To ask how the NHS will be saved by labour

mummytwoshoes · 09/05/2017 12:16

Currently reading a lot of conservative bashing on FB etc about the privatisation of the NHS, I've seen the labour promise to 'save the NHS' but I haven't seen anything about how they will fund this. AIBU to ask if anyone knows?

OP posts:
Annahibiscuits · 09/05/2017 19:42

I will always vote Labour, never Conservative

However, as I understand it, Labour STARTED the process of privatisation of the NHS?

FruitCider · 09/05/2017 19:46

The privatisation of NHS assets began under a Tory government with the introduction of PFIs. But yes you are right, the process started under new labour.

FruitCider · 09/05/2017 19:48

Oh wait, I'm wrong. The national health service and community care act was introduced in 1990. So no, it was the conservatives that changed legislation so health authorities purchased care from NHS trusts.

roarityroar · 09/05/2017 19:55

The debt has increased because its cumulative and because we are still dealing with the aftermath of the 2008 crash. If Labour were in power - heaven forbid - it would have gone up significantly more in the same time.

FruitCider · 09/05/2017 19:56

When you look at the history of national debt I think you find you are incorrect in your claim.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 09/05/2017 19:57

it would have gone up significantly more in the same time.

I take it youre not aware of the debt the tories have increased then?

FruitCider · 09/05/2017 20:00

Here is precisely which political party has increased national debt by the most.

(Hint: it's not labour)

I work really hard for my money and I worked hard to get qualified to earn it - mature student, 4 jobs, degree + Masters

I don't earn a higher wage because I work in the public sector and my pay is frozen

It doesn't make me less fucking hard working or worthy

If you think privatisation and the tendering process only began in 2012 then I'm lost for words...

Annahibiscuits · 09/05/2017 21:08

Jeez, I thought this was a conversation. I don't know much about it at all. This women in the video, appears very knowledgeable I thought

But, I'll fuckers off then

FruitCider · 09/05/2017 21:20

It is a conversation. Really privatisation began in 1990 with the national health service and community care act. To say it began in 2012 when the Health and Social Care Act came about shows a lack of understanding of how entrenched privatisation already is.

The 2012 act has greatly accelerated things, but it was greatly aided by already existing legislation turning regional pockets of the NHS into NHS trusts and making local health authorities responsible for tendering services to the lowest bidder. Lower funding - cuts to services that are not "financially viable" e.g. That don't make profit, leaving vast areas of the country with poor/no resources for various treatments, thus increasing post code lottery, split in the population, bad feelings all round, rivalry, and people taking their eye off the real prize.

Whilst people are moaning about a+e waiting times (remember those services that were cut?) this government has systematically killed the disabled via cuts to welfare due to "tightening up on fraud by making disability testing harder", when in reality the fraud rates for disability benefits were no higher than any other benefit.

People are literally starving and freezing to death because of cuts and more cuts, but god help you if you support JC who wants to end these injustices, because "I'm alight jack".

LadyGlitterSparklesSeriously · 09/05/2017 21:33

Labour might not be able to stop the NHS from dying, so I'm just gonna vote Tory to make sure it fucking does.

Such a shame, so sad, no choice.

roarityroar · 09/05/2017 21:42

Anna - you thought she came across as knowledgeable Confused ?

I thought she came across as a biased campaigner who was barely articulate with her own, practised linea

FruitCider · 09/05/2017 21:47

im alight jack

Grin sort of makes sense really!

ilovegin112 · 09/05/2017 21:57

You could pour billions into the nhs and nothing would change, it needs an overhaul but which party would suggest it?? nobody would and to the op who suggested scrapping Trident, nice thought it would cost billions to scrap

scaryteacher · 09/05/2017 22:01

I think a total restructure and some shrinkage would help the NHS. Why do we need the fifth largest employer on the planet to provide healthcare for a place the size of the British Isles?

x2boys · 09/05/2017 22:47

yes the NHS does need a complete overhaul for a start it needs decent managers who are actually able to make a decision and not just use bullying tactics i had one manager who when the ward i worked on had had a few serious incidents deceide that the best way too improve standards was to call a meeting of all the ward staff and then staff tht visited the ward on a regular basis ie Drs, physios,s ot,s etc and have the staff that visited the ward tell the ward staff how and why the ward staff werw doing an appalling job rather then look at the real reasons which was as always lack of staff.

Valentine2 · 09/05/2017 23:02

Could you please explain how it will take more billions to scrap Trident than it would to haul NHS or at least pour into it enough to save it while we come up with a better plan?
I would much rather not die for a weapon I am sure no one will ever dare use for the fear of the scale of it.
I would much rather you use the weapons of mass destruction and get done with it so human race could have a chance.
And I would much rather that money is spent on the NHS so we could actually save it from collapsing.

I think Labour is a far safer bet for NHS than Tories will ever be. The sight of that weasel Hunt makes my blood boil.

Valentine2 · 09/05/2017 23:03

My point about the weapons of mass destruction is sarcastic before someone starts challenging me on that please.

Onthehighseas · 09/05/2017 23:11

Lets not forget who was the first person to put an NHS hospital up for sale to any buyer - Andy Burnham.

I dont trust any party with the NHS. I worked for an NHS organisation under the last labour government and the waste and lack of accountability was astonishing. A group of us went to a conference and were put up in a Malmaison. A colleague flew to a conference despite the cost because they didnt want to do the drive. There were awaydays agogo at jawdroppngly lovely venues which cost a fortune. Wherever we went for a meeting, or organised an event, we stopped in the very best hotels. Staff took redundancy and came back as 'consultants'. It was truly distasteful.

Its that or cuts to the bone, I'm not sure which is worse Sad

Valentine2 · 09/05/2017 23:28

I am sure that is a very serious situation that you have just described. In fact, this can be considered somewhat criminal under the current circumstances. So I would work on keeping the money available (not Tories) and working on accountability.
If a machine is leaking oil and is inefficient, you work hard to make it more efficient rather than throw the only machine you have.

Siwdmae · 09/05/2017 23:33

I have the solution! Just ensure that all the car park money from hospitals goes to the NHS! It will be the richest institution in the world!

Seriously, I fail to see how Labour will magically save the NHS. Maybe we should stop paying for that awful woman to have breast enhancements then want a reduction, Josie someone?

user1471439240 · 09/05/2017 23:39

Uk population is 65 million.
Nhs employees are 1.4 million.
For every 46 people there is an Nhs employee.
Just keep throwing money at it.
Mind = blown.

Confused Why is your mind blown? My mind is blown at the oversimplification you have done there. Can you please tell us what you are trying to say there? That this ratio should go up or should it go down? How many of them employees are doctors and nurses and how many are other personnels? How many are actually recommended per head in a population of our size and age expectations and how many do we have? Any idea?
