Is 8pm too late to mow the lawn?

If I didn't have a child in bed I probably wouldn't care but as I do have a child in bed I feel a bit annoyed that my next door neighbour has decided to mow his lawn at this time.

I'm not going to say anything, unless it becomes a regular thing, but I was just wondering what people's thoughts were?

If your child is a light sleeper despite your every effort, any noise when they are asleep will make you tense and irritated.
I nearly died of rage when someone had the bastard selfish audacity to beep their car horn right outside my child's window, if I'd had the powers I would have put a hex on that twat!

Fluffyyellowone · 14/05/2017 21:52

Yes

RedBugMug · 14/05/2017 21:55

it's fine at 8 imo.
doesn't take long (small garden, so 10min max).
maybe invest in better glazing?

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 14/05/2017 21:56

As inconvenient as it is others can't run their lives on your DC sleep patterns though.

BubbleBed · 14/05/2017 22:02

Do people's kids really not sleep through someone mowing the lawn outside?

Do you not Hoover or anything when your kids go to sleep? I used to chuck mine in bed and the Hoover one, rattle around with the dishes, cut the grass, do all the jobs I couldn't do with toddlers round my ankles.

I'm really surprised at children not being able to sleep through it at 8pm. Loud party music and talking is different, but lawn mowing is basically white noise isn't it?

OP YABU, 8pm isn't late. Not when it's light.

BattleaxeGalactica · 14/05/2017 22:04

Happens quite often round here. Some of them are even at it at 9pm. Better not move this way, OP Wink

CrispyBathTowel · 14/05/2017 22:04

I think starting it at 8pm is too late, yes. Starting at 7pm and finishing by 8pm would be my cut-off.

floatingfrog · 14/05/2017 22:04

I probably wouldn't mow a lawn after about 7pm.

floatingfrog · 14/05/2017 22:06

But our is a petrol mower. If it's a flymo probably ok until 8pm ish

AwaywiththePixies27 · 14/05/2017 22:07

YNBU OP.

I think it is too late too. Especially on a school night.

AwaywiththePixies27 · 14/05/2017 22:08

Could you get off to sleep with someone mowing their lawn outside?

RunningHurts · 14/05/2017 22:09

I think it is fine. Often do ours then as much easier to do once our own children are in bed. Lawn mowers are hardly the most offensive of sounds!

Janeinthemiddle · 14/05/2017 22:10

How intolerable are you?

EduCated · 14/05/2017 22:10

I wondered this the other night, as I mowed our lawn about 7.30. It was the first dry night we'd had in a while and knew I wasn't going to get chance for another week or so, and it very much needed doing.

Glad to know I wasn't being unreasonable.

BubbleBed · 14/05/2017 22:11

Yup. I could. Away Can you not?

I could easily go to bed and fall asleep with someone hoovering or mowing the lawn, or drying their hair. Maybe it comes from years of thin walls. But that kind of noise hasn't ever bothered me, or my children.

patheticpanic · 14/05/2017 22:11

It's fine, it's hardly late.

AwaywiththePixies27 · 14/05/2017 22:11

Lots of people don't want to hear children screaming in the middle of the night, or bins at 6.30 am or in our case a part going on until 3am when DH had to be up at 6am for work.

6:30am Piglet. You're lucky. Our street is first on bin day route so we get woken up routinely at 5am on bin day Grin

Botanicbaby · 14/05/2017 22:14

I can understand your irritation OP and wouldn't mow a lawn that late if I had neighbours close by.

I think it's inconsiderate and a bit disorganised of your neighbour too Wink

OhMrBadger · 14/05/2017 22:19

My neighbour cuts his grass in the dark. It's very strange, not least because the grass is damp by then so us most likely buggering up his mower.

8pm mowing is a bit annoying but that droning noise is grating whatever time it's done. I think it was me I'd be all tutty but it's part of living in a close community.

user1492324666 · 14/05/2017 22:49

Yes it is too late. Kids trying to sleep, neighbours wanting to relax and enjoy being outside or in a conservatory. Lawn mowing should be during the day

QuitMoaning · 15/05/2017 08:55

BotanicBaby How is it disorganised? We work from 6.30 to 7.30/8pm six days a week. We don't have a lot of opportunity, so nothing to do with disorganised. We take opportunities where we can (only tiny lawn and only takes 10 minutes).

londonrach · 15/05/2017 08:59

Im odd i think the sound is relaxing...reminds you of warm summers gone by. Now the barking dog at the local pub near by that barks at 11pm every night for ages just as dd reaches end of a sleep cycle...grrrr. Mind you noticing she sleeping through it now so maybe noise is good..

Dianneabbottsmathsteacher · 15/05/2017 09:02

I think any garden activity is fine until 9pm. After that it's a bit inconsiderate. To be fair you easily forget kids sleep patterns etc as soon as yours gets older.

RB68 · 15/05/2017 09:05

Even without children would be annoyed after 7pm. It'll be the hedgetrimmers and power washing next

RB68 · 15/05/2017 09:06

tell him to only do the weeding after 7pm
