Fragrant Diane, she really is the kiss of death.
My toes are still curling

the hatred of DA existed before this thread. other threads (every thread?) where she is mentioned have hatred in them.

You are quite guilty of framing this argument though, there can be and is legitimate criticism of DA.

Some of the criticism of DA on this and the other thread, although been barbed has in no way been any different of any other politician of any persuasion.

The recent putting words into another posters mouth by using "black whore" comes to mind.

Speaking as a WOC, i personally dislike her because of her hypocrisy, her using her privileged position to say things which no other politician would ever say and some of her policies (the recent UKIP FGM policy was taken from Abbot herself)

But, I expect a shadow home sec to be able to stand up to very loose scrutiny and put forward on of her policies. Because of this she is a liability to labour, although that in itself, in the current state, is an oxymoron

Ginlinessisnexttogodliness · 02/05/2017 19:28

Ah, careful Pixies there's some racist undertones in what you've written here 🙄🙄🙄

Lurker your oxymoron comment is quite apt. Somehow Diane Abbot has ended up lurching into the position one of the best of a bad bunch. And she's woeful.

It really was so out of character for Diane that I worry for her state of mind. Really quite sad for her as she's normally well able to hold her own in any interview. The film 'Still Alice' comes to mind but sincerely hope I'm way off.

Bringmesunshite · 02/05/2017 19:36

As I've already said in a previous role, I had to go on national radio regularly and defend my employer's position on controversial topics. I distinctly remember one occasion when I was surprised with a fellow contributor that our press office had refused to engage with. It was tough. I was as prepared as I could be with data and detail to defend our position. Listening to her on LBC was like listening to a rookie on a training course. Fine in a safe learning space. Disastrous live on the radio with millions of listeners.

creighton · 02/05/2017 19:37

i'm not guilty of anything. I respond to the posts of other people. why would anyone say that a female politician slept her way to her position, in this day and age?

speaking as a black woman, I neither like nor dislike her, but as you can see, I will defend her if I think it necessary.

it doesn't matter if she is a liability, she isn't the only one.

Waterbeads · 02/05/2017 19:37

I had not considered that Mrs but who knows? If she has onset of dementia then those close to her will have noticed something and it would be irresponsible of them to cover that up. She is the shadow HS ffs.

AwaywiththePixies27 · 02/05/2017 19:38

It really was so out of character for Diane that I worry for her state of mind .

Meh. She just sounded knackered (understandable. Snap general election.) and unprepared. (Everything put together in a rush).

makeourfuture · 02/05/2017 19:43

One concern, and we here it so much on here, is that she has an "uppity" attitude. There is a great deal of baggage there....about how black women should not be "uppity".

Our culture perhaps has framed black women who speak from a position of power...with authority.....as being "uppity".

I think that it is ingrained... and I think that anyone who feels a visceral sense of annoyance with Diane should examine themselves....not in a defensive way, and ask whether some of that comes from past/present caricatures of how black women are supposed to behave.

teawamutu · 02/05/2017 19:45

As long as you consider in turn that people might just think she's shite because... She's shite.

Bringmesunshite · 02/05/2017 19:46

Stop trying to defend today's performance with rhetoric about an inherent bias against black women. Where the feck has anyone in here said the horrible phrase "uppity "?
She was shit. It was embarrassing. She "misspoke " or whatever other bullshit phrase you want to cover it with.

Bringmesunshite · 02/05/2017 19:49

Yvette Cooper would have done a better job. Because she's better at it (regardless of what you think of her).

TheHiphopopotamus · 02/05/2017 19:51

All this talk of bias against black, 'uppity' (I literally cannot roll my eyes hard enough at that, btw) women is a nice deflection away from the actual facts of the matter, aren't they?

She was utterly, utterly awful in that interview.

makeourfuture · 02/05/2017 19:52

As long as you consider in turn that people might just think she's shite because... She's shite.

It is a consideration. And I would give it much credence if black women haven't been subjected...for so long, to these terrible caricatures. And they are so potent still today....like the magic black man that appears so many times in movies.

And again, haven't we witnessed on this very forum negative statements about her "raising a hand" and "rolling her eyes"?

surferjet · 02/05/2017 19:52

She's crap & an embarrassment.
I've never heard such an awful interview in my life.
If she ever gets the job of home secretary god help us.

AwaywiththePixies27 · 02/05/2017 19:54

She's described as uppity because she publicly spoke out about private schools and then sent her own DC(s) to one.

Which is perfectly fine to do, but just own your shit when you do do things like this.
This is why I'm convinced/fear that TM will get in with no contest. Because on the subject of grammar schools she said "typical labour etc etc...taking advantage of x and then pulling the ladder up behind them", she ess right.

RoseGoldProsecco · 02/05/2017 19:54

Right, so she can't just be crap at her job and a rather shitty human being who has expressed some unpleasant views in the past?

Bollocks to that.

JamieXeed74 · 02/05/2017 19:54

I just saw a sky news report on the issue and they have researched the facts in less than a day. Turns out another 10,000 police would cost £350,000,000 (even more if some of them were in London) which is a lot more than the 300 million DA is now saying it would cost.

Along with Dianne's idiocy it would make you think that Labour have just pulled this idea out of their big cash generating butts. Boris might be an arse hole but at least he is a very clever arse hole. Abbot isn't even a clever idiot she is just your plain garden variety of stupid idiot.

So its a case of vote Tory to get Labour a new leader.

Bringmesunshite · 02/05/2017 19:56

I loathe Andy "Bandwagon " Burnham who is standing for mayor in Greater Manchester where I live. I watched a recent debate on YouTube with the other candidates and I have to admit he was the best performer of the bunch. I was willing the Green Candidate (no pun intended) and the Lib Dem to be better. But they weren't. The point I'm making is that I am prepared to give credit for a good performance even if it is someone I personally dislike. And god do I dislike Burnham.
DA was shite today. If she'd been great, I would say so. But she really really wasn't.

makeourfuture · 02/05/2017 19:57

I am not asking for forgiveness for anything Diane has said or done in the past....only acknowledging that these biases are still potent and that to me at least the level of vitriol raises the possibility that with Diane they are in play.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 02/05/2017 19:58

Speaking with authority and from a position of power? Hmm

Are we still talking about Dianne Abbott here?

Waterbeads · 02/05/2017 20:06

"I am not asking for forgiveness for anything Diane has said or done in the past....only acknowledging that these biases are still potent and that to me at least the level of vitriol raises the possibility that with Diane they are in play."

No sometimes it really is somebody's obnoxious personality and attitude, not their skin colour or the fact they are female. Theres May and farge have received similarly emotional response as has corbyn. Abbott just doesn't come across well and is doing such very poor job.

Do you remember that she went home for one of our country's most crucial votes in Parliament? I cannot respect somebody like that.

surferjet · 02/05/2017 20:08

Abbot isn't even a clever idiot she is just your plain garden variety of stupid idiot

Grin so true.

PacificDogwod · 02/05/2017 20:12

The following does really not say much about how closely I follow politics (although I do, I am just really really shite with names.... Blush), but when I heard her this morning I did not recall who she was.
Like I said, not my proudest or most brightest moment....

She was dire. I had to switch over because it was too embarrassing to listen to tbh, and I felt sorry for whoever-it-was to be put so on the spot.

So, while I thought she was bad, it was not a racist judgement, but a competent-ist. So there.

Waterbeads · 02/05/2017 20:17

"Our culture perhaps has framed black women who speak from a position of power...with authority.....as being "uppity". "

Diane does not speak from a position of power but from a position of privilege.
