50p army indeed? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/50_Cent_Party

It's obvious, but remember to check the parties manifestos and make sure you are voting for the policies you agree with, and not just being influenced by the opinions of others and the politics of inevitability.

I admitted it was uncharitable.

But once the seeds of suspicion are sewn by the op..

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 15/05/2017 20:29

haveacupoftea

Thats not what anyone is saying...at all

BelleTheSheepdog · 15/05/2017 20:31

My attitude on line that I try to maintain is that I take posters at face value.

BelleTheSheepdog · 15/05/2017 20:34

If I was in China I would be approaching with a different life experience.

BenjaminLinus · 15/05/2017 20:34

Of course there is - whole rooms full of sockpuppeteers - they work from a secure underground bunker, but their system went down so Max had to go and fix it.

whatwouldrondo · 15/05/2017 20:45

It is always a bit of a giveaway when they only post in working hours. When they finish trolling at 1.30 am and are at it again at 7 am I tend to think there is a different motivation Hmm

If you think they are all going to be obvious think again. This is an interview with a real 50 centre and he is pretty sophisticated about its...www.google.co.uk/amp/www.newstatesman.com/politics/politics/2012/10/china%25E2%2580%2599s-paid-trolls-meet-50-cent-party%3Famp

Orlantina · 15/05/2017 21:04

They could be paid but then get sucked into other areas of MN such as cooking tips Grin

53rdWay · 15/05/2017 21:12

Ha ha, that would be brilliant.
"Where's Agent 2739?"
"Gone AWOL, sir. Last seen arguing about baby-led weaning. We think she went native."

Orlantina · 15/05/2017 21:14

Baby names would be a bit of a clue Grin

CormorantDevouringTime · 15/05/2017 21:22

Or more probably "yes of course I posted 54 times on the World's Hottest Man thread with increasingly explicit photos of James Marsters with no top on. How on earth am I meant to carry credibility as 'just a normal mum who really finds Theresa/Jeremy sincere and convincing' if I only ever post on politics threads? A convincing back story is vital. Must dash! the poster who's in an argument over parking places is due back from her school run."

SwedishEdith · 15/05/2017 21:28

"They could be paid but then get sucked into other areas of MN such as cooking tips"

I think it's the opposite, they start off in cooking tips to give themselves a plausible cover.

But the giveaways were all the "Turkey to join EU NOW", "Our children will be CONSCRIPTED into EU ARMY". And you'd see people get sucked in. It works - look at the Mail, grooming away for years.

I assumed claig was more than one person - or didn't work. A few "personalities" and kept late hours in another time zone?

deeedeee · 15/05/2017 21:34

fascinating article rondo, that's exactly what it seems like, like 20% of people are paid to post in order to influence public opinion.

OP posts:
AccioMerlot · 15/05/2017 21:55

I don't think there's anyone on here that's so slick they're clearly a professional plant.

Claig was prolific but pretty... out there. There's people who have goady/trolly threads but they pretty much set themselves up as idiots from the get-go.

And there are pretty enthuasiastic leavers out there, unlikely to be paid by anyone political as anyone seriously into politics is aware how badly brexit will fuck us up; Aaron Banks funded maybe?

But some crappy mn thread pales into insignificance compared to the misinformation the Mail has been feeding middle england for decades now, so...

elgwyn · 15/05/2017 22:03

Glad you've said this.

I was just looking at the odd politics thread and wondering when MN got taken over by a load of strangely dedicated and aggressive right-wingers.

LadyGlitterSparklesSeriously · 15/05/2017 22:05

Shills are a proven thing. It's an inevitibility that they occupy Mumsnet.

deeedeee · 15/05/2017 22:15

there's a few folk i suspect

OP posts:
elgwyn · 15/05/2017 22:24

I wish someone would pay me to espouse my political views. Given how much I do it for free, I'd be loaded by now.

Sadly, think the money's only there is you're pro-Trump/Brexit, as claig was.

I feel really quite let down at the thought of claig being a troll, after all the time I wasted talking to her/him!

brasty · 15/05/2017 22:28

Yes there are a few I suspect.

Lweji · 15/05/2017 23:11

We never did pin claig down to any level of personal info. Sex, age, country etc

Not quite.
It insisted was female. Hinted at being older. Claimed to live somewhere in or near East Anglia, IIRC, but mentioned some weather when they voted for Brexit that other pps in the same region said wasn't as claig said.

Orlantina · 15/05/2017 23:12

But some crappy mn thread pales into insignificance compared to the misinformation the Mail has been feeding middle england for decades now, so

This. Why bother with MN when the mainstream media carries on as it does.

Bejazzled · 15/05/2017 23:20

There's a few I have strong suspicions over. However, it's not against guidelines so no point in fretting really.

Rosagertrudejekkel · 15/05/2017 23:22

If it's any one it's momentum, wouldn't surprise me if the strange cult likely devotees are spending hours on here. I mean if they throw bricks through windows of corbyn opposition... And start riots in calais, I can see the home bound ones taking on mn Grin

Rosagertrudejekkel · 15/05/2017 23:27

Claig and small fox the two political opposites. Small fox played red rover with mnhq, kept bursting back through those banning defences banging on about his, her bile trying to shove endless stats down our necks.

Dapplegrey2 · 15/05/2017 23:28

What about the brexit threads? Are many of the posters on them paid shills, I wonder?
