Fragrant Diane, she really is the kiss of death.
My toes are still curling

Didn't see polly's post because ... it's been removed.

Ginlinessisnexttogodliness · 02/05/2017 15:54

I've just watched the Daily Politics show on iPlayer. That was quite a pasting she got. And she was even patronising then!
She also failed yo deal with Raab's posturing, again another example of how poor the Shadow Cabinet is: no experiential nouse or knowledge to decimate his peevish posturing. Diane Abbot consistently fails to make hay whilst the sun shines terms of other MPs.

They're all just going through the motions

Hi all - we've now removed the post in question. Creighton, we only received one report from you, and it wasn't for that post - please do report anything that concerns you, and we will always take a look.

hackmum · 02/05/2017 15:57

Corbyn hasn't really got anyone left to serve in the shadow cabinet if Abbott goes. And he'll have even less choice after the election.

I couldn't bear to listen to the interview, but I read the transcript and to be honest, I'm puzzled. I'm not a massive fan of hers but she's not stupid, and she's a very experienced politician, so why she would go into an interview like that without having even the basic facts at her fingertips I've got no idea. Perhaps she was feeling ill or something?

FatherJemimaRacktool · 02/05/2017 16:00

But even if she was feeling ill, it doesn't explain why she didn't have the proper briefing with her when she did the interview. Or is the shadow cabinet now so totally disfunctional that they don't even have any advisors prepping for interviews?

creighton · 02/05/2017 16:05

Katherine, it does not matter if you only received one report about that comment. the comment needed to be removed and so should my comment that follows as it repeats/reports the accusation. DA is being spoken of in a vile way ( I think) but that comment went too far.

hackmum · 02/05/2017 16:06

"Or is the shadow cabinet now so totally disfunctional that they don't even have any advisors prepping for interviews?"

You've got to wonder, haven't you? The depressing thing is that May is clearly so out of her depth with this whole Brexit business that the Labour Party should be able to step in and make mincemeat of her and the rest of her ghastly government. Instead, they seem to have set themselves up as rivals in incompetence, ineptitude and in-fighting.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 02/05/2017 16:07

Of course it matters if there was one report! How else are mnhq going to know about it?

Waterbeads · 02/05/2017 16:08

"oh polly are you white girls still playing the race card?"
Reported. Disgraceful. I abhor racism and bigotry. I see how brown and black people in the UK are inherently disadvantaged because they are a minority and historically not people who had power.

But FFS "White Girls"????? Fuck off with that.
We are not girls, we are adults, how patronising to refer to posters as girls to belittle them.

And how very dare you refer to other posters as "white" in a derogative manner?! It's truly disgusting. We are all human beings. Some of us have mrs power than others. Statistically people from ethnic and religious minorities are disadvantaged in society. All true. Racism and xenophobia must be tackled on all levels.

Brown or Black on white racism does exist, of course and is every bit as despicable as any other type of bigotry.

"LABOUR MP Diane Abbott yesterday defended herself against charges of racism after criticising the appointment of ``blonde, blue-eyed'' Finnish nurses at her local hospital.

The black MP suggested the nurses at Homerton Hospital, Hackney, might be unfit to work in the multicultural east London borough.

Writing in her local paper, the Hackney Gazette, the MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington said: ``I am sure that these young women are charming. But they are basically here to improve their English and are unlikely to give the British health service a lifetime's commitment.''
www.heraldscotland.com/news/12029702.Abbott_denies_attack_on_nurses_was_racist/

There is so much wrong with what abbott said in this interview. Sexism: not all nurses are male. Racist stereotyping: blue eyed and blonde Finnish nurses (are they all? My very good Finnish friend who is a lecturer at a London college is brunette with brown eyes). Xenophobic: They are here jus to learn English and are not committed and therefore not good as nurses. FFS. Clearly this woman is a Brexiteer.

And...... whatever chance the Labour party had during this election, she has just fucked it up. Tories having a field day, I can hear the popping of champaign sparkling wine bottles.

RoseGoldProsecco · 02/05/2017 16:11

Creighton, I didn't see the original post. But regardless of what it said, yours are incredibly offensive and do your arguments no favours whatsoever.

GloriaGilbert · 02/05/2017 16:18

The interview was so dire, she'd be sensible to acknowledge it.

GloriaGilbert · 02/05/2017 16:19

I'm actually gobsmacked at the nurse comment. She really should be put out to pasture.

So who is allowed to criticise Diane Abbott? It seems white women shouldn't. Assuming they shouldn't because of the colour of their skin, what about black women?

Bringmesunshite · 02/05/2017 16:24

Not "knifing DA". Criticising a politician for showing incompetence when trying to make an important policy statement.
It is outrageous that she has to endure racist and sexist abuse.
It is not outrageous that she is being criticised for being incompetent at an important interview.

RoseGoldProsecco · 02/05/2017 16:26

Creighton, you can make a much more effective point without being rude and descending to someone else's level. your reply above implies that it's fine and dandy for black women to "knife" DA because they are black, but not white women because they are white.... "charming" indeed.

if you're misguided enough to defend the horribly incompetent DA, knock yourself out, but don't be racist yourself in doing it.

hackmum · 02/05/2017 16:29

Not defending the nurse comment but it was 20 years ago.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 02/05/2017 16:31

yes rose, I should be charming and speak nicely to all lovely white girls/women who are knifing DA. that's not offensive is it?

No one is 'knifing DA' oh and nor is everyone that has criticised Abbotts competence white!

HTH

TheFallenMadonna · 02/05/2017 16:36

The nurse thing was 1996. Focusing on that in 2017, alongside use of the phrase "playing the race card", is Hmm

None of that stops today's efforts from being a shocker. Though maybe the emphasis should be on Labour's disarray, rather than so personally vitriolic about Diane Abbott.

Ginlinessisnexttogodliness · 02/05/2017 16:38

It's a shame this thread has become fixated upon race.

By getting all worked up about something that is most definitely a non race issue you are ALL deflecting attention away from her total ineptitude during an interview. She'll be thanking you for it.

OP posts:
Bringmesunshite · 02/05/2017 16:38

JC's sucking up to Gerry Adams just after the Brighton Bomb (a vicious attack on democracy whatever your views on Thatcher) was also 20 odd years ago. Am I supposed to forget about that too when judging his character?

Ginlinessisnexttogodliness · 02/05/2017 16:40

FallenMadonna I agree that in that the matter is not just Abbots gross incompetence during that interview but Labour itself.
I said earlier in this discussion that to me, Corbyn is showing he really doesn't give a shit about reputation management, how the Labour Party is viewed etc if he doesn't take DA to task over this.

OP posts:
Ginlinessisnexttogodliness · 02/05/2017 16:41

True Bringmesunshite, mud sticks and often rightly so

OP posts:
TheFallenMadonna · 02/05/2017 16:42

I'm judging her competence, not her character.

If I were judging more widely, I'd also be judging the use of "playing the race card". Never a useful contribution to a discussion.
