To think this about Jeremy Kyle?

That he comes across as an abuser in an abusive relationship? (To be clear I mean his persona on his show not him as a person in real life as I don't know him). I find it very creepy and very uncomfortable when, after shouting at guests, yelling and snarling in their faces in order to break them down, then suddenly switches to 'kind' Jeremy, kneeling down beside them, looking up at them as they're crying or close to crying after he shouted at them and saying things in a soft voice like "I get you, sweetheart" or "You're not really that bad, are you?" And if he doesn't get an answer pushes it: "Look at me. You're not bad, are you?" So condescending and sick inducing. It makes my skin crawl and reminds me of an emotional bully in a controlling relationship.

I remember Ant and Dec winding him up on his US show. When it was revealed they weren't genuine guests he came within a whisper of punching them. The look on his face was horrific. He is a hugely unpleasant man.

BitOutOfPractice · 11/05/2017 07:36

You realise that this is a to persona don't you? An act?

Apparently in real life he's lovely.one of my BFF has known his wife all their lives and they are very happily married.

TheFirstMrsDV · 11/05/2017 07:48

You realise that this is a to persona don't you? An act?

How can it be called 'an act' if it has real repercussions?
Are all those women going home with dangerous men because the man passes a lie detector test acting?

You are not talking about a lovely man acting.
YOu are talking about a man who is 'lovely' to those he thinks are worthy and and abusive to those he feels are not.

That isn't an 'act'. That is a choice.

How many people are described as 'lovely', 'can't do enough for you', 'always seemed so kind?' after they have been caught doing horrible things?

We see JK doing horrible things every day so unless all of the other parties are in on the ruse, he is still being abusive.

spongebob5 · 11/05/2017 07:49

I thought he had split from his wife because he was sleeping with their nanny? He's very unpleasant

Catsize · 11/05/2017 07:53

I can never understand why people watched public hangings.

JK is the modern equivalent.

Gwencooper81 · 11/05/2017 07:58

The very worst episode I ever saw ( and it was linked on here) was a woman in her late 50's who'd given her child up for adoption. She alluded to the fact that her husband was violent and that he had raped her repeatedly during their marriage. JK was vile. He was abusive his self. He shouted in her face and he completely ignored the truth of marital rape. He just didn't get it. To the PP it's not an act, it's a choice. The guests are real people and that odious little twerp is messing with their real lives!
I could go on and on but I'd rather not waste a minute more of my time on that vile little shit.
Vile.

TheNaze73 · 11/05/2017 08:01

It's purely pantomime. I can't see why people get sucked in. It's lowest common denominator television at its worst.

Freddystarshamster · 11/05/2017 08:04

Ah yes his guests are "vulnerable" (one of the most over used phrases on mumsnet) They are not "lower working class" either, that's insulting to us who get up at silly o'clock to work in a shit low paid job. Live next to people like this for a month. See how much sympathy you have for their "vulnerability" then.

BastardBloodAndSand · 11/05/2017 08:09

He was bloody fab on his radio show many years ago (( Jezzas confessions )) should have stuck to what he was good at.

shrunkenhead · 11/05/2017 08:14

Yes I agree Freddystarshamster, "vulnerable" is used a lot on here as a euphemism for the underclass.

TheFirstMrsDV · 11/05/2017 08:15

Its attitudes like yours that make this sort of programme so popular Freddy

If these people are not worthy of our concern or sympathy then its fine to exploit them and degrade them on tv isn't it?

Like you are the only person on MN who is keeping it real? Hmm

Live next door to them? Some of us already do, some of us are related to them.
You don't have to like someone to know that treating them like a freaks in a circus tent is wrong.

BitOutOfPractice · 11/05/2017 08:25

how can it be called 'an act' if it has real repercussions?

I said that is persona that JK portrays on the show is an act. Not the real him. In the same way that Anthony Hopkins doesn't really eat people's kidneys with a nice chianti. He's acting a part.

That's not to say that I think what he's doing is great. Or it doesn't have real consequences in real people's lives. It does. And it's odious.

What I'm saying is that it is the format of the programme and the persona that JK is paid to act that causes these things. Not that he is a cunt per se. The character he's playing is a cunt.

Does that make more sense?

Freddystarshamster · 11/05/2017 08:25

It's attitudes like yours which enables them to behave like this in general TheFirstMrsDV

Ah yes. How horrible it must be for them to be forced at gun point to act like animals on national tv.

No one is exploiting or degrading them. They are doing that themselves

TheFirstMrsDV · 11/05/2017 08:27

Well it would if he was being a cunt to people who were in on it Bit
But if you are cunt to people in one setting and then go home and are not a cunt that doesn't mean you are playing a part.
It means you just pick and choose where to be a cunt Grin

HermioneJeanGranger · 11/05/2017 08:28

I actually think Graham is worse.

He's a professional psychiatrist with a degree and yet instead of using his intelligence and education to help people, he goes on a programme with a vile presenter who abuses guests and enables people to stay in dysfunctional, abusive relationships.

Jeremy Kyle is odious, but he's just a bloke in a suit. He has no training or professional qualifications to his name, whereas Graham does, and he enables and supports Jeremy's behaviour and actions.

BitOutOfPractice · 11/05/2017 08:43

Of course it doesn't Mrs DV. Actors who play murderers and psychopaths aren't murderers and psychopaths. They aren't picking and chosing when to be a murderer. They are playing a part that has been created for them. That's exactly what JK is doing. Like you, I don't like it, or the effect it has on others but it is nonetheless a dramatic role he's playing.

It's the format of the show that creates these situations. If it were Sir David Attenborough doing the show it would be the same.

DeleteOrDecay · 11/05/2017 08:58

Sir David Attenborough wouldn't do a show like this because he's not a cunt who enjoys exploiting people. And yes they clearly are vulnerable if they feel going on a tv show to be publicly humiliated is the only way to sort out their problems.

I don't watch it anymore. But used to in my late teens before I wised up and realised what a shit storm it was.

Most people will have caught the odd episode I imagine. It's repeated quite a lot.

HoldBackTheRain · 11/05/2017 09:09

I'm placing bets that FreddyStarrshamster is a tory voter. And I live on an estate where at least 1 person has been on the JK show so yes I have 'lived next door to these people'.

LoveForTulips · 11/05/2017 09:10

BitOutOfPractice I had read that his wife cheated on him while he was in the US and he came back and started a relationship with the Nanny? Doesn't sound like a happy marriage to me!?
I don't like the guy, like others have said - he's unfortunately getting the ratings which mean it will just keep on going!

BitOutOfPractice · 11/05/2017 09:15

Not as far as I know LoveForTulips

LanaKanesLeftNippleTassle · 11/05/2017 09:26

Somone mentioned this upthread and it perfectly encapsulates what I think of the hypocritical, nasty bastard.

WARNING: LOUD DRUM N BASS AND SCENES OF DRUGS AND SEX....so don't play it at work! Grin

Freddystarshamster · 11/05/2017 09:29

Well you'd be wrong. Why would I vote Tory. I'm working class. They hate us.
