Outside my DS's school (where he's been attending for the last 4 years), parents always park on the double yellow lines at drop Off and pickup times. I'm no different. Yet today or of the blue, one mum who arrived after me but managed to find a parking bay, started giving it to me loudly, saying I was breaking the law by parking on the double yellows and was responsible for knocking children off the road and killing them. I let her go on, and held my tongue simply as I didn't think it appropriate to create a scene right outside the school in front of kids etc. She was letting it rip, in front of her son. I kept my cool ...But I've come home, thinking about this incident, and really quite upset.

why do you need to park so near to school? if there are mobility issues you can ask school for special dispensation, maybe a spot in the car park. if none, then you should park further away. OR WALK.

PhilODox · 02/05/2017 19:54

And yes, what hulababy said. It is appropriate to yell in the street. If I see a child bolting for the road, you think I won't shout out?

Andrewofgg · 02/05/2017 19:55

FrancisCrawford Are you local to Haddington? Can you, can anyone, tell us how that is working in practice? Is there someone checking who is driving there and asking for ID with address?

Or is it just business as usual where the decent types observe the rules and the selfish gits make up reasons why they don't have to?

paxillin · 02/05/2017 19:56

Shouting is a bit shitty, in front of children even shittier, but not dangerous.

Parking on double yellow lines in front of a school is extremely shitty and dangerous to boot.

NameyMcNamechangechange · 02/05/2017 19:57

If she hasn't shouted, you'd be parking there again today wouldn't you! Job done.

greathat · 02/05/2017 19:58

Hopefully you've learned your lesson. Won't do it again, and will be able to smugly walk past all the other people who are still ILLEGALLY parked

pennypickle · 02/05/2017 19:59

YABU. Double yellow lines are there for a reason - especially outside a school entrance!

grannytomine · 02/05/2017 20:01

The school my children attended had no parking on school side of the road but you could park opposite. I pulled in one morning and let DD out. People like you parked opposite, a helpful mum called my daughter out to cross the road and someone came round the illegally parked car. I saw her go flying through the air and she was a couple of inches from hitting the kerb which would probably have fractured her skull. She was unconscious and had two fractures. 16 years later she still suffers the after affects.

Are you being unreasonable? Do you need to ask?

darwinsbabe · 02/05/2017 20:03

You're getting a hard time here.

You parked on double yellows...hardly the crime of the century Confused

Shouting at you publicly in front of people just makes her look bonkers

Viviennemary · 02/05/2017 20:03

Maybe after this you'll think twice about parking illegally. She saved you a parking fine. Be grateful.

grannytomine · 02/05/2017 20:04

darwinsbabe, my daughter got a much harder time because of bone idle people who have some priority over the law.

TrollMummy · 02/05/2017 20:07

OP are you one of the usual people at my DCs school that shamelessly park as close as possible to the school despite several requests from the school not to. Are you one of those that puts their own needs above the safety of others? I have mentally ranted at people like you and maybe one day I'll do it for real like this lady.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 02/05/2017 20:08

You parked on double yellows...hardly the crime of the century

It is illegal and can cause accidents. Prehaps the mum knew of a child that had been hurt.

paxillin · 02/05/2017 20:10

..hardly the crime of the century perhaps not, but surely potentially endangering the life and health of children is worse than stealing on a "crime" scale?

grannytomine · 02/05/2017 20:12

Paxillin, you are so right, I would prefer to be robbed after all it is only stuff, my daughter's pain is another thing.

DontPullThatTubeOut · 02/05/2017 20:19

I'm actually laughing at the fact that the op posted this issue on this site Grin

Witchend · 02/05/2017 20:21

I wouldn't yell at you, but I would mutter to myself.

It's not all the parents parking there if it's like our school. It's the same selfish entitled idiots who think it's their right to park as close to the school as possible, without a thought of the other 609 children that then have to negotiate the hazard.
They're also the same ones that think nothing of turning round in the entrance as the children are coming out of school.

Trb17 · 02/05/2017 20:26

Seriously?!

Find a legal parking space and WALK the rest.

Don't illegally park near schools. I'm so sick of people thinking their snowflakes should get dropped off right outside the door no matter the rules of the road or other kids safety! Even if it's raining. You won't melt!! People parking illegally outside schools risk kids lives and deserve all they get imo Angry

TinselTwins · 02/05/2017 20:26

You parked on double yellows...hardly the crime of the century confused

parking on double yellow lines outside a school can block pedstrians out of view from other road users

i.e. kids can get hit by a car, potentially killed! It happened at DDs school as a direct result of parents parking on double yellows

Garlicansapphire · 02/05/2017 20:40

Ah well. At least you didn't kill anyone or get a ticket.

Maybe walk, cycle or get the bus? (Sorry I live in a city with plenty of these options...). Still you could park further away and then walk - for a little exercise.

PurpleCrazyHorse · 02/05/2017 20:44

I wouldn't have shouted at you, but I would have photographed your car and emailed the picture to our local police team. They love a photo of illegal parking and you may well have found it quite embarrassing to have a panda car parked up outside your house while they discussed your parking with you Grin

On the plus side, my incessant photographing has resulted in far fewer cars obstructing the pavement on my walk to school a quite a bit more community Policing presence at school drop off and pickup times. In fact DD was moaning so loudly about someone's inconsiderate parking that they heard her and moved their car while apologising to us!

You were wrong and a parent called you on it. Good for them. Get to school earlier and park in a safe place or make other arrangements.

Don't park like a twat and you won't get shouted at for parking like a twat. Simple!
