If you were buying a supermarket meal deal and you picked up and extra drink which of the 2 drinks would go into the deal, the more expensive or cheaper one?
Just had the cashier make me feel stupid

In my experience you always get the better deal. Never seen it the other way around.

I've been a cashier, and to be kind, I'd put the most expensive one in the deal, but you're not meant to. The cheaper one is supposed to go in the deal.

Normally, in my experience, offers are programmed into the tills to make the cheapest item free. So if you buy a meal deal and an extra drink the cheapest would go in the meal deal.

Same as a multi-buy offer when the cheapest item is free.

Cheapest free. Nothing to stop you buying the other drink as a separate transaction though which is what I had done, particularly if I had been made to feel stupid!

I wasn't even going to explain why but when I said can I pay for this separately she gave me a look and said um ok as if awaiting an explanation. Shouldn't have bothered explaining myself, she clearly didn't listen anyway and was still dismissive.

If the more expensive one is part of the meal deal then that's the one that should be used.
I'd walk out if it wasn't!

The only place I can think of that automatically gives the most expensive one free is Boots (at least I think they do!)

OP, then you can enjoy your weekend knowing you didn't hand over any extra money than was necessary. And the cashier can do one.

deffo the cheaper one yes. On the 3 for 2 makeup at Boots and Superdrug I will always buy three things of a similar value even if it means two mascaras etc and save one for later.

I confused this on first reading as a buy-one-get-one-free scenario but it's not. You should have got the most expensive drink free assuming they were both eligible.

Boots automatically does it for the best deal for the customer (like on the 3 4 2 at Christmas, it automatically groups the items in order of price). Most places the system gives you the cheapest free.

I don't really understand what happened from your OP or reply? Did the cashier include the cheaper or the more expensive?

I work in a shop.....the till is automatically programmed so it's the cheapest item that goes through. You need to do separate transactions if you want it to work to your benefit. Staff can't override it either.

I would have asked the cashier if they could put the more expensive drink in as the meal deal, if they said no, I would have offered to pay in two transactions, if they said no I would have politely said I'll just leave it then and left them with the goods/coffee at the till.
