Is 8pm too late to mow the lawn?

If I didn't have a child in bed I probably wouldn't care but as I do have a child in bed I feel a bit annoyed that my next door neighbour has decided to mow his lawn at this time.

I'm not going to say anything, unless it becomes a regular thing, but I was just wondering what people's thoughts were?

strikhedonia

Not comparable at all. It doesn't rain indoors and carpets don't grow if you don't hoover them.

strikhedonia · 15/05/2017 13:53

I think if the only time you can manage to take care of your garden is at an unsociable hour in the evening then you should pay someone to come during the day. Even in England it doesn't rain that much that it's your only window.

I never understood why so many people completely disregard their neighbours. It really doesn't require that much effort for everybody to live in peace.

29Palms · 15/05/2017 14:04

You have no idea how near my neighbours are or whether they even overlook my garden, so stop being so self-righteous.

WankersHacksandThieves · 15/05/2017 14:08

It doesn't get dark here until 11pm ish in high summer so you'd all be happy with me out mowing til then?

Or, you could just try being less selfish and antisocial...

Kursk · 15/05/2017 14:27

It is a difficult one, if you live in a town with and therefore have neighbors then It's different to the country.

Hmm

if you live in the middle of nowhere with no neighbours, then your situation has nothing to do with the posts here! duh.

I was debating this yesterday as my only time to cut the grass is when the baby is asleep, so ends up being 7.30 or 8pm in the evening. But it does feel late.

As I don't think it's safe to try and cut grass with crawling baby around.

And funnily enough I don't have spare cash to pay someone to do it

WankersHacksandThieves · 15/05/2017 14:46

Babies also sleep during the day and they can also sit in a buggy or in a pen while you get stuff done. That said before 8 is probably fine though you'll probably still be giving some parents of toddlers a hard time getting them to sleep.

strikhedonia · 15/05/2017 14:48

what's wrong with a playpen or leaving them in a buggy?

If you have a baby who does not nap for a minute between 7am and 8pm, wait until you have a toddler kept awake by your neighbours.

WankersHacksandThieves · 15/05/2017 14:50

strike - I think we should be neighbours! :o

strikhedonia · 15/05/2017 15:04

Wankers hahaha indeed!

user1493630944 · 15/05/2017 15:09

We get lots of machine noises here from early until late (mowers, hedgetrimmers etc) but for me the most annoying is the people who let their dog out into the garden at 7am and 11pm every single day. It barks loudly and repeatedly until it goes in again.

Does everyone have money just to chuck around on simple tasks?

My own children have no problem sleeping through our lawn mower on the (thankfully rare) occasions I have to run the mower after 8pm.

AmysTiara · 15/05/2017 15:28

I'd say it would be fine to finish about half 8. I wouldn't do it later than this.

DoNotBlameMeIVotedRemain · 15/05/2017 16:36

DH asked me if I thought it would be OK to mow the lawn about 8pm on Sun. I said I thought it would be a bit inconsiderate as they have 3 small kids. I do think it's OK up to 9pm if it's light but I would take the kids into account too.

Baby does nap during the day but only for about forty minutes which isn't enough time to get mower out, mow and tidy away.

Funnily enough my older two and the baby aren't disturbed by mine or my neighbours mower.

Mrsmadevans · 15/05/2017 18:51

It isn't too late imho . IME the kids sleep through the lot!

Siwdmae · 15/05/2017 18:54

I think 8pm is fine. It is a bit Confused to moan about this, IMO.

WankingMonkey American cars do this. You lock it as you get out, it honks the horn. I liked it as something different on holiday, it would drive me nuts at home and I wouldn't dream of disturbing my neighbours. It's an option that can be turned off. Why don't you ask him?

Herbella · 15/05/2017 19:04

"But who decides what is unsociable?

It's still broad daylight at 8."

Well, as there are places (France and Germany to my certain knowledge and probably others) where there is a legal cut off point at 6 or 7 p.m. (as well as a starting point at 8 or 9 a.m.) and a complete proscription on Sundays, then that would seem to suggest that those were the "reasonable" times for using noisy machines (whether it be for DIY or gardening purposes: if my neighbour were making concrete after dark I'd make a very close note of the day and time in case his wife suddenly disappeared under the patio.)

CheeseCrackersAndWine · 15/05/2017 20:19

I agree with ExPresidents! Not all kids sleep heavily & through all sorts of noises and it's no reflection on your parenting so ignore the snide comments. My eldest has literally in the past slept through our house alarm going off. Youngest, wakes at the drop of a pin... So YANBU to be annoyed and you definitely don't need to sleep train! You just need to hope your neighbour doesn't do it too often and get on with it when he does.

LakieLady · 15/05/2017 20:43

DP used to do ours at that time of night when he worked in London. He never got home before 7.45, so the only other time was at weekends.

That summer, it seemed to piss down almost every weekend so it was never dry enough to do it then.

JanetBrown2015 · 15/05/2017 20:45

I would say any time up to about 9pm in summer particularly for those who just get back from work at 8pm.

Mowing is like the hoover - it sends children to sleep rather than wakes them up.
