If you were buying a supermarket meal deal and you picked up and extra drink which of the 2 drinks would go into the deal, the more expensive or cheaper one?
Just had the cashier make me feel stupid

OP posts:

Depends where you were shopping. Our Co-op does a meal deal and sells coffee but the coffee isn't part of the meal deal iykwim

daisypond · 12/05/2017 16:38

Boot doesn't do the most expensive one either, as far as I know.

From their website these are the sorts of offers they have:

3 for 2 on selected skincare - cheapest free
3 for 2 on selected No. 7 - cheapest free
etc

PersianCatLady · 12/05/2017 16:40

The only place I can think of that automatically gives the most expensive one free is Boots (at least I think they do!)
No they don't.

Boots often have 3 for 2 on make-up.

If you buy two items @ £8 and one @ £4 then you pay £16 and get the £4 item "free".

Otherwise you would get people who would buy two items @ £2 and one @ £8 and then only pay £4 in total and get the £8 item "free".

robinia · 12/05/2017 16:45

That's not quite the same though.
On a 3 for 2 yes it's the cheapest product that is free. If you buy 6 items at Boots it's the 3rd and 6th items, price-wise, that are free.
If you have a meal deal of 2 items you should be able to put any 2 eligible items towards that deal.

CottonSock · 12/05/2017 16:48

Boots do it.. I've had very helpful staff there explain.

I was just about to post that but now I don't have to because you have already done it, thanks.

TheRealPooTroll · 12/05/2017 16:49

I would have expected the cashier to put it through as 2 transactions for you if the till would automatically add the cheaper drink to the deal. If she was new or something maybe she didn't realise/understand. Was there a big price difference? It's not something I could get massively worked up over tbh. Just ask to pay for the cheaper drink separately if you're in the same situation again.

WeeWillyWinkieFromEccles · 12/05/2017 16:50

In a 3 for 2 or BOGOF in Boots it is the cheapest free. But if you buy six 3f2 items then the till groups them all into price order and you get the 3rd and 6th free.

For meal deals you get the more expensive one as part of the deal. I often get two snacks in Boots and it is the dearer one that makes up the meal deal.

WeeWillyWinkieFromEccles · 12/05/2017 16:51

Also I work for Boots, so I know this to be true!

NeedMoreSleepOrSugar · 12/05/2017 16:52

Haha, sorry, persian you're quite correct, What I meant was automatically giving the best deal, not the most expensive...very clumsy wording

I think Boots put their items in rank order to give the best possible deal, the same deal as you'd have to split into separate transactions elsewhere to get.

So if you bought four items that were in a buy two get one free offer, you'd get the higher value of the two lowest price items included. (Eg two £8 items, a £6 and £3 one all in the offer, you'd get the £6 one free instead of the £3 one)

AmserGwin · 12/05/2017 16:53

Always the cheapest one, and if she puts them through all together the till would do it automatically

Helenluvsrob · 12/05/2017 17:00

Buy the deal and drink in 2 transactions. If you can't say " I want to make this as cheap as it can be please" then " its for my mate " is a good excuse.

Spam88 · 12/05/2017 17:11

I'd expect the most expensive drink to be included in the deal.

I'm not sure what 3 for 2 or BOGOF deals have got to do with the OP's question..?

PersianCatLady · 12/05/2017 17:13

Thanks.

PersianCatLady · 12/05/2017 17:17

That's because you haven't RTFT.

228agreenend · 12/05/2017 17:25

In the shop,if used to work in, it was the first one the got scanned. So if the cheaper drink got scanned first, that would be free, and you'd pay full price for the expensive one, bit if the expensive one got scanned first,,then you pay for the cheaper item. Hope, that makes sense.

Cary2012 · 12/05/2017 17:32

Sorry to hijack, but can any of you wise posters help me here? I noticed that cashiers are posting so thought I'd quickly ask. Our local shop sells stuff that some times has printed prices on the packaging. So, the are selling a shake drink with £1.50 printed on the actual plastic packaging. Also wine which has £4.99 round the screw top, again on the packaging.
Yesterday I bought both, and when they went to scan them, they both cost more. The checkout lady said they were the new prices. Is this legal?
Thanks

KnittedBlanketHoles · 12/05/2017 17:36

It's legal. Prices are just an invitation to buy at that price until you have over money.

Spam88 · 12/05/2017 17:37

Cary My understanding from working in retail is that they have to sell it to you at the lowest price advertised, but they can refuse the sale.

Cary2012 · 12/05/2017 17:40

Ok, thank you, I was a bit surprised because when I've bought stuff like this before it has always matched the price on the packaging. Thanks again.

PersianCatLady · 12/05/2017 18:13

The checkout lady said they were the new prices. Is this legal?
Yes it is legal because you don't have to buy it.

That said a lot of shops will honour any marked price even if it is incorrect just for goodwill.

If something is incorrectly marked up there is no law that says that a shop has to sell it at that price, contrary to what some people tell you.

PersianCatLady · 12/05/2017 18:17

My understanding from working in retail is that they have to sell it to you at the lowest price advertised, but they can refuse the sale
That doesn't make sense.

They tell you what the price is and you decide whether to buy it or not.

NoFucksImAQueen · 12/05/2017 19:11

I don't really understand what happened from your OP or reply? Did the cashier include the cheaper or the more expensive?
*

Neither. I asked to pay for the cheaper on separately as I assumed if I put them all through together the cheaper on would go on the meal deal. She gave me a look and an ok that indicated she wanted to know why so I said I don't want it to affect the meal deal.
She scoffed, said "Iv heard it all now! It won't affect the meal deal it will it will still be the same price"
So I replied that one drink was 85p and the other was £2.50 so I wanted to pay for the cheaper one separately.
She rolled her eyes and said alright then.

To answer the other poster who asked, yes one drink was 3 times more than the other, I wouldn't have bothered if they were more or less the same price

OP posts:
Spam88 · 12/05/2017 19:22

Persian sorry what I meant was it can't be sold at a higher price than that advertised, so they either honour the lower price or can refuse the sale. Perhaps that was just the policy where I worked though.

WeeWillyWinkieFromEccles · 12/05/2017 19:25

That cashier sounds like she needs some customer service training...
