Policies are going down very well, bit dubious about Theresa Mays charisma though. Where is she hiding that?

DandyLionHead · 11/05/2017 23:13

Anon, I'm not trying to provoke a reaction from you, I'm just pointing out some facts that might give you another perspective. I didn't actually say Finland was better than the uk, and I certainly don't want to move (not that I could because my XH would stop me from taking my DC out of the country because of The Hague convention) I said it was happier, and that is something I'd like for the uk too. I mean, who doesn't want to be happier? It's a no brainer really Grin

The U.K. is a conservative country - yes, that was my point, that we are a conservative nation but yet also the most unequal, with a weaker economy, lowest wage growth, poor record on human rights, etc etc of any European nation and people are dying on our streets for having the misfortune of illness or redundancy etc. It just isn't working. A country is its people first and foremost. When they become expendable, you've got to ask what's going wrong. I just hope people are willing to take the same gamble for the hope of a better future as they did with voting yes for Brexit, and try a new system instead.

Jupitar · 11/05/2017 23:22

I'm quite happy we've got nuclear weapons - I would base my vote on this issue alone. Mutually Assured Destruction has kept us safe for the last half a century and I hope it carries on doing so

9 countries have nuclear weapons, the other 170 odd don't, so what has kept all those countries safe from destruction for the past 50 years?

Anon213 · 11/05/2017 23:38

DandyLionHead, The idea that people in Finland are happier than people than people in the UK is a very subjective conclusion. Happiness means different things to different people, I know it sounds weird but I know loads of people who actually like complaining. The idea of sitting in a room being 'cozy' is also an anathema to many people I know. My own parents hated working (at least that's what they always displayed) but come retirement they were miserable because they hated being at home with nothing to do, so they went back to work.

Does equality bring happiness? What does that do to aspiration, desire, drive to achieve better? If Finland is so happy, why aren't they the wealthiest country in the world? I know poor happy people and rich sad people. So?

Does equality equal happiness? Does that mean no one in a third word country is happy?

Does our inability to deport terrorists because we have 'human rights' make us happier?

I have been alive over 50 years and I have never walked down the streets and never seen people dying. Have you? That's a fallacious argument.

I just hope people are willing to take the gamble for the hope of a better future as they did with voting yes for Brexit, and try to keep the Corbyn Maniac out of number ten.

WanderingNotLost · 11/05/2017 23:42

Extending abortion rights to women in NI. I was gonna vote for them anyway for what it's worth in my safe fucking Tory Iain Duncan Smith constituency but that sealed the deal for me.

BadLad · 12/05/2017 00:05

Don't worry about citing sources - we'll just take your word for all that.

I suppose it depends what you mean by "weaker economy", but according to this link the UK's economy grew slightly more, in percentage terms, than many other European countries' did in 2016.

If Finland is such a happy country, why is its suicide rate famously high?

JustAnotherPoster00 · 12/05/2017 00:05

All in all I think its a pretty good manifesto by they way its got all the usual suspects frothing on MN, wheeling out all the usual tropes, watch them pile on in a sec lol, happy days Grin

TessTube · 12/05/2017 00:22

Finland was 5th and U.K. 19th

frenchfancy81 · 12/05/2017 00:24

Labour introduced tuition fees...

Headofthehive55 · 12/05/2017 07:26

I remember the horror of British rail....
Didn't labour have to go to the IMF for funds?

Ceto · 12/05/2017 07:48

Headofthehive, if you think British Rail was a horror, you can't have travelled on Southern Rail recently.

Ceto · 12/05/2017 08:14

Interestingly, Theresa May has persuaded my parents to give up a lifetime habit of voting Conservative by the simple expedient of her pronouncements on fox hunting. Smile

TessTube · 12/05/2017 08:31

The foxes have done for my mum too. She's never voted Tory before but had started to get on board with the "strong and stable" line.

They have added more to the national debt than all labour governments since the war combined and this includes when labour built the NHS!

How do you effeciently reduce a debt when you're in a deficit? Of which Labour left a £100 billion budget deficit in 2010, and it's now down to £14 billion....

I know a couple of people who were conservative voters/supporters who have said they will not be voting for them based on this, people who would likely be the worst affected by Tories but it still took the chance of the fox hunting ban to be repealed to make them see sense. Sad

TessTube · 12/05/2017 10:09

That's right, my mum was definitely thinking oh fuck all the disabled people hang on Fox. Hmm
