Is 8pm too late to mow the lawn?

If I didn't have a child in bed I probably wouldn't care but as I do have a child in bed I feel a bit annoyed that my next door neighbour has decided to mow his lawn at this time.

I'm not going to say anything, unless it becomes a regular thing, but I was just wondering what people's thoughts were?

I find the sound of mowing relaxing, it's the backdrop of summer.

beanbag19 · 14/05/2017 20:51

He finished at about 8.35, after he'd done the strimming too!

I think 8 is too late. 6 or 7 would be a reasonable cut off.

scottishdiem · 14/05/2017 20:51

To be honest that is probably pushing it in terms of lateness but I would wait to see if that is the time he is going to be doing it at every Sunday. You could mention in passing if he could do it 30 mins earlier or so since you have a little one.

But be prepared for when your child is noisy and disturbing them for a reciprocal request to be made.

whathaveiforgottentoday · 14/05/2017 20:52

yes, bit late. It would be ok if there were no kids asleep nearby but I would be irritated by this at my kid's bedtime when they were young.

OvO · 14/05/2017 20:52

I wouldn't do it that late. I wouldn't do it after 6.

I probably wouldn't notice if my neighbours did though. I don't mind mowing noises really - just every other fucking noise. Grin

It's okay to be annoyed btw. It's only unreasonable to shout 'cunt' out the window! Anything less is fine. Wink

MuncheysMummy · 14/05/2017 20:53

I'd kill them if they woke my sleeping 11 month old DS,who has this very week developed terrible separation anxiety and if he wakes will take literally an hour to get back off to sleep again!

devondream · 14/05/2017 20:53

I live in a country where we can only cut it from 8.00am to 9.00 pm and Not at all on a Sunday!

To be fair most people try to finish by 8.00 pm.

beanbag19 · 14/05/2017 20:53

Seems to be a bit of a mixed bag of opinions. Like I said, I'm not going to say anything but I just wondered if my annoyance was justified.

I thought you were my neighbour as my OH came home from work last night at 8.30pm and gave the lawn a quick mow. But the lawn is so small it took about 10 mins, certainly less than 15. The problem is he is at work 6 days a week until 8.30.
I am also at work but not quite as long so I also have lots of chores.
It was the only time we could do it. Finding the time when it is not raining or dark is an issue. But the lawn is tiny so it isn't long.

NorthernLurker · 14/05/2017 20:55

It's not your neighbours fault if you can't get your kids to bed with some distant noise outside.

WankersHacksandThieves · 14/05/2017 20:56

Personally I think after 8 is antisocial unless it's the summer holidays. I'm a bit funny about noise though.

beanbag19 · 14/05/2017 20:56

Haha OvO! I did very nearly shout that once as his drone hovered over my garden but a finger signal did the job!

mimiholls · 14/05/2017 20:57

Yes I'd be annoyed I think it's really rude assuming you're quite close together.

Oblomov17 · 14/05/2017 20:57

Yes. It's too late.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 14/05/2017 20:57

In my opinion yes, unless you live very remotely.

Cutesbabasmummy · 14/05/2017 20:57

YANBU. Our neighbour did this at DS bedtime and I was ready to lamp him one. But before I had a child I wouldn't have given it a second thought. Do they have kids?

WeAllHaveWings · 14/05/2017 20:58

Yes, 8pm is too late to mow your lawn. Not because of noise, but because the grass doesn't have time to recover before nighttime and it is then prone to damage. Maybe mention that to your neighbour and it might prevent him doing it so late.

Best times are mid morning (grass has dried from morning dew and it's not too hot), or late afternoon so time to recover before nighttime.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 14/05/2017 20:59

I wouldn't dream of doing it after 8pm.

WaitrosePigeon · 14/05/2017 20:59

Too late.

beanbag19 · 14/05/2017 20:59

Have you had a bad day NorthernLurker? Your responses are unnecessarily aggressive!

Hmm difficult one.

We cut our grass at 8pm last night.

Neighbours twins woke me up screaming at 5 and 7 am

Bin lorry wakes me up at 6.30 every Thursday.

Opposite neighbours puppy yaps every hour or so.

My drunken warbling singing probably pisses off my neighbours every few weeks. (I'm shite).

Think it's just one of the perils is being a human being living in the vicinity of other human beings. We're all as annoying as each other.

Queen brilliant and totally agree; call them now!

OP I think you have your answer???
Not sure what you were hoping for by posting this............
"If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else's,......................we'd grab ours back".

beanbag19 · 14/05/2017 21:09

Bit of an overreaction Daddy. I wouldn't class it as a problem, I was just irritated and wondered what others thought about it. Just because other people have bigger problems doesn't mean I can't be annoyed/irritated by something smaller!
