To ask how many sausages for an adult portion

Went to MILs for dinner today. She's done a sausage and bean casserole :P We got one sausage each. When SIL asked if we were on rations MIL pointed out that beans were protein too.... I do 2-3 sausages for an adult depending on size and meat content. How many do you do?

For me (have to watch calorie intake like a hawk as I put on weight easily) I see sausages as a less healthy food as they're fatty and 200 calories or so each, so 2 each for dinner with veg and trimmings is a substantial meal.

DH likes 3, the kids have 2. If I were catering then I'd allow for 3 each to be generous.

I have no judgement at all for how many sausages others eat, everyone has different lifestyles and preferences. Sausages are damn delicious!

Ethylred · 30/04/2017 11:42

An obvious fail on the catering front by MIL but let those of us without sin cast the first stone.

MitzyLeFrouf · 30/04/2017 11:51

Cast the first haricot bean more like!

Willyoujustbequiet · 30/04/2017 11:53

3

One is ridiculous. Is she short of money?

noeffingidea · 30/04/2017 12:11

I don't eat sausages, but for my (adult) son I would do 4 of the thin ones or 2 of the thick ones. That's what he asks for, I would happily do him more if he wanted them.
Beans would be an extra, and count more as a vegetable.Yes they do top up the protein as your MIL pointed out but most meat eaters do want the meat portion to be a decent size.

I have never forgiven my MIL for serving everyone TWO roast potatoes with Christmas lunch one year.

TWO fucking roasters! Shock

Ruined my day. Grin

noeffingidea · 30/04/2017 12:18

user that's just tight. And that's coming from me, who hates the whole massive christmas dinner thing. I usually put 5 or 6 smallish ones on the plate and leave the rest in the pan for people to help themselves.

user1491572121 · 30/04/2017 12:39

I think she just underestimated to be honest...she doesn't set much store by potatoes which quite frankly, is offensive to me an Irish woman.

They are everything.

BrexitSucks · 30/04/2017 13:32

I am shocked about 2-3-4-5... I would only expect 1 (usual medium size). Most adults are very inactive so one is plenty. Plus lots of veg, some roasties, butter, mash maybe, pudding. My elderly parents would manage... 0.5-1 (6'4" tall dad) & none (5'3" tall mom).

DH cycles 60 miles for fun, him & ever-ravenous teen DS would get 2 each. 1 each for others in family.

MitzyLeFrouf · 30/04/2017 13:36

Or just carve one sausage up between all family members. Surely that's plenty!

TinklyLittleLaugh · 30/04/2017 13:48

I chop them up in a casserole, a good way to stretch out a packet. Probes works out at about 2 each on average. If we were eating them with chips, DH would have 4, I'd have 2. Because he is 12 stone of muscle who has spent today doing a triathlon and I am 8.5 and have spent today sitting around.

Instasista · 30/04/2017 15:26

I really hope that's a piss take Brexit 😂

userofthiswebsite · 30/04/2017 15:29

two

Sgtmajormummy · 30/04/2017 15:51

3 if eaten straight up, less if in a casserole.

My usual serving is to give the same amount of protein to everybody (3 adults and one fast-growing 11yo) and then bulk out the more active people's plates with carbs.

Not that sausages are very "noble" protein, but their fat will have gone into the stew gravy and that goes more to the carb-eaters.

expatinscotland · 30/04/2017 16:01

None, you just wave the food in front of them, wave it twice for men and once for women since no one exercises or is hungry. You should have leftovers for another 8 meals.

bunnylove99 · 30/04/2017 16:01

I would make enough for 3 sausages each. I don't imagine I'd ever serve sausage and bean casserole to visitors though, especially not on a Saturday night.

greathat · 30/04/2017 16:27

It was definitely not a money thing :) I think she just wants us all to eat nice and healthy. I always host Xmas dinner, because I would not want to ever be in the situation where I only got roasties user! I know I do tend to massively overcater for Christmas though, and usually send everyone away with bubble and squeak (can't stand it personally but everyone else seems to love it)

bunnylove99:

What's wrong with a casserole? I am thrown by these threads sometimes. Casserole is nutritious, tasty and filling. What's the problem?

Increasinglymiddleaged · 30/04/2017 17:17

I slice one up and we share it amongst the whole family, so 1/4 each.

Do I win? Grin

Cagliostro · 30/04/2017 17:19

2 max for me but often happy with one (and I am a porker) DH will have 3-4 I think

I really want a sausage casserole now :(

pringlecat · 30/04/2017 17:19

Does anyone else really want a sausage and bean casserole now?

pringlecat · 30/04/2017 17:19

Cagliostro Great minds! Grin

Increasinglymiddleaged · 30/04/2017 17:22

And sausage casserole is lovely (with a full 3 sausages Wink) ...

milliemolliemou · 30/04/2017 17:27
  1. Fewer if in a casserole. But like LeFrouf and Expat I'll often just go for breathing in the steam ....
