Surprised that people can't apply critical thinking here to who is fundraising and work out that this is legit. Perhaps the doubters are not based in the UK? The MEN is an institution.

Agerbilatemycardigan · 23/05/2017 16:41

Bumping xx

TheFirstMrsDV · 23/05/2017 16:44

I do not understand why people are puzzled that bereaved families and those maimed in attacks might need money after the event.

When you lose a child there are not benefits to sustain you until you are able to work again.
There is no one to pay your mortgage or your bills while you try and sort out your child's funeral
There is no one to pay for the funeral unless you are on certain benefits and even then the grant doesn't even cover the cost of the burial plot.
If your child is injured who will pay your expenses while you travel back and forth from hospital?

Not many children have life insurance.
If an adult is insured its not likely that the pay out will be swift.

I really didn't need to explain all that did I?

JaneJeffer · 23/05/2017 16:45

Sudo it's perfectly normal to fundraise for all sorts of disasters. I don't know what you're making such a fuss about. Of course the money will get to those who need it. I live in Ireland and even I have heard of the Manchester Evening News.

DeidreInaQuandry · 23/05/2017 16:46

I don't think you can take life insurance out for a child.
I also think that the venue's public liability insurance does not pay out when an incident is classed as a terrorist attack. This certainly used to be the case. So the victims or their families will get a paltry payout from the Criminal Injuries Board.

Hence the Manchester Evening News crowd funding.

cliffdiver · 23/05/2017 16:49

Diedre most adult life insurance policies cover the policy holder's children.

However, in the interim between death and claim paying out (potentially several months) there will be mortgages / rent to pay, other children to feed and look after which the parents may not be able to pay for if they cannot work due to the death of their child.

Sudocreamface · 23/05/2017 16:51

Thanks everyone.

As you can see I was near the first to comment. I clicked on the link and it said raise £30,000 ( it was already over target) then I asked what it was as I'm not familiar with this. When it was explained to read the link I clicked back on it and did...... it then changed to £50,000 as the target!!

I'm not familiar and it sent off an alarm bell, so I read it and it just said it will go to the families, that's it, not how or what for.

I am not familiar with MEN and had no idea what it is, so that coupled with the change in target for money and it not stating how it gets to the family just shouted caution to me.

I was alarmed and weary of other people giving kindly with their hearts and intentions and then it's possibly a scam.

I now know men is a verified news paper company and has done fund raisers before.

I hope I have explained in enough detail to you why the alarm bells rang and my panick in good people being conned as MEN meant nothing to me. I didn't want to take time to find out first incase in that time people donated and lost money from kindness.

I don't even know what a troll is but fyi I'm not ugly.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 23/05/2017 16:55

What the me me me posts Sudo?

Donated. A great idea at a terrible time.

Ginkypig · 23/05/2017 16:56

Sionella sorry if this sounds goady but

Can I suggest you start another thread using the full name of the newspaper and also using both links to the news story and also the fundraising page

If the new thread has all the above information, clearly stated in the first post then people won't jump to question it hopefully.

Then hopefully it will get lots of donations for the people who need it rather than a bun fight.

then ask for this thread to be deleted, as this one seems to have taken and odd turn.

Thanks for highlighting it.

taliaandthetots · 23/05/2017 16:56

Donated, if this happened to dc I would hope mumsnetters would do the same

redshoeblueshoe · 23/05/2017 16:57

At the Manchester Children's hospital there is a MacDonalds house for families, this does make things easier, but it is shocking how much it costs when a child is in hospital for a long period of time. Children are also in Wythenshawe hospital, where this is not available.
The MEN is one organisation that I know I can trust to get the funds to where they are needed.

whoputthecatout · 23/05/2017 16:59

The Manchester Evening News is one of the leading regional daily papers. Founded in 1868. It is Manchester's 'local' paper with a long history of backing charity.

NorthernLurker · 23/05/2017 17:00

Sudo it really isn't all about you. Try thinking first and posting second next time.

Sionella · 23/05/2017 17:07

Ginky - I'm hoping it's now back on track; however I have reported it with the request for clarity. If anyone else questions it or is confused, I will gladly ask again. Thx.

How inappropriate.

SarahGraceMc · 23/05/2017 17:09

I hope just giving waver the 5% free

NotQuiteJustYet · 23/05/2017 17:11

Firstly, thank you Sionella for posting the link somewhere with so much traffic.

Truly shocked at some of the posts made on this thread when it was created purely to highlight crowdfunding for victims and their families. This is not a new concept and I'm sure that MEN (as a well-established institution) will be in talks with the families shortly once the dust has settled to discuss their needs and what they can do to help.

TheDudePhish · 23/05/2017 17:12

I hope just giving waver the 5% free

That's why I haven't donated here. I'll donate to the children's hospital.

Farthingwood143657 · 23/05/2017 17:14

Not everyone has heard of M E N so how can you be disgusted at some of the posts. Hmm

scootinFun · 23/05/2017 17:15

I think this is a lovely gesture by the MEN

Sionella · 23/05/2017 17:18

it's nearly at £500k now, which is amazing.

OP posts:
harderandharder2breathe · 23/05/2017 17:21

I would imagine it goes to pay for funerals, and to allow the parents to take time off work without worrying about paying the bills.

I imagine police and/or press campaigns would encourage families affected to contact MEN to access the support.

redshoeblueshoe · 23/05/2017 17:34

Only on mumsnet could people complain about fundraising for families of deceased children
I am being really restrained by not saying what I actually think.

BeepBeepMOVE · 23/05/2017 17:35

I don't understand how the money will be distributed? Is it evenly to families who lost someone or just to the poorer families? Will more go to families who lost an adult with multiple dependants than to a young child? How much will go to those with injuries? Will they get the same or more than one of the grieving families?

ineedabodytransplant · 23/05/2017 17:39

There is no way that justgiving will waver their fee.

Same question asked a few weeks ago about another multi-thousand (I can't remember the target)page and justgiving said no fee waver.

They are money grabbing scum
