WILL DONALD TRUMP BE IMPEACHED? DESPITE COMEY MEMO AND RUSSIA-ISIS LEAKS, REPUBLICANS AREN'T READY TO ABANDON THE PRESIDENT

While a handful of Republicans have started to speak out more forcefully about Trump’s erratic behavior—abruptly firing Comey last week, followed by allusions to a White House recording device and then this week’s revelations—it’s hardly a groundswell. And that’s what it would take for the GOP to support an independent investigation into the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia—let alone impeachment.

Red, he may not voluntarily resign, but I'm not sure I see him as a rebel leader/dictator/civil war type. At his core, he is a coward who constantly makes mistakes. He has business nous, but it hasn't quite translated to political might. He is an isolationist loner who thinks everyone else is either out to get him or incapable of their jobs. He won't resign, so impeachment or other court ordered sanction has to be they way forward I'd say.

ohfourfoxache · 17/05/2017 03:04

That's pretty depressing Red!

ohfourfoxache · 17/05/2017 03:06

Claws do you really think he has business nous? I thought he'd lost more money than he'd earned?

Or have I got that completely wrong?

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 17/05/2017 03:11

Joy Reid @JoyAnnReid
GOP source to me tonight says donors are nearing revolt. That could be what's finally pushing GOPers away from Trump.

TheClaws · 17/05/2017 03:31

ohfourfox I do - though he certainly had plenty of financial 'help' on the way, he knows how to promote himself and his businesses, And he returned from a 'bankrupt' to a billionaire. That doesn't happen without something upstairs. It may not be what we conventionally would term business intelligence - but it worked extremely well for him.

I have just woken up and am scared to go back to sleep because it feels like the world's about to end Sad

These Scrotus threads are moving too fast for me - averaging 200+ posts a day. Wake me up when it's all over.

I'm sorry, I think I went on a bit of a posting binge last night Blush

The Rachel maddow show and the last word are good at summarising most of what's happened:

I'm not sure I see him as a rebel leader/dictator/civil war type. At his core, he is a coward who constantly makes mistakes. He is an isolationist loner who thinks everyone else is either out to get him or incapable of their jobs.

Many dictator types are like this. He may not have a plan, as such, but his actions could easily lead him a path of undermining democratic checks to the point of becoming a dictator.

He has business nous, but it hasn't quite translated to political might.

Yes, I'm not sure about that either. He seems very much a one trick pony. He develops real estate, which he learnt from his dad. His other ventures have mostly flopped and his casino ventures led to bigly bankruptcies at a time when other casinos were doing very well.
He's borrowed heavily to build his real estate and golf course empire, and he's not disclosed how much he owes.

He's been a survivor so far, though. I hope for his sake that this Presidency won't be his undoing.
He could become a Bernie Madoff just out of sheer stupidity and hardheadedness.

Lweji · 17/05/2017 07:22

His disapproval ratings are climbing fast and the approval is sliding down fast too.

And Bannon? It not just Trump. It's who is pulling his strings.

RedToothBrush · 17/05/2017 07:37

Plus trump is too arrogant to know when to quit. He's more like to put a bullet in his own head than resign.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 17/05/2017 07:38

Gosh, and some of those polls don't even take into account recent events as they were concluded in April!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/05/2017 07:43

Morning all, never a dull moment in Trumpton, but damn these time zones!

Do you reckon they will let him have his phone when he wakes up this morning or will an aide have crept in ninja style to wise it away from his bedside table?

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 17/05/2017 07:53

He never finished the tweet he started yesterday so either he's consumed with more pressing matters or they've managed to pinch it!

lionheart · 17/05/2017 08:07

They will have handcuffed him to the bed post if they have any sense.

WestleyAndButtockUp · 17/05/2017 08:18

Those asking if Pence is worse than Trump:

Well of course he isn't worse.

He's a representative of all that's nasty and anti-progressive in the Republican party. The Republican party who have quietly supported Trump all the way through.

But at least he's an adult, who understands how government is supposed to work. Who understands that it's probably not a good idea to launch nuclear missiles.

hackmum · 17/05/2017 08:38

I imagine Pence is already plotting behind the scenes and just waiting for the right moment to pounce.

What's fascinating about Trump is he doesn't even have the cunning of an 11-year old schoolchild. He doesn't understand the need to keep some close allies on side - instead he is throwing all his loyal advisers under the bus. Why would you make an enemy of someone as experienced and politically savvy as Comey?

Received political wisdom about keeping your friends close and your enemies closer seems to have sailed right over his head. Lyndon Johnson said of Edgar Hoover, "I'd rather have him on the inside pissing out than on the outside pissing in." Trump seems to take the opposite approach - eventually everyone, friends and enemies alike, is going to be pissing into the tent and Trump is going to be absolutely drenched.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 17/05/2017 08:47

He's also heavily implicated in the Flynn coverup and either lied himself about not knowing flynn had lied or was so incompetent that he was unaware about it as the head of the transition team so really is not ideal to takeover, leaving aside his politics.

AGnu · 17/05/2017 08:58

I'm still trying to figure out if his arrogance outweighs his survival instinct. If not, he could consider having a doctor "diagnose" him with a non-descript condition which means he feels he needs to step down from the presidency to concentrate on his health. He gets to bow out as a martyr & forever wax lyrical about all the things he would've done if he'd been able to continue. He could even potentially strike a deal that he won't be pursued for prosecution for anything he's done while in office.

That said, I suspect his arrogance is much stronger. They should pop him in a presidential vehicle under the guise of taking him to his next appt but drive him straight to prison!

TheClaws · 17/05/2017 09:11

Bannon may be easier to threaten if the FBI have their cards lined up right. He's a normal citizen, right? Not an elected official.

GingerIvy · 17/05/2017 09:14

I think he'll cling to the Presidency even to the point of throwing his children under the bus because he thinks (wrongly) that as long as he's President, he can't be charged with anything.
