WIBU to replace my car after six weeks?

I bought a used car in April and since then I've been trying to convince myself that I like it, but the fact is that I don't like it. I don't want it.
I bought it unseen, having been shown a different vehicle (same make and model, but a slightly flashier version). There was definitely a fair bit of bullshitting from the salesman going on too.
If I sell the car I'll lose around £2000, plus I'd have the expense of replacing it with a car I actually like. I took out a small loan to buy the car, and I owe £4500 on that.
WWYD? AIBU to be considering selling it and buying something better?

Definitely make some noise on facebook/Twitter. The squeakiest wheels get the most oil! Good luck.

Tattsyrup · 27/05/2017 11:38

Ok, I've checked the VIN, and it's definitely not a U.K. model, it's actually German. I've phoned Motorpoint customer care and explained the situation. The customer care woman checked the registration against there records and according to their spec the car does have air con and electric windows! Except, of course, it actually doesn't.
She has said she will take it up with Vauxhall once their HO is open again next week.
I am going to email Trading Standards. Just as soon as I've spoken to my dad!

Excellent. This is really fucking dodgy, good for you for seeing this through.

It's really weird that it's wind up windows. Something is most definitely amiss. It's almost like it's a bootleg Astra....

LightastheBreeze · 27/05/2017 12:04

Hopefully it will be exchanged for one similar to what you wanted in the first place

friskybivalves · 27/05/2017 12:10

I think it's a bit weird that Motorpoint are trying to involve Vauxhall. I mean, it's not Vauxhall who have sold you a dodgy spec car that was nothing like the one you were shown. It's not Vauxhall's fault that a German spec car was sold to a UK buyer.

An attempt by Motorpoint to fob off and buck pass??

neonrainbow · 27/05/2017 12:16

Agreed what's it got to do with vauxhall?

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 27/05/2017 12:20

How can it be a German car if it's right hand drive?

Tattsyrup · 27/05/2017 12:22

I think they want to check the VIN and the spec with Vauxhall, rather than trying to make Vauxhall responsible.
Everywhere is closed now until Tuesday anyway, so I'm going to leave it until then. I will update MN when I have more.

Thanks again for all the helpful comments and thoughts.

I would have expected a German model to be badged as Opel rather than Vauxhall

SnickersWasAHorse · 27/05/2017 12:29

German? But right hand drive?

What a bunch of bastards.

Tattsyrup · 27/05/2017 12:40

According to the VIN, it is Opel, rather than Vauxhall. Something is dodgy!
Regarding the right hand drive query, I honestly don't know. It is right hand drive.

Good that they were helpful.
My dad has bought right hand cars from Germany, random I know, but it does happen.

ElphabaStrop · 27/05/2017 12:59

Well done, TattySyrup. Keep us posted!

winewolfhowls · 27/05/2017 13:15

Good sleuthing op!

pigsDOfly · 27/05/2017 13:19

This sounds like they've really tried to fob you off with this car. Well done for fighting back. Hope you get it sorted out satisfactorily.

Not sure going the cheapest route is always wise. I went to a large dealership for my current car. I realize I probably paid a bit more for it than if I'd have gone down the private or supermarket route but the car is great and they - a dealership in Eastbourne - have been fantastic.

Tattsyrup · 27/05/2017 14:19

Good sleuthing op!
I'd say the sleuthing was actually down to the troll hunters! Grin

You should get in touch with trading standards. This product is not as advertised or as you were told it would be by a sales person.
It also might be worth asking all this on some of the car forums or something like Money Saving Expert. They are more likely to have specialist knowledge.

Good luck

CiderwithBuda · 27/05/2017 16:15

Hope you get to th bottom of it. It does sound dodgy.

Years ago my dad bought a car from a dealer and it start d to go wrong almost as soon as he got it home. He phoned them and they basically said tough shit. So he got it going again and drove it back to them with a mate in tow and managed to park it right across the doorway so they couldn't get out of their office. And obv nobody could get in. He moved it when the gave him his money back! Obviously they could have called the, police but we suspect they knew full well that they had sold him a dud so didn't want police involved.

OutToGetYou · 27/05/2017 16:22

I'm really surprised to hear Vauxhall still make any cars with manual windows. But, obviously it was mis-sold, though whether you can do anything I don't know. It's your money though, if you can afford to lose £2k go for it.
