Parents of teenagers: AIBU?

Tell me honestly if this is normal for an 18 yr old girl. I'm so completely done with telling her to tidy her room. Sorry the photo is sideways.

OP posts:
SpikeGilesSandwich · 06/05/2017 12:07

Mine was way worse than that, still is tbh. Why are you so bothered? It's her room, just don't look at it.

Aducknotallama · 06/05/2017 12:10

I am a neat freak and my ds does keep his room tidy but tbh that doesn't look too bad at all. Plus she is 18, leave her to it!

WomblingThree · 06/05/2017 12:10

People who are saying it's her room: unless she is paying market rent, it is still her parents' house, and as such they have the right to expect that part of it is not kept in a squalid condition.

My 20 and 17 year olds' rooms are disgusting, and it upsets me as I feel they don't respect their home. I'm helping my daughter with hers tomorrow, as she is totally overwhelmed by it. It won't last, but it will make me feel better about it for a while 😕

Elphaba99 · 06/05/2017 12:18

Completely normal. Sorry. If I can't get in my teen dd's room to deposit laundry without risking life or limb, then I tell her it needs a tidy.

My teen is also an avid collector of glasses and crockery in her room. That's the only time I get a bit ranty - when I have to drink squash from a mug because anything resembling a drinking glass is in her room.

I must admit since dd's room was redecorated and she chose the decor, she keeps it MUCH tidier.

pansydePotter · 06/05/2017 12:19

Normal but you will get your revenge. My GD is 20, my DD constantly rages to me about her room I say nothing, but my daughter knows I am thinking "Revenge is mine Sayeth the Gran"

BertrandRussell · 06/05/2017 12:27

"People who are saying it's her room: unless she is paying market rent, it is still her parents' house, and as such they have the right to expect that part of it is not kept in a squalid condition"

Why? Just shut the door.

Looks clean enough, she just needs to sort out her stuff and put it away. Is there somewhere convenient to put it away? Storage under bed looks packed already. Looks like she could do with a little dressing table and a bit of cheap make-up storage.

She could have it looking tidy in 10 minutes, that's what matters. I don't like looking at mess either, but that's all it is, it's not dirty. Just keep the door shut.

onceandneveragain · 06/05/2017 12:46

It's messy but not overly messy, and no empty cups, old food etc which is what in my mind changes a room from messy to dirty.

If she pulled the covers over the bed and chucked all the stuff at the foot of it into one of those trunks/storage case it would look pristine in about 5 minutes.

YABU to post a picture of her room on the internet though. Would you like it if she took a picture of e.g a meal you'd made or outfit worn that she doesn't think looks good and put it on the internet mocking you?

hmcAsWas · 06/05/2017 12:48

"Why? Just shut the door."

Again - rooms need to be hovered regularly (veteran of house moth infestation)

StewPots · 06/05/2017 12:49

That's pretty tidy compared to my DD15. You can see floor!! Grin

LightYears · 06/05/2017 12:52

Look how tidy the dressing table is, I'm impressed.

gregoriesgirl · 06/05/2017 12:53

She's not an 18 year old girl, she's an 18 year woman.

The room looks fine, it's her room and if she wants it slightly untidy then it's her choice.

Iwantacampervan · 06/05/2017 12:53

emilybrontescorset
Did she have revision to do? My teenage daughter spent ages tidying her room recently but as a distraction technique from exam revision!

Fauchelevent · 06/05/2017 12:54

What a tidy bedroom!

hmcAsWas · 06/05/2017 12:55

I hate to quote the Daily Fail but it was a useful link found on googling

‘Some years, particular species will breed well, for no discernable reason. But we certainly aren’t helping by stockpiling unworn and unwashed clothes, rarely opening windows, and not cleaning our houses properly.’

from the article below:
house moths

So as a house moth 'survivor' I personally don't do the cool mum thing of leaving my teenagers to it

Questioningeverything · 06/05/2017 12:56

Christ that's tidier than my room 😩

Yogagirl123 · 06/05/2017 12:57

My room as a teenager was a complete mess, my Nan, was always tidying it up, not that I was grateful, at the time. It's just a teenage thing. I have two teenage sons, who's rooms aren't too bad, certainly a lot tidier than my room was!

LightYears · 06/05/2017 12:58

Thinking about it, if my mum had posted a picture of my bedroom on a public forum I'd be really upset, it is an invasion of privacy.

HazelBite · 06/05/2017 13:00

Not only house moths beware the dreaded carpet beetle!

LightYears · 06/05/2017 13:03

The carpet doesn't look like it needs hoovering anyway.

PollyPelargonium52 · 06/05/2017 13:06

When I was 19 I had left home but I was so messy for quite a good few years I think it is just something we slowly learn.

Now I wouldn't DREAM of being as untidy as I used to be I can remember how I kept my first flat once I had left home and it was a real tip mess everywhere unused tampons on the piano and leaving things all over the place which I would never do now in a million years!!

DontBeASalmon · 06/05/2017 13:07

It's perfectly normal.

It's also normal for you to request that she cleans her bedroom in YOUR house! Mine have the choice to clean their room or let the cleaner do it, but cost taken from their allowance obviously. They prefer tidying up and cleaning themselves and it only takes a couple of strong reminder Grin

PollyPelargonium52 · 06/05/2017 13:08

One more thing to add - I heard about the house moth invasion on the radio and got so freaked that I bought lavender smellies that you can place at the bottom of the wardrobes (like an Air Wick). Crossing the fingers clothes don't get infested .....

CountessYgritte · 06/05/2017 13:09

Normal
If not tidy!

I'd hate it though xx
