Outside my DS's school (where he's been attending for the last 4 years), parents always park on the double yellow lines at drop Off and pickup times. I'm no different. Yet today or of the blue, one mum who arrived after me but managed to find a parking bay, started giving it to me loudly, saying I was breaking the law by parking on the double yellows and was responsible for knocking children off the road and killing them. I let her go on, and held my tongue simply as I didn't think it appropriate to create a scene right outside the school in front of kids etc. She was letting it rip, in front of her son. I kept my cool ...But I've come home, thinking about this incident, and really quite upset.

And here is the reason why you are seeing the Government making noises about making roads with schools on it car free during school hours because people cannot obey the rules and continue to drive and park dangerously. You know that this is already being trialled in London.

It's never nice to be shouted at, but she was right. Maybe you looked like a soft target, or she spent her morning screaming at everyone who parked on the double yellow lines, or she's gradually working her way through the parents who park there.

I'd have just contacted parking enforcement and had the whole lot of you ticketed, because I am as mean as a snake.

AgentProvocateur · 02/05/2017 19:28

"I do it because everyone does it" HmmHmm

loverlybunchofcoconuts · 02/05/2017 19:30

My DCs school had this issue, but they got the police to show up and tell all the illegal parker's to shift, just to make it clear that there was no unofficial exception to the law, for parents!
That really shouldn't he necessary though - people need to set their kids a better example.

purplepixy · 02/05/2017 19:31

Definitely unreasonable for parking on double yellow lines.

Just because other people do doesn't make it right!

I loathe lazy, irresponsible parking. Even more so outside a school. While I wouldn't necessarily take it upon myself to shout at someone, I would however definitely be on the side of the person telling you that it's dangerous etc! Seriously, just park safely somewhere further away, I'm sure you & your kids will cope!

Hulababy · 02/05/2017 19:36

On one of the other threads OP has said that she now won't park on the double lines as she knows it is wrong.

So tbh - good on that other parent for shouting in this situation. It means that there is now one less dangerously parked car outside the school. Shouting obviously worked and has had a positive effect.

It's never appropriate to shout at people in the street, whatever they are doing.

She shouldn't have lost it that was very wrong, but so is parking on double yellows outside a school, i assume they are there to ensure a clear safe space for the children to cross with the correct amount of visibility, so yes you are endangering them. Just Becayse other
people idiots do this really doesn't mean you can.and that's a rubbish justification for endangering kids, and if the police caught you and charged you they wouldn't take it into account. It's not ok to park on double yellows outside a school.

AntiHop · 02/05/2017 19:41

Surely this is a reverse.

LouMumsnet · 02/05/2017 19:41

Evening all.

OP accidentally posted this thread three times, which was causing no end of confusion - and many, many reports - so we've taken two threads down and are leaving this one up.

Butteredparsnip1ps · 02/05/2017 19:42

Will you park on the double yellows tomorrow though?

We have a car park a 2 minute walk from school, but some parents still park on the yellow zigzags. Some even arrive extra early to get pole position. That is The spot closest to school. They'd save hours of their lives if they used the car park, it is a bizarre thing.

I park on double yellow with my blue badge because the school car park has building work and is horrendous for access. Other people without a blue badge copy and it makes me want to shout. When they park there illegally, I can't legally. So I am really stuck. It pisses me right off to be honest.

Peanutandphoenix · 02/05/2017 19:44

YABU unless you think you some kind of entitled snowflake who has a right to park where ever you please your breaking the law it's illegal to park on double yellow lines unless you have a blue badge but even then you can't park on double yellow lines if there are signs telling you not to. Just because people park there doesn't mean that you can too. Find somewhere less dangerous to park next time.

ALittleMop · 02/05/2017 19:45

OP, I'm sorry you're upset, but tbh upsetting people by shouting at them seems to be the only way of getting people to change their dangerous and selfish behaviour.

At our school a kid did get knocked down and - thankfully not too badly- hurt. After months of HT warnings in the newsletter and rants to FB groups, after months of parents with disabled children not being able to use the accessible parking.

YABWildlyUnreasonable

honeycheeerios · 02/05/2017 19:45

YABU

She should not have shouted, but you shouldn't park there. Simple.

What do we tell our kids? Just because someone else is doing something doesn't mean you should.

Hulababy · 02/05/2017 19:46

It's never appropriate to shout at people in the street, whatever they are doing.

I disagree. Although it might not be pleasant to be on the receiving end, there are times when it could be justified. If it is likely to prevent someone being injured for example.

Although a quiet word would have been preferable I wonder if the OP would have listened and taken action not to do it in future.

Ellie56 · 02/05/2017 19:46

There are double yellow lines outside my local school.

There is also a poster which shows some books and other things strewn all over a road beside a school. It carries the message:
"They didn't see me because you didn't park safely.
But you will all remember me."

It makes you think.

MrsMulder · 02/05/2017 19:48

A child at a local school here was knocked down after school and killed. The car wasn't speeding but couldn't see him because of all the other cars parked selfishly and illegally. If everyone had parked appropriately that day the car would have seen him on the pavement and saw him dash out. The outcome could have been very different. People still carry on parking like idiots though. I don't blame her for being angry, it makes my blood boil!

Yorkshiremummyof4 · 02/05/2017 19:51

I park between two gates saying do not park here. No yellow lines, I park here because the children leave from the gates either side, if I was to park further forward the children would have to go onto the road to get past me, which I feel is most dangerous. I'm disabled so can't actually walk more than four or five steps with my crutches, I'm also unable to get my wheelchair out unassisted. Therefore this is the only way I am collect my children. Our school only has 24 children therefore maybe not the huge issue as it is at other school.

PhilODox · 02/05/2017 19:52

Yabu and behaving like a selfish dick.
I am sick to death of trying to get out of schools that have parents' cars parked on double yellow lines and in the wavy zigzag lines. Even when you glare at them they look at you with bovine stares as if they can't work out why you're looking at them. Angry
