This is a goady thread

I have private school for my children. I own my house outright. I have private medical insurance. I have savings in the bank. I own a second property outright which is let out. I go on many many holidays a year (approximately 6-8). The absolute devastation that the tories are reaping on public services will largely pass me by.

I vote labour.

WTF do people without money (and all the things outlined above) vote Tory? THEY ARE NOT ON YOUR SIDE. THEY DON'T CARE. I see people without any of the aforementioned luxuries cheering about voting someone in who will have a guaranteed negative impact on their lives.

Off to find a wall to bang my head on.

AIBU to say I don't care that this is a goady thread.

(You can say I am troll but mumsnet will confirm I have been a member for years.)

I have a different financial structure to you but am very financially stable. I wouldn't vote labour because they're in too much of a mess. The tories are running this country into the ground. I'm voting lib dem. My area is very "blue" but predominately remain and hope my vote will help to oust them. YADNBU to not vote Tory.

Ginslinger · 05/05/2017 08:48

I agree absolutely -

hellsbellsmelons · 05/05/2017 08:48

I'm a Tory voter - have been for all my voting life.
But..... yesterday I didn't vote Tory.
My ExP thinks I'm going soft.
But it's just not right for our country.
But then... what is??
The trigger has already been pulled.
Would Corbin get good deals with Brexit???
He just seems way too soft.
It's like Sophie's choice right now out there!

cannotbelievethistoday · 05/05/2017 08:49

Lapinrose - I don't understand your post? Are you boasting about being rich and voting in a way that will make you richer still?

I like the Neil Kinnock quote.

OP posts:
TeaForever · 05/05/2017 08:51

Yep. I'm a pauper (relatively speaking, obviously not by global standards), and have none of the things you mention. I could never ever vote Tory. I don't understand why any of my fellow paupers could ever vote Tory.

I'm trying to soothe myself with the thought that the turnout yesterday was only about 26%, so not entirely representative.

I think the right-wing press is largely to blame for all the Tory voting - lies, lies and more lies from them. Sadly people are falling for it Sad

24HourTrainer · 05/05/2017 08:55

Wealthy and a virtue-signaller, aren't you amazing OP.

I have 3 properties, public schooled children (not one of those ghastly places less than a Century old) a Range Rover and room for a pony. Does that mean I'm better than you or worse?

Whenwillthesunshine · 05/05/2017 08:55

I could never vote Tory,if my dad was here now I have no idea what he would do he loved Maggie Thatcher (no idea why!!)
Mum was disabled and they claimed Income Support and DLA,its scary to think what could have become of them now.
Jeremy Corbyn is a twat but I'm voting for the party not him, hopefully if they win(which unfortunately they won't) he can somehow be voted out as prime minister.
Is not worth thinking about another 5 years under Teresa May its bloody scary.

Peanutbutterrules · 05/05/2017 08:55

Baffles me completely. Esp for local elections.

Sadly it seems the Tories are good at making simple, strong statements that resonate with people. And frankly I'm not sure how much people 'think', rather than hear sound bites and go 'yeah - that makes sense'.

Tories are successfully making the General Election a one issue election - Brexit negotiations. Thereby stifling debate on health, education, welfare...ARGH

Elendon · 05/05/2017 08:55

I think that a certain mindset don't want to know the truth. Rather like the person who stuffs the bills in the drawer.

YANBU OP.

Cocklodger · 05/05/2017 08:56

YANBU op. STBXH and I are similar to you,
We vote labour too. It's dumbfounding. I've left the uk because I can see it's gone to shit for a lot of people and I quite frankly
Hate the change that has happened in the last few years. Hospitals and departments shut down, nhs recruitment crisis, food banks at record heights, homelessness in my home town is horrendous. 12 or so years ago it was quite upsetting and shocking to see someone who was homeless and on the streets. Up until a month or so ago I commuted via my home town and the sights are horrible. The train station, shops nearby and walls lining the car parks next to the station were full of rough sleepers. I give what I can and always try to stop for a chat but when you see 30 people in a row you can't help them all :(

PhilODox · 05/05/2017 08:57

I have all the things you have, bar the holidays. (And yes, I'd kill for a holiday, but illness prevents travel).
I have never, and likely will never vote labour or conservative.
How on earth could corbyn, McConnell and Abbott run the country? It would be an utter shambles. I don't support the conservative:s austerity measures, it their policies on many issues, but at least they have a government, albeit staffed by people that look like tax accountants.
And please, don't even raise the spectre of Blair returning.
Industry in Britain is dead.
So now the Labour party is dead.
It's time for a credible, socialist alternative.
Oh, did you just see that flying pig?

