/2017 19:34

good luck. they shouldn't be allowed to get away with this.

winewolfhowls · 30/05/2017 16:09

Hope you are giving em hell today, good luck

SnickersWasAHorse · 30/05/2017 16:45

I was just wondering earlier if you were calling today.
How did it go?

Tattsyrup · 30/05/2017 18:43

There's not much to report at the moment. I spoke with Motorpoint customer service again and the agent said Vauxhall confirmed it's a U.K. vehicle, based on the plates. However, my concern is with the VIN, so she's going to check that.
She does think the car should have air conditioning, but the windows and mirrors are correct for the model?! I'll be taking the car into Motorpoint either late this week, or some time next week to be fully checked against Vauxhall's specification. I will update as and when!

blamethecat · 30/05/2017 19:29

While I'm sure motorpoint will want to check everything is there any way to go to an independent garage to get it checked first, just so you are prepared for any other outcome the original garage come out with. Do the AA or RAC maybe offer this sort of service ?

LightastheBreeze · 30/05/2017 19:39

If the model is correct maybe Motorpoint or Vauxhall will show you a brochure or some written information somewhere which says which model it is which has the manual windows as you have looked, so have people on this thread and no one has found it yet.

Tattsyrup · 30/05/2017 19:57

That's a good idea, blame. I do know a good independent garage who've looked after my family's cars for 30+ years, so might see if they can cast an eye over it tomorrow.
I'm actually quite pleased with how Motorpoint have handled this, at least so far. I thought they'd try to fob me off, but they're actually taking my complaint seriously. Hopefully they'll be able to help reach a satisfactory conclusion!

Hope it all gets sorted and you either get the correct car or your money back !

sharklovers · 31/05/2017 16:51

Also, might be worth visiting your local Vauxhall dealer and having a friendly chat with the parts dept. Give them the VIN and see what they make of it, they should be able to pull all the details. I find the parts dept usually more helpful than the sevice dept for example.

SnickersWasAHorse · 31/05/2017 17:12

I was going to say about going to a local dealer too. They will know all the models and specs.
The number plates will say it's a U.K. Vehicle because they are registered to a U.K. vehicle I guess.
Didn't you find out that it was originally German?

Tattsyrup · 31/05/2017 17:52

Yeah, according to the VIN it's a German model and an Opel, rather than Vauxhall, if the website I used is correct! It was linked from Autotrader's advice pages, so likely to be legit.

West Germany? How bloody old is it?

Tattsyrup · 31/05/2017 18:47

Hopefully that just refers to the side of the country!

If you ordered, in good faith, a Vauxhall Astra from a UK dealer, then you have every right to expect to receive a Vauxhall with standard UK spec. Unless it says in the small print about the vehicle being an import, then I would think Trading Standards would agree that you have been mis-sold. Really, the car supermarket should let you return the car for a full refund on the basis that they have not supplied what you ordered.

Apologies if I've missed it but did you speak to Trading Standards?

thenightsky · 31/05/2017 21:48

Wow... I had a friend who had a similar thing happen. She test drove a car, fitted the buggy in etc. Decided to buy it. Then they told her it wouldn't be that exact car, but an identical one from another branch. She went back the next day... it was lashing with rain and pitch dark (middle of Dec). Car was in a badly lit car park. Toddler was having a meltdown due to hunger and tiredness (6pm). She signed all the paperwork out in the dark. Got in the car to drive it off as the staff locked up and 'ran away home'. She shouted after them... 'hey, this is an automatic and I never driven one before!' They shouted 'its easy'.. and fucked off and left her.

Sorry... long story but I wonder how common this sort of dealership behaviour is.

(not motorpoint in this case)

Mummysh0rtlegs · 31/05/2017 22:36

SA-SM would be UK, so definitely not right.

ThereIsNoSuchThingAsRoadTax · 01/06/2017 01:11

The initial letters of the VIN indicate the country of assembly, not the target market. Being made in Germany does not mean that it is not a UK model. Absence of air con or electric windows does. Your car is not the latest model (k) based on the photos you posted. Google the astra J brochure for 2014 and 2015.

winewolfhowls · 01/06/2017 19:08

Any developments op?

TweedAddict · 03/06/2017 21:04

Any updates op

Tattsyrup · 03/06/2017 22:31

The car's going in to Motorpoint's workshop on Wednesday. It's a whole load of hassle, but hopefully it'll get things sorted in some way.

OP posts:
SnickersWasAHorse · 03/06/2017 22:38

What is reason for the workshop?
They are hardly going to find the electronic windows have been installed incorrectly.
