What's your most shameful crappy meal for the DC?

Sometimes I don't want to think about what to make for dinner, I make pasta with nothing but olive oil and a bit of salt on top and then I scatter chorizo on it.

The kids love it and think it's a treat. 'Grin

Today (I'm in Oz and it's night here) I made them that but served them with corn on the cob too as a side vegetable.

What are your crappy, easy go-to meals for kids?

my cheat meal for me when OH is out is instant mash from the freezer, bunged in the microwave mix in a big knob of butter, sprinkle some salt on and sometimes I mix in grated cheese Blush

TheDevilMadeMeDoIt · 26/04/2017 12:28

RomanticWalks - with brown sugar? There's posh Grin. Butter and white sugar for me when I was little. And I've heard that it could be made with dripping too, which makes me feel a bit green.

Dripping and Bovril sandwiches were also around in my family, but not for me. Or dripping and the jelly that formed on the bottom when the meat juices and fat had set.

I'm surprised some of are still here!

(and apologies to OP for derailment)

NoCapes · 26/04/2017 12:28

This thread is hilarious

Someone said a jacket potato what the what?! That's a perfectly fine and acceptable meal!!

I'm never ashamed of anything I feed my kids (it's 1 meal and they're eating fgs!)
But the other day we went out for a pub lunch and the baby (17 months) had 'fish bites' (basically fish nuggets, greasy as shit!) chips and beans, then for tea that night I made chicken nuggets (I did different sides though) I didn't feel great about that tbh so I have him a banana for pudding - sorted! Grin

FeedTheSharkAndItWIllBite · 26/04/2017 12:29

is dripping the same as lard (confused foreigner here....)

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 26/04/2017 12:29

Yes, you can buy lard. It's with the butter in supermarkets. I use it when I make sausage rolls in the pastry

ohtheholidays · 26/04/2017 12:29

Tin of soup and a sandwich or soup and a toastie.

Magicpaintbrush · 26/04/2017 12:30

turkey dinosaurs, waffle and peas. Takes 20 mins, and prep at the beginning takes about 1 minute 30 seconds. She loves it, but it's not every day Grin

Germgirl · 26/04/2017 12:31

I recently re-discovered cream crackers, spread with marmite and topped with cheese, then microwaved for 30-40seconds. My dsd loves it :)
That's not a meal, although if you eat enough of then it is.
I try to cook 'proper' dinners when dsd is here, but her favourite meal of all is 'beige', frozen fish, frozen scampi, frozen chips with white sliced bread.

FeedTheSharkAndItWIllBite · 26/04/2017 12:32

tomorrow

Ohh. Awesome. I think I'll bake this weekend.... And make DD a lard sandwich (without the sugar... Maybe I'll put some fresh fruit on that)?

That makes me so nostalgic. One of my aunties used to make the best Casatiello. Easter is already passed but eh... I'll still serve it to DH ;)

RomanticWalksToTheFridge · 26/04/2017 12:32

Dripping and bovril!!!! Yes I have heard tell of those delights.

It;s funny you say that about the brown sugar TheDevil....my grandmother was a bit of a Hyacinth Bucket type and my mum used to point to the brown sugar usage as an example! (I'd forgotten all about it!).

Magicpaintbrush · 26/04/2017 12:33

The thing is, sometimes after a busy day the thought of cooking just makes me want to keel over and crawl under a rock. This is when the waffles come out of the freezer. Mind you, if I served that to my husband I'd never hear the end of it - but it would be a golden opportunity to suggest pleasantly that he do all the cooking instead.

Changingagain · 26/04/2017 12:34

These are everyday meals for us too cleanlaundry, and I suspect a lot of other people who don't want to admit it.

NewPantsforaNewYear · 26/04/2017 12:35

We love fishfinger sandwiches. I agree about needing ketchup and mayo, and, preferably, fresh white bread.

Always happy when I'm knackered and remember about them. Even more so when DH makes them.