ARumWithAView · 05/05/2017 08:58

You'll be flamed for being patronising or not supporting democracy or trying to disenfranchise the underprivileged. But YANBU. I don't understand how people can post on here about the working poor, the removal or reduction of benefits, the lack of support for job-seekers, increased use of food banks, education cuts, NHS cuts, NHS privitisation, public service cuts... and then get offended by any suggestion their vote has brought us closer to all this.

It's like Trump voters. The new healthcare bill will enable insurers to massively hike premiums for older customers, opt out of cancer treatment coverage and emergency care, deny coverage to people with pre-existing conditions and leave about 20 million people uninsured. So many people on low incomes will suffer, many of them Trump supporters. And they voted for this.

In this country, the real frustration is the fucking disgraceful state of the Labour party right now. I do understand how people can feel conflicted about voting for them. No real opposition. Just utterly hopeless.

dudsville · 05/05/2017 08:58

I read a political history book years ago, can't recall the name or the details well enough to sound literate here, but it described the development of new democracies like in the US where a small handful of wealthy land owners brought over indentured servants and slaves and kept the two at war with each other while they promised them better lives. I'm sorry for such a simple rendition of something I'm sure must be really complex but I always think of this when my poverty bound family vote on the right. Somehow they get duped into thinking "the man" is really going to finally clear the way for them to climb the ladder. I'm the wealthiest in my family and I vote labour. Another family has grown more liberal in his older age and so for that reason now votes left. But the fact the those most in need vote conservative gets under my skin. I get that my family don't want "help outs" and I really get that, but why vote for those with money to have more money rather than for everyone to have basic health and education?

chopchopchop · 05/05/2017 08:58

Similar situation here too. With you all the way. We'll be voting tactically next month as our once Lib Den constituency went Tory last time.

Mummyoflittledragon · 05/05/2017 08:58
  1. You only have 3 properties. Is that all? Op is not being a goady fucker unlike others. There's plenty of us out there with more than 3!
herethereandeverywhere · 05/05/2017 08:59

24Hour Trainer the answer to your question all depends on whether you vote to make yourself richer or care about those that cannot afford private healthcare or education, regardless f the fact it will hit you in the pocket.

That was the point of the OP you see.

*I vote Tory. Less immigration definitely.
Lower taxes. *

According to whom? Overall, taxes have risen under the Tories. They raised VAT almost as soon as they were voted in, and although they cut business tax they've raised the tax burden on small business owners.

And lower immigration? Although they've talked about cutting low paid immigrant numbers after Brexit they haven't actually told us how they're going to achieve that.

So, one's a lie and one's a fantasy.

user1471545174 · 05/05/2017 09:02

I started with very little and made my own money as an adult. I am comfortable but not as well off as you. My vote has floated a bit but I would not vote Labour or UKIP. I have no intention of voting for anyone this time.

I think OP you are part of the problem with Labour. Labour is an anti-capitalist party and is anti-preferential education. You embrace both, with nary a thought for the philosophical mismatch. Put less politely, you come over as a hypocrite.

You shouldn't be baffled, you baffle others.

The people without the things you have might want the things you have, one day. Unfortunately your party of preference wants to keep them collectively dependent and helpless.

It can't be that much of a reach to understand this, surely?

cannotbelievethistoday · 05/05/2017 09:02

24hour trainer. I am amazing because I have to put with people like you.

I could vote for even more personal wealth and you would congratulate me for doing it. You would congratulate me for voting to lower cooperation tax. You would congratulate me for voting to reduce inheritance tax. You would congratulate me for voting to keep VAT off private school fees.

The irony. You attack me because I vote for none of those things. I vote for the benefit of society.

OP posts:
putdownyourphone · 05/05/2017 09:02

Because they think its immigrants and refugees stealing their luxuries, not the tories

Because they will personally be better off through taxes etc?

Because they can vote for whomsoever they like?

Because they think that Corbyn is a waste of space?

I do love the way that some labour voters use it on here as yet another way to virtue signal.

Most people outside of the MN bubble vote for the party that they feel will benefit them the most.

PhilomenaCatLover · 05/05/2017 09:04

YADNBU. We're not as well off, but definitely in the 50p tax bracket, private medical, and pondering private schools. I've always voted Labour. (Except now since we've moved and it's tactical to vote LibDem here).

I'm surrounded by people from the City and lawyers and consultants; I understand why they vote Tory (although most are first generation immigrants Hmm). I really cannot understand how others vote Tory though!!

DJBaggySmalls · 05/05/2017 09:04

You have all those things now, but you are sensible and aware that people can and do lose everything. Or have nothing to start with.
And you can check the facts for yourselves; things are not better under right wing govts unless you are in the top 5%. It benefits business. But socialism is better for people.

Not surprisingly, theres a Nordic model for that.
