Just saw an interview with this woman and how irritating is she? I thought Diane Abbot was bad but she is dreadful!

SadEyedPete What on earth have Prince Harry and Debbie Harry got to do with it? Confused

whatcanIdo1 · 14/05/2017 19:13

So glad there is a thread on this op - I thought the same thing. I am sorry to say all I saw was a patronizing condescending lady and she was awful on QT as well.

Re holding Fallon to account the problem is JC whom he held her to account on and she laughed at the link between JC and IRA. There was also no mention of the cosy up between Blair and Gaddafi.

The big issue is - people are put of Labour because of smarmy I know better than you MP's. I wish she had answered the Corbyn issues rather than laughing them away. Labour seem to position themselves as the nice ones who want to help people and have no skeletons in the closet.

LovelyBath77 · 14/05/2017 19:15

Yes, I think if she had explained that and been less kind of eye-roll-ey, and rude, she might be taken more seriously. It made me sigh, sadly.

Oh dear had no idea about white van man debacle.

So yet another sneery^ nasty bloody Labour MP sneering at the very people they purport to support.

Oh dear.

brasty · 14/05/2017 19:18

I think this is a post written by the Conservative Party or similar.

whatcanIdo1 · 14/05/2017 19:19

Agree Lovely. Sheer fucking arrogance. Re the Polls comment as well - instead of admitting " Labour have a long way to go we admit we have lost our core voters by constantly sneering at them - as per my White Van Comment, or Browns Bigot comment etc, our abandoning them over their "EU Leave desires., "
However we are doing much humble introverted soul searching right now. We are trying to understand and reconnect with voters we have lost, we are humbled by poor polls, we are embarrassed by our lack of opposition to the Tory party....Yadadadada

whatcanIdo1 · 14/05/2017 19:20

Sorry instead of admitting that again she batted it away as a silly man ( tom watson ) who was blinded by poor polling figures.

YoullNeverWeeAlone · 14/05/2017 19:23

If smarmy, I know better than you MPs are putting voters off the Labour party, god help the conservatives with their condescending refusal to answer questions, meaningless sound bites and claims that anyone not with them is unpatriotic.

Not a particular fan of either party / any politicians, but it is definitely not a labour only problem.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 14/05/2017 19:24

Do you have a tin foil hat?

Different people have different views funnily enough Wink

LovelyBath77 · 14/05/2017 19:28

Hmm, no sadly, lifetime Labour voter. Until perhaps now. Sadly.

It's interesting that when some people don't like what they hear, they turn against the OP isn't it, rather than reply.

I have always admired Emily Thornberry's ability to explain her party's position on key issues. She is a very good speaker. However, she does give off a very condescending and sometimes sneering air which does her no favours at all. I thought her mouthed faux pas this morning very unprofessional. You just don't do that on a political discussion programme at that time on a Sunday morning.

whatcanIdo1 · 14/05/2017 19:34

Well, like it or not but this is putting people off LABOUR in a big way.

TreeTop7 · 14/05/2017 19:37

She's articulate and clever but rather pompous and condescending. She's better than Abbott I suppose - but that bar is admittedly low.

whatcanIdo1 · 14/05/2017 19:37

The last people we need talking are the DA, ET,. CU etc, we need Labour MPs who seem human and actually sympathetic to peoples issues. Its been said and commented on everywhere and yet still they wheel these people out.

Look, Leave vote won the Ref, so where are the Labour Leave MP's? Why are they not wheeling out people like Gisella, or Frank Field or Hoey? People who seemed to have their pulse on what most people in the UK actually want! Whether you agree with Leave or not, its what many Labour voters - voted for.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 14/05/2017 19:42

Gisela isn't standing this time.

LovelyBath77 · 14/05/2017 19:51

Don't they think how they must come across to most voters? Or maybe don't they care? I don't know. Sometimes I think they don't really want elected at all.

OP posts:
thecownextdoor · 14/05/2017 19:54

As for white van man gate or whatever, can someone tell me what is so great and uniquely English working class about a white man who drives a white van, likely reads the Sun and drapes the house in St George flags? Is that seriously representative of the great British working class? I hardly think so.
The problem was she bit the hand the feeds them. The white van man and the working class in majority vote labour. She practically alienated a whole group of voters. That was the major issue and the problem which lost them a lot of votes.

It's like the conservatives going against old people and the wealthy.

LovelyBath77 · 14/05/2017 19:56

I think the problem is her assumption about people without even knowing them. And also the inability to think before speaking.

OP posts:
ChardonnaysPrettySister · 14/05/2017 19:57

It's her condescending and patronising manner that's annoying. That's what lead to White Van Gate.

Same as DA.

PerkingFaintly · 14/05/2017 20:03

Oh for heaven's sake, this thread is as full of made-up stuff as the original brouhaha about Thornberry.

2012
Thornberry: pic of house with Union Jacks and red & white paintwork, "Wow great house in Lidney Rd #turnout marvin4bristol"

Media: [twiddles thumbs]

2014
Thornberry: pic of house with Union Jacks, "Image from Rochester"

Media: OMG YOU ARE SNEERING AT THE HOUSE OWNER AND ARE CONTEMPTUOUS OF THE WORKING CLASSES YOU SNOB

She did not make any comment at all about class or race of the person living in the second house (which she may not even have known).

The sneering was brought to the party by the media - and swiftly seized on by Tories - which decided that:
a) she must be knocking the flag
b) the house must belong to a white working class bloke, and
b) Thornberry's motive must have been to mock him.

I haven't heard Thornberry today and for all I know she may have made a tit of herself. But the white van kerfuffle was a media creation - which is presumably why people are linking to the media campaign against her.

I'm no fan, but I think anyone who claims to feel sick as a result of watching a fairly standard political television interview had better look closer to home before calling others unstable, tbh.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 14/05/2017 20:06

I unfortunately did watch the Marr piece today but someone has started a thread about insert Labour member/policy here and how awful they/it is, she must have done really well, I see piglet is here so just a short wait till Anon213, radishal, cathf, Janet Brow, optionalrational and puzzledandpissedoff all show up to agree with you OP, they will all as you have OP confirmed that you are life long Labour voters and that you just cant vote for the Labour party with ^insert party member name/policy, spurious connection/ or already contextualised or debunked information

Could you please tell me how I get the job? Is the 50cent army called the 50p army at CCHQ? Or are you an out sorced company?

JustAnotherPoster00 · 14/05/2017 20:09

So many typos if any of that was unclear ill happily retype Grin

PerkingFaintly · 14/05/2017 20:11

She wasn't actually "making a fair point in that tweet about English nationalism"... because she wasn't making any point, as far as I can tell, except, "here's another house with flags, like the last one."

BTW I don't disagree that there are major issues to be discussed around the co-option of the St George's flag by racist white nationalists.

I just don't think Thornberry was discussing it there. And frankly the people trying to push the story that she was sneering at the working classes were probably NOT brought up in a council house - whereas Thornberry was.
