Even basic funerals cost a fortune, ( thousands and thousands) this is a great idea, imagine poor parents wanting the best funeral for their dc but cant afford it. Sad Or for whatever they need money for...just hepful in a time of tragedy and shock

FindoGask · 23/05/2017 16:21

It's on Justgiving. They're a well established fundraising site.

If you don't want to donate, then don't, but stop pouring scorn on people who do.

RoseAndRose · 23/05/2017 16:21

It's better to give if you are sure it is going to an organisation which really will ensure it reaches intended recipients (and anything left over goes to worthy allied projects, such as local community memorials)

Just as there have been suspicions about trolls amongst reports of the missing, there have been (in previous incidents) concerns that any old chancer could set up a fundraising page and hope to tap in to acritical generosity.

Sudocreamface · 23/05/2017 16:23

Sionella It's not personal but you don't even know what the money is being used for and to what families. Maybe you should before you post a link for people to give money.

That's all I was saying.

Sionella · 23/05/2017 16:23

Sure. If I had set this one up, that would be a legitimate concern. But the MEN is one of the best known names in Manchester and they do these campaigns regularly.

innurendo · 23/05/2017 16:24

There will be funeral costs and a large number of amputations and life changing disabilities that will stem from this incident. 71 people have been hit with explosives, many of them children. There will be psychological fall-out, there will be lost time at work.

Personally I might just top myself if DCs were killed, certainly would hit my ability to work.

It's not like we can do much, but we can perhaps offer a crutch.

Wtfdoipick · 23/05/2017 16:25

Sudocreamface MEN is a large well respected newspaper here. They would not scam.

innurendo · 23/05/2017 16:25

Sionella, perhaps it might be an idea to ask HQ to edit in the "official" link from MEN to your OP?

Sudocreamface · 23/05/2017 16:25

If the family member of a lost one set it up I'd donate, but not a paper company who hasent said what or how.

I'm not stopping anyone from donating who wants too, it's their own choice.

Ratatatouille · 23/05/2017 16:26

So, so disappointed to see people trying to rubbish a campaign to raise money for the victims and their families. You ought to be utterly ashamed.

Morris it's very common knowledge that funerals cost a lot of money. An 8 year old is unlikely to have had life insurance for goodness' sake. It also means that the families could potentially take time off work if needed to grieve or to assist victims who may now be dealing with life changing injuries. Perhaps they will need adaptations to their homes. There are a million and one reasons why these poor people might need cash.

If people don't want to give then fine, but it's disgusting to call in to question a genuine attempt to assist people in need.

thanks for bringing this to attention and people that want to donate that's great but i don't give to this stuff on line as i'm cynical of where the money actually goes, having read / heard too many scams, i'm very mistrustful having been caught out once before with something like this.

SleightOfHand · 23/05/2017 16:27

They'd send a cheque I should imagine.

ihop · 23/05/2017 16:27

The Manchester Evening News is a longstanding and totally legit publication. They have fundraised before. The arena that was hit is still known as the MEN arena locally as the paper sponsored it for years. They are an obvious choice as a local organisation to co-ordinate donations.

Ratatatouille · 23/05/2017 16:27

Audi then just don't donate. There's no need for all the comments because that is just you trying to put other people off. No other reason for it.

Sionella · 23/05/2017 16:27

Innurendo - normally I would, but I think you got it in there early enough on page 1 to the first post? Thank you!

reawakeningambition · 23/05/2017 16:27

Sudocream a newspaper is one of the most scrutinised bodies you could possibly have and its local readership will be the ones most affected.

I think it is fair to ask what you have asked. Any trust fund needs trustees who have to follow rules about what criteria apply. However, episodes of this nature are not without precedent so it will not be a big problem to use formats that have worked well in the past.

Ratatatouille · 23/05/2017 16:28

Sudo rather. Autocorrect

pipsqueak25 · 23/05/2017 16:30

sion there is no need to be rude to anyone, sudo was giving their opinion, this is what aibu is about, just because someone doesn't agree with you, just be the better person and don't engage with them.
i doubt sudo gives a monkeys that you've called them a troll any more that i would tbh.

winglesspegasus · 23/05/2017 16:32

sudo
dh was attacked and suffered TBI
wasnt killed and we still had half a mil in hospital bills/therapy
medications
house conversions
all in all about 2 mil in needs
large entities that start something like this and have done before have all sorts of oversight agencies to be sure that the ones who need get the help/a wonderful and generous thing to do
its not a scam ROCK on MEN

Maltie · 23/05/2017 16:33

Deffo not a scam the MEN is an institution and the Arena actually used to be called the MEN arena .... the cause is a good one for the children (who will not have life insurance) who have been slaughtered.

feathermucker · 23/05/2017 16:35

It happened last night, so exactly how it will be used is, understandably, not crystal clear right now!

Presumably, it will be used to help the victims in whatever way they might need.....some of that May include funeral expenses, just to gain a little perspective.

NoLotteryWinYet · 23/05/2017 16:36

I don't think justgiving would have anything to do with anything dodgy either. Donated - and shared on facebook...

redshoeblueshoe · 23/05/2017 16:36

ihop beat me to it. Manchester Arena was the MEN arena.
They also have a very long history of fundraising and charitable works.
sionella thanks for the thread, I've not looked at the MEN site today, as people have said there are some awful pictures on it.

Ratatatouille · 23/05/2017 16:38

i doubt sudo gives a monkeys that you've called them a troll any more that i would tbh.

In which case they probably don't require your input pipsqueak Hmm

Why can't people just get behind a good cause or keep quiet? No need at all to give the false impression that this is a scam when it's so easily verified. Why would anyone want to hurt a cause like this?

So no, sorry, this isn't just "what aibu is about".