TheDevilMadeMeDoIt · 26/04/2017 12:37

FeedTheShark lard is rendered down fat from a pig. It's simply melted and then made into blocks. Dripping is the cooled fat and meat juices that drip off the meat when you're doing a roast joint.

To really complicate things, if you roast your meat with a lump of lard rather than using oil, it mixes with the meat juices and fat, so that you get more at the end, which is just as tasty as pure dripping. Or so I'm told by family, who all used to do that.

wavinghello · 26/04/2017 12:39

Yesterday, we had hotdogs for tea. Frankfurters, bratwurst & lovely brioche buns from Aldi. I even had those dried onion bits to sprinkle on top in my cupboard.

Once a week on swimming night, I feed the kids pimped up supernoodles. One packet instant noodles, one packet of Udon noodles, (get me!) one sliced carrot and some green beans plus sliced up bockwurst and maybe some of those processed seafood sticks too - it takes me less than 10 mins. I might vary the protein with leftover roast, peppered mackerel, bacon, etc...

Pasta and pesto is another favourite - I do chuck in some broccoli/green beans and chicken/whatever is in the fridge to pad it out though. Takes 5 - 10 minutes especially with fresh pasta.

I'm definitely a fan of quick cook meals during the week. We normally come in just before 6pm so I cook straight away so the DC can have their tea and get down to HW by 6.30pm!

Grin

I've never had a sugar sandwich but I did love an after school snack of cinnamon & sugar on toast - best grilled so the sugar caramelizes. It did help to make me very fat though and so I will never feed it to the DC - but I might make myself one after they go to bed tonight.

FeedTheSharkAndItWIllBite · 26/04/2017 12:41

Ooh. Interesting. Although, dripping with sugar doesn't seem like a good idea for sandwiches. I think I'll stick to lard and white sugar. ;)

Up to now I've only seen lard used for baking...

(THis thread is awesome. It has made me so excited for the weekend....)

BeMorePanda · 26/04/2017 12:41

My Spanish friends Mum makes all her biscuits with lard - delicious.

Enb76 · 26/04/2017 12:48

My crappy meal is marmite & cheese on toast with some cherry tomatoes on the side.

On a Sunday night when I just can't be arsed.

SabineUndine · 26/04/2017 12:51

Tin of Heinz hoops, grated cheddar stirred in. Bring to boil, crack an egg on top. Put lid on pan. Egg poaches on the spag, cheese melts. It's gourmet stuff. NB this is for me, I haven't got kids.

ThymeLord · 26/04/2017 12:54

Most of the stuff I serve up is probably considered "junk" by the standards of this place. Luckily I have no shits to give Grin

Whereismumhiding2 · 26/04/2017 12:55

My laziest meals go to emergency meals are:

  • Eggybread for tea (dip a slice of bread both sides into a wide bowl containing a beaten egg /s and lightly fry it)
  • Pizza bread (slice of bread, smear some tomato chutney on it, top with grated cheese and asda smart price slice of ham ripped up onto it, put into the oven 8 mins)
  • hot pasta with a dairylea cheese triangle stirred into it in the bowl.
  • Sweet pepper (given as it is, just washed) with pot of asdas sweetchilli humous to dip it in. (Yes, my DC think that's a whole meal Blush)

Funnily enough my DC love the above "meals" just as much as the proper meals i slave over for ages.

ThymeLord · 26/04/2017 12:55

I'm adding that to the weekly meal list Sabine! Sounds excellent Grin

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 26/04/2017 12:55

Probably oven chips, bought turkey rissoles or sausages, and frozen peas. Quick, easy, minimum effort.
The quickest hot meal I can do though is cauliflower/pasta cheese. 10 mins to cook the pasta, the cauli florets steaming over the pasta, and the cheese sauce in a different pan - stick it all together at the end, job done. And that's one of DS1's favourite meals as well. :)

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 26/04/2017 12:56

Oh also tuna pasta - 10 mins to boil the pasta, add tin of tuna, tablespoonful of mayo and some capers - job done. Another of DS1's favourites (DS2 less keen - doesn't like capers and prefers tinned salmon to tuna)
