Is 8pm too late to mow the lawn?

If I didn't have a child in bed I probably wouldn't care but as I do have a child in bed I feel a bit annoyed that my next door neighbour has decided to mow his lawn at this time.

I'm not going to say anything, unless it becomes a regular thing, but I was just wondering what people's thoughts were?

YABU

wfrances · 15/05/2017 09:24

i also think its fine up to 9pm
i grew up falling asleep to the sound of mowers in the summer ( when my bedtime was 7pm )

TheNaze73 · 15/05/2017 09:27

YABU. 9pm I think would be my cut off.

The people with strimmers at 8am, boil my piss

shinyredbus · 15/05/2017 09:30

I think now the days are lighter its ok. Having said that - I have two young children so I understand the worry that the loud noise mightb wake them up. Pretty sure we've mowed at 8pm in the summer months. It also doesn't depen how big a garden he has - will it take 5 minutes? Or does he have a whole oasis that will take hours?

BorpBorpBorp · 15/05/2017 09:39

YANBU, 8am-7pm is mowing hours.

Fluffyears · 15/05/2017 10:05

8pm I'm fine with but 8 or 9am on a Sunday and I want to strangle the fuckers with the power cord!😡

NervousNellie29 · 15/05/2017 10:17

You don't know what his schedule is like. That may be the only time he is able to do it.

I don't think I would be annoyed by this, but my kids also sleep through almost anything so it wouldn't really have an effect.

If sound is coming through the windows can you try noise reducing curtains if it's an issue for your child?

Designerenvy · 15/05/2017 10:19

No, 8pm is OK. I wouldn't take issue with it. Maybe 10pm was pee me off alright !

runloganrun101 · 15/05/2017 10:54

If your DC can't sleep over the noise of next door's mower even with the windows shut then you have the problem, not the neighbour. You need to sleep train.

MariposaNieve · 15/05/2017 10:59

Nobody mows their lawn that late where I grew up. I would think it too late. 6pm is the latest I would find it acceptable personally.

strikhedonia · 15/05/2017 11:10

I don't even think having children or not is relevant, after 7pm is too late. Up to 9pm is ridiculous, why can't people be a bit more respectful of their neighbours?

I even avoid making noise between 1:30 and 3pm in case my neighbours want to nap.

I happen to have young ones here, so I could be gardening from 6am, but that would be inconsiderate, wouldn't it? we all have done it after noisy late night parties until the guilty house got the hint and stopped Grin

I am so grateful I don't live near some of the posters on this forum, they sound horrible and so selfish.

ExPresidents · 15/05/2017 11:30

I think it's too late, I think 7pm is a reasonable cut off.

The posters sneering at your inability to immediately magic your child to sleep are a) arseholes and b) have obviously never had a light sleeper.

All children are different and just because yours slept through hoovering or mowing or a thunderstorm does not make you a better person or parent.

weddingopinionsplease · 15/05/2017 11:39

I think 7pm is reasonable for a cut off. I'd personally never ever do it after that. And I have a toddler and a pre-schooler who could sleep through anything so it's not about that at all night my case. I think making loud noise which is unnecessary during times when people like to relax or sleep (so for me before 7am after 7pm) is just rude and selfish.

Things like the bins early isn't comparable as that is necessary. Mowing the lawn at 8pm is just rude.

weddingopinionsplease · 15/05/2017 11:40

not about that all in my case* FFS I can't type

weddingopinionsplease · 15/05/2017 11:41

I give up trying to correct lol

Emlou07 · 15/05/2017 11:51

Too late imo. My young children are in bed by this time and I would be peeved if it woke them up.

Sparrowlegs248 · 15/05/2017 11:54

When ds was under 1 any noise like this would wake him, so it would certainly have annoyed me. I don't know if it's unreasonable though.

beanbag19 · 15/05/2017 11:56

runloganrun Really? Sleep training is the answer for a child that heard a strange noise when trying to go to sleep and was inquisitive about it?

OP posts:
Kursk · 15/05/2017 11:58

My rule of thumb is as long as it's light outside it's fine

RedBugMug · 15/05/2017 12:50

if it happens twice a week, how is it a 'strange noise'?

beanbag19 · 15/05/2017 13:06

I said he does it twice a week in the summer. Unfortunately we're not quite in summer yet!

LadyPW · 15/05/2017 13:08

Do you have a trampoline? If so then midnight is an acceptable cut-off point for his mower Grin

29Palms · 15/05/2017 13:14

Mowing the lawn is my nightmare job. Not because I hate doing it, but because you're at the mercy of the weather. You can't do it when the grass is wet, and that can rule out mornings too because of dew.

So it can't be planned like most other household chores. You have to seize the opportunity when it's there. Because the longer you leave it, and the wetter the weather, the faster it grows and the harder it is to cut when you finally get at it.

So yeah, I'll mow until it gets dark if that's the only chance I've had to do it.

bonbonours · 15/05/2017 13:21

Reow's got it right. Other people, including ourselves, are just irritating sometimes 😊

strikhedonia · 15/05/2017 13:42

so 29Palms if you lived in a flat, would you be happy about your neighbours hoovering at midnight because "that's the only chance they have"?
