'Pork Barrel politics' is starting to appear. The Hill has to print it, I suppose.

Spicey? You can be in a position where you're running so fast that you just forget to take stock. Maybe that's where he is.......

It reads like a pro-Conway fluff piece.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 14/05/2017 16:10

I'm watching all this with my mouth open and dribble running down my chin. I check out US political news first thing every day at the moment. When I woke up to the news Comey had been fired I felt really quite sick and alarmed. I'm not an American so not well informed about their political system, which has often seemed very weird. The fact that people can essentially legally bribe politicians baffles me. But now I find myself hoping their system's famed checks and balances is going to kick in.

The situation is beyond serious. The WH is blatantly corrupt, and what's at stake isn't some internal squabble. It's whether the administration has sold out the USA to Russia.

I know you are all much more knowledgeable about this. Do you think Trump has a chance of getting away with all this? His fellow Republicans are staying alarmingly quiet.

Lweji · 14/05/2017 16:29

If anything Trump has highlighted how fragile democracy is in the US and how deep the swamp is.

The problem is that the deep changes that are needed amount to a revolution.

lionheart · 14/05/2017 16:34

I think the questions raised in the piece are interesting because the general cry up until now has been for a 'Special Prosecutor.' It would be beyond awful if this were, in the end, to get in the way of full disclosure and the justice it could bring.

Perhaps there will be multi-agency investigations and they will work together, where possible, to get this done. Hope so.

Prawn The sad truth is that yes, he does have a good chance of getting away with all this, thanks largely in part to the complicit GOP members of Congress. In the Nixon situation, the GOP rallied and wanted to do the right thing and follow the law. The current GOP is not so "white hat" and are more "in it for themselves" unfortunately.

GingerIvy · 14/05/2017 16:48

I dread to think what will happen if he names someone as director of FBI that is a Trump stooge, which is quite likely. Regardless of the need for Congressional approval, I am concerned that things are going to go downhill very very quickly.

cozietoesie · 14/05/2017 16:48

I don't think I'm 'much more knowledgeable', Prawn. Just been around a while. Keep up with things and you'll quickly come up to speed.

(And there is a strong argument to be made that as someone relatively 'new' to all this, you haven't been 'normalised' yet and can still ask the pure and hard questions. Remember who it was that pointed out that the Emperor wasn't wearing anything? (A child in the crowd and not one of the courtiers.))

I think he'll 'get away with it' in the short to medium term. Not in the longer term. He's already making bad mistakes.

The big problem is the damage that may be done in the interim.

cozietoesie · 14/05/2017 16:50

And I agree with Lweji.

Lweji · 14/05/2017 16:52

I have to admit that I'm quite concerned that he won't be able to quietly go even at the end of whatever terms. And that GOP will want too much to be in power.

cozietoesie · 14/05/2017 16:54

He's an old man, Lweji. And his excesses are already showing. Sort of like Dorian Gray - except he's the picture.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 14/05/2017 16:56

Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions. I'll keep up with the news - and the thread. I can't look away, tbh.

The lawyers' letter Trump is claiming exonerates him is so carefully worded it means nothing. For one thing I don't think people are saying he's got investments in Russia, rather that Russia has investments in him.

GingerIvy · 14/05/2017 16:58

Prawn Apparently the lawyers also have Russian ties, so it's not much of a exoneration.

cozietoesie · 14/05/2017 17:00

A lawyer's letter isn't an 'exoneration' - even if the firm was 'clean'. Smile

Follow the money. Wink

AcrossthePond55 · 14/05/2017 17:01

Although I still have doubts about the indictment post, it's interesting that Gingrich told Scrotus to shut down the pressroom. Perhaps to stop him from further sticking his foot in his mouth? To stop Spicy from revealing more info that could be used as evidence?

Gingrich is still pretty 'connected' and it wouldn't surprise me one iota that IF the indictment is true, he has knowledge of it.

cozietoesie · 14/05/2017 17:03

45 wants to have someone else to blame - for everything that goes wrong. Gingrich is a likely 'mouthpiece' on this one.

AcrossthePond55 · 14/05/2017 17:06

Does anyone know if a Special Prosecutor and a Commission could co-exist?

I think so from the link below. Special Prosecutor is appointed and acts independently of the Pres and Congress. A Commission would most likely be appointed by Congress and report to them.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 14/05/2017 17:08

I watch a lot of MSNBC & CNN on Youtube. One thing that strikes me very forcefully is the level of contempt and real hatred between Republican and Democrat posters in BTL comments. There's no common ground. It's scary. I've detested certain politicians before, but I've never loathed other voters solely because they support a different party.

Then there's the "fake news" business. Ukraine is under cyber siege from Russia, with real fake news being pumped out. They have sought to immunize their population by making citizens aware that they should always check the source of news. But this just isn't possible in the US with so many people flatly refusing to believe even respected national and international news sources. This left them wide open to Russian generated FB stories.

cozietoesie · 14/05/2017 17:12

Thanks, Across. A useful piece. Smile

GingerIvy · 14/05/2017 17:17

cozie no that's true, it's not an exoneration at all. I meant even though it's daft, it really only opened him up for more questions. lol

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 14/05/2017 17:19

Amazing graphic, Painintheear. Memorable. I've saved it. Thanks.
