I have a friend who's daughter is a year younger than mine. My daughter is 7 years old. She worked at the nursery where my daughter went. I remember her making nice compliments about my daughter's clothes . She was a single mother at the time and working part time. She asked me if I could sell my daughter's clothes to her once she's out grown of them. I said of course and I had started to give all my daughter's clothes ( good condition ones ) to her for her daughter. I didn't want anything for them. Couple of times she brought me bunch of flowers as a way of saying thank you. I felt good about helping a friend. Clothes were all good and all from Next . Since my daughter had started to school we rarely saw each other. But I still continued to do my good deed until this year. ( I haven't sorted my daughter's clothes yet for this year. ) I recently met up with her for coffe after a long time . (Out of blue she asked me to meet up with her ) . I paid for my own coffe. She has a good job and earning well now. I don't know if IABU but I kinda expected her to pay it for me after what I did for her many years. We are also friends on facebook. I saw she was selling all the clothes I gave for her daughter on one of Facebook selling page last night. She is selling them as bulk ; 2-3 years etc .. and each bin bag is £15. She put " all from Next " on her advert. I didn't feel good about it at all. I know they are her daughter's now but she could give them away for free to someone ?! AIBU to think like this ?? I can't stop thinking about it.

Astro I've never sold on clothes that I've gotten for free nor any toys that I have paid for. I find it much easier to donate to the local heart charity and hope they one day find a cure.

runloganrun101 · 09/05/2017 19:01

People who accept free hand me downs and then tries sell them down are really vile in my opinion. First of all you wouldn't even make money as it's not even second hand but third hand, so it's not about the cash. It's about making a quick buck on a friend's favour and I find that distasteful.

Next time give your DC's handmedowns to charity or donate them to the hospital/local children's nurseries: it'll be sure to go to a better cause then.

Wow, talk about insincere gifts.
"Here's a bunch of nice stuff. Oh, & here's the long list of unspoken rules how you are permitted to use or dispose of it." Eeek.

tinnylittlethings · 09/05/2017 19:42

I will definitely donate all clothes to the women refugee in our town. Thank you .

run when I give handmedowns to friends, I don't care what they do with them, I am glad they are not cluttering up my home anymore. I hate gifts with strings, if you want the receiver to do something with them later, tell them, or don't give them, give them to charity instead.

Craiconwithit · 09/05/2017 19:43

So you gave hand me down second hand clothes to a friend and now you're annoyed that she's selling them, even though they're now third hand?

Who appointed you 'The Lady Bountiful'?
YABU and completely ridiculous.
You need to help out in a Food Bank a few times a week and stop being so self righteous about your shitty moral code.
A moral code (!) that doesn't seem to register how acquiring 10 bags of new clothes a year might possibly be considered excessive consumption.
'Let them eat cake...'

DontPullThatTubeOut · 09/05/2017 19:43

You do that, don't be upset if they sell them on or if the people who use them sell them on. You won't even know.

Aeroflotgirl · 09/05/2017 19:44

For the record, she won't get much for those clothes, despite them being Next. Its hardly worth the hassle tbh, that is why I give a lot of mine away to charity or friends.

wendywashington · 09/05/2017 19:49

They weren't second hand. The op bought lots for her daughter ( little bit older ) and passed them on.
The woman received a bag each year - she is selling those . She has quite a few years worth. It was a regular donation. When op's daughter outgrew them she passed them on.
Probably in excellent condition.

tinnylittlethings · 09/05/2017 20:21

I always donate good for food banks . I also donate money for charities.

Yes I buy many clothes for my DD and I am happy about it. I also donate many other things to the schools or charities . I also always pass any toys or books etc to the charities or schools which are given to me by my friends. I don't sell to make profit with stuff that my friends give me for free. I pass them on free ! No, I am definitely not a

self righteous person at all. I found very cheeky how she's acting.

The clothes I have given to her were immaculate condition. They had no stains or rips on . They were like new to be honest. My daughter couldn't even wear some of the clothes . So there were quite few brand new ones in. I don't like her selling them. She was gonna give them away for free . That's what she told me few times in the past . It's not about the money at all. Thank you for your reply Smile

Oh, & here's the long list of unspoken rules

Yes there are it's called common decency

Aeroflotgirl · 09/05/2017 20:52

Op you should have just donated them to chRity then if that's how you feel. Once you give someone something, it's theirs to do with what they wish, unless you told her that you woukd like her to give them to charity or give them back. She won't get much for them, even if they are in immaculate condition.

zaws · 09/05/2017 20:57

Thanks for clarifying. It wasn't clear if the clothes were from next. I think that's important.

Grin

You do sound like a martyr OP, you sound like you want her to be forever indebted to you for giving her the clothes. It wouldnt bother me if someone sold on stuff I gave them, I couldn't be arsed to do it myself.

DontPullThatTubeOut · 09/05/2017 21:41

Martyr. That's all you are. What a sad life to lead 😔

tinnylittlethings · 09/05/2017 22:21

I expected her to give them away for free to the charity or someone in need. That's what she said she would do !

tinnylittlethings · 09/05/2017 22:27

Read my post / replies properly ! I don't want them . I expected her to give them away to the charity or to someone who needs them. She told me that's what she was going to do few times in the past years.

Well, I asked about some opinions... I have been all honest.. However some replies are unbelievable! I am open for any opinions but calling me names?? That's just so childish. . (Of course you are not one of them at all ) . Thank you for your opinion.
