To not go back and pay for this?

Feeling a bit crap today. Went to the supermarket. Put my rucksack in the trolley and did my shopping. Went through self scan.
Got back to the car and noticed an item had rolled under my rucksack and I hadn't paid for it. It cost about £2.50.
Should I go back and pay for it (tomorrow) or just keep it and feel a bit guilty.
Walking from the car to shop and back to the car again would have pushed me over the edge because of being ill.
WWYD?

One if the big supermarkets I wouldn't worry if it was a small independent shop I'd pay next time I was in.

HildaOg · 06/05/2017 16:25

I wouldn't worry about it. You got something for free. No big deal.

WorraLiberty · 06/05/2017 16:25

Oh come Sapphire, it could have meant she was off her tits on Lemsip.

I honestly wouldn't worry about it now OP.

Hope you feel better soon Thanks

waybalooo · 06/05/2017 16:26

Yanbu
If it is a large supermarket I wouldn't give a sh1t
They rob us blind every day!
Put the £2.50 in a charity box... they need it more!

MudCity · 06/05/2017 16:28

I really wouldn't worry about it. It was a mistake, that's all. Please don't give yourself a hard time about it. Put something in the food bank next time or give £2.50 to charity...that's good enough! No need to feel embarrassed though. Things like this are easily done when you are tired or unwell. Had the item been more expensive, say £20, I would say call the shop and explain but otherwise don't worry! Flowers

TheMysteriousJackelope · 06/05/2017 16:30

Scan a similarly priced item twice next time you are in there. Hopefully it won't stuff up their inventory too much if it's only one item.

Please don't do the 'give to charity' thing. How would you feel if someone took money from you and then smugly told you 'I gave it to charity so it's not really stealing'.

incogKNEEto · 06/05/2017 16:31

Also Worra, there's no need to go around being snippy, you assumed from what op said that it was a minor illness, maybe she has been ill for so long she always feels rubbish and on this occasion felt worse than usual?

Why not read what the op says and base your reply on what you have read not whatever story you've concocted in your head..

SapphireStrange · 06/05/2017 16:31

Got there before me, incog! Grin

You could just be a bit less mean-minded, Worra.

Xenadog · 06/05/2017 16:32

OP, don't worry about it. Supermarkets factor in for mistakes as well as intentional shoplifting in their pricing. The number of times I have been overcharged by cashiers scanning things twice (by all the big name supermarkets) is massive. I hardly ever check my receipts but when I do I always spot a mistake - very rarely go back for the refund due to the inconvenience but it does mean that the one time I brought home a head of garlic I hadn't paid for I didn't bat an eyelid.

If you are bothered then pop something into the food bank next time which is worth the same as the item you brought home. Then don't think any more of it.

OP l would go with the food bank suggestion, as you say you will probably get a funny look if you go in another day to try and pay for it. Under normal circumstances l would always go back and pay, but it is done now. I hope you are feeling better soon.

Mrsmadevans · 06/05/2017 16:34

Hope you feel better soon op as for your dilemma ? If I do shoplift accidentally .I do not make a habit of it but these things do happen.Or l get undercharged..... then I just think of all the times they have overcharged me.... or charged me for 2 when I only bought 1 ...you should check your till receipts you will be really shocked how often the do this I just think it is a little bit of payback iyswim .

Out2pasture · 06/05/2017 16:40

Call speak to the manager.

TheFirstMrsDV · 06/05/2017 16:42

If you want to pay for it it won't make a lot of difference if you pay for it next time you are there. You don't have to run back on the same day if you are too poorly. That won't make you more honest.

I hope you feel better soon.

Deathraystare · 06/05/2017 16:46

I have the opposite problem that I leave things behind I have paid for!!

Happyhippy45 · 06/05/2017 16:46

My mum checks her receipts every time. She goes back if she's been over or undercharged.
I don't. Unless there is a massive difference in what I expected to pay.

ChippersAndRunt · 06/05/2017 16:50

Well... I don't think you need to go back.

Put the money in a donation box or give it to a homeless person etc...

Or donate something to the food bank the next time you go shopping?

Mummyoflittledragon · 06/05/2017 16:52

Call speak to the manager.

That'll cost the shop far more than the money lost and they'll just tell you to forget it. And it'll take half an hour to get through costing you money.

VinoTime · 06/05/2017 17:14

I'd go back and pay for it when you're feeling up to it, OP. Failing that, ring the shop and see if they can take the payment over the phone Smile I'm sorry to hear you're not feeling very well Flowers

Having worked in a supermarket, I find the whole "if it's a large chain store I wouldn't bother" stance so ignorant Sad The OP's £2.50 item will not be the only item to be unaccounted for on a busy Saturday, and it all comes straight out of the shrink (unaccounted for losses) budget. Shrink budgets directly impact overtime budgets. If 100 items at £2.50 have become lost in space over the last couple of days (easily done), that's potentially £250 worth of overtime money that's just been taken away from minimum wage staff who are likely on zero/minimal hour contracts. It equates to around 32-ish hours of overtime in my old job being scrapped from the rotas. So to anyone who thinks it's okay to not pay for items for whatever reason, without meaning to sound holier than thou, it's really not. £2.50 may not sound like much, but you end up contributing to a bigger problem that can seriously imapct the financial welfare of staff.

I know a lot of folk end up feeling pleased they got a 'freebie' and I can understand the fuss of needing to go back in, but it's a 'big picture' scenario. It's a total butterfly effect and I wish more people realised what not paying for that one cheap freebie really meant. I used to lose countless overtime hours to shrink - I'm a single mum and I relied on that overtime to keep us going. PLEASE pay for your things, people.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 06/05/2017 17:14

I would just draw it up to an honest mistake, and forget about it.

Food bank donation is a good idea if you need to appease your conscience!

Hope you are feeling better soon OP.

caoraich · 06/05/2017 17:15

I've done this before- and it was quite a big item in a homeware type shop. Scanned the little things and forgot to use the stretchy scanner thing to scan the big thing in my trolley. No one stopped me and I didn't check the receipt until I got home.

I just popped in the next day and paid at the customer service desk. They seemed surprised and appreciative and gave me a money off voucher for next time I was in!

wendywashington · 06/05/2017 17:18

Flowers sorry it was a shit day.
Ease your conscience- it was just a mistake.

MargotLovedTom1 · 06/05/2017 17:20

Vinotime - as other posters have said, I've been overcharged countless more times than I've been undercharged. Those incidences of accidentally putting items through twice, or not registering the BOGOF offer at the till, or charging full price when an item is actually on offer that week probably more than offset the inadvertent theft scenarios as per the OP.

MargotLovedTom1 · 06/05/2017 17:23

And yes, I realise you talk about the 'shrink budget' affecting staffing etx but that just means the supermarket benefits twice over. They overcharge customers and shaft their workers.

Out2pasture · 06/05/2017 17:28

Surely if the manager says to forget it, you forget it and sleep well at night.
I'd think it worth my time.
Some stores tills have prompts to "check the bottom of the cart" for the till staff.
If mgt are more aware of how losses are occurring they might invest in updated technology.
