To not go back and pay for this?

Feeling a bit crap today. Went to the supermarket. Put my rucksack in the trolley and did my shopping. Went through self scan.
Got back to the car and noticed an item had rolled under my rucksack and I hadn't paid for it. It cost about £2.50.
Should I go back and pay for it (tomorrow) or just keep it and feel a bit guilty.
Walking from the car to shop and back to the car again would have pushed me over the edge because of being ill.
WWYD?

...paid for it as soon as you...

Responses in threads such as this really show up those who lack a sense or right and wrong.

I'm sorry you're feeling so unwell OP. Hoping you feel better soon. However I have to say I agree with user1489, theft is theft whether deliberate or accidental.
I'd own up next time you're in the supermarket.
While you're unwell, might you consider getting your shopping delivered to take the stress of going out to the shops away?

WonkoTheSane42 · 07/05/2017 15:37

If you were well enough to go shopping and to drive home, you could have walked across the carpark and returned the item.

No. This is something that only someone who has never been long-term ill or disabled could say. Try reading this:

OP, just scan an extra one the next time you go in. And be kind to yourself.

I think you are all being a bit harsh. OP you sound like an honest soul just pop something in the food bank next time. Jeez I really can't believe the perfect people on here!!!!

I really wouldn't worry about it. The cost to you of going back, in terms of your wellbeing, is significant. The cost to them will never even be noticed. It was an accident and you feel bad, which means you're not about to start a lucrative shoplifting career. They know accidents like that will happen sometimes, just like they know jars of jam will get knocked off shelves sometimes. It doesn't matter.

Now if I were talking to my DC about this, I'd tell them theft is theft and so on because young children think in moral absolutes, and won't perceive the degree of difference between this and a deliberate theft. As adults, surely we can take the nuances into account. Confused

I wouldn't worry about it. Cashiers sometimes forget to scan things too, these things happen. If you want, you could pop the money in a charity box.
