WTAF???? DH has just done this...

I know I am NBU but I just need to see if everyone else would be as fuming as I am.

DH has just picked DCs up from school. Last night DH cooked delicious roast chicken dinner. He was in charge of clearing up afterwards. There were two chicken pieces which he left on the hob in the roasting tin. I thought he was going to give them to the dog.

DD aged 7yrs has just come upto me and told me that she's just eaten two pieces of chicken and it was delicious!

I've checked...DH didn't heat up the chicken, which has been on the top of the hob in our warm kitchen, *(ie not in the fridge) for approximately 10 hours.

I thought she'd just swiped them, but no, DH gave them her to eat. FFS!

Actually ... YABU! It's a risk, for sure, and probably not a great idea. But I've done similar many times myself, and the kids will probably be fine too. Kids are way more resilient than we think sometimes.

c0lette · 25/04/2017 17:39

OK, read rest of thread - I do take the point that there are some serious risks (which I actually wasn't aware of).

But maybe the point is not to fume but rather say, 'did you know that actually...'?

ProtectandSurvive · 25/04/2017 17:40

My mother must have guts of steel. Pork cooked left overnight. . with mushy peas next day. The peas were always to blame for the aftermath. Obviously.Confused

Goldfishjane · 25/04/2017 17:43

I'm guessing user1493035447 is one of the posters who gets a laugh out of pretending to be thick.

accidentalbride · 25/04/2017 17:44

I don't think you overreacted at all. Chicken is very dangerous and shouldn't be out of the fridge for longer than 3-4 hours. I'm a bit shocked at people's ignorance and how many people thought it was ok to be honest... Well, not quite shocked at the fact because sadly I witness it all the time. However, shocked at the proportion of people who thought it was ok. I'm in a medical profession so know what I'm talking about.

helloworld2012 · 25/04/2017 17:46

I'm actually jealous that your husband cooks, cleans up after himself (mostly), picks up the kids from school and gives them a snack! Totally missing the point of the OP, I know.

accidentalbride · 25/04/2017 17:50

This is a very valid point helloworld! Grin

People survived centuries without fridges... calm down.

CatOnMyLap · 25/04/2017 17:52

for heaven's sake. it's fine.

accidentalbride · 25/04/2017 17:53

Average age expectancy was also way lower in the past centuries clarkl2 and clandestino... About 20-30 years lower actually

BreatheDeep · 25/04/2017 17:54

SOME people died from food poisoning for centuries. SOME people survived.

And bacteria does grow at room temperature to whoever said it didn't. Not all of them and its not the ideal temperature but it does grow.

accidentalbride · 25/04/2017 17:59

Thanks for some sanity on this thread BreatheDeep. It's funny how many people come and say: "I have gastric flu" or "I have this tummy bug that's been going round". No, you don have a gastric flu or tummy bug that's been going round. Most likely, you just ate some shit

Lweji · 25/04/2017 18:00

And bacteria does grow at room temperature to whoever said it didn't. Not all of them and its not the ideal temperature but it does grow.

Some bacteria grow at more than 60 ºC, so?

The bacteria that grow well at our body temperature, grow very slowly at room temperature.
Those bacteria can also grow at 5 ºC, btw. They don't die. :)

Sillysausage123 · 25/04/2017 18:01

What is Mumsnet opinion on this as I'm a bit worried ?

Forgot to preheat the oven to cook a full chicken , I just put the oven on and stuck the chicken in without thinking.
I know chicken has to be cooked quickly and in a preheated oven.
So will I be ill ?

Lweji · 25/04/2017 18:02

Chicken is very dangerous and shouldn't be out of the fridge for longer than 3-4 hours

Can you qualify that statement?
Raw chicken? Cooked chicken?
Do you know the difference?

lolalola19 · 25/04/2017 18:02

Don't worry - she will be fine. I'd eat it no problem!

Sparklyglitter · 25/04/2017 18:03

I would have told me husband off and not been very happy at all!! Frankly this is just stupid behaviour from an adult!! However in all likelihood they will be fine but frankly never worth the risk! Different if done by accident!!! Xx

Lweji · 25/04/2017 18:03

Sillysausage123

Make sure the inside of the chicken is hot enough and well cooked. If you have a meat thermometer, all the better.

accidentalbride · 25/04/2017 18:04

No, you just need to make sure it's cooked throughout. It's nothing to do with the starting temperature of the oven. Higher temperature at the start just makes it more crispy and easier to monitor the cooking time. Just give it 10 minutes extra. Try to break off the thigh to see if it comes off easily. If it does and there is no blood oozing, it's cooked well

Lweji · 25/04/2017 18:08

No, you don have a gastric flu or tummy bug that's been going round. Most likely, you just ate some shit

Because there's no such thing as norovirus or rotavirus, or astrovirus or adenovirus. Grin

Don't wash your hands frequently or wash your fruit from the supermarket then blame it on "some shit you ate". :)

MillieLikesSketty · 25/04/2017 18:09

I'm glad she's fine and hope she carries on being fine.
We have restaurants and my husband is a chef, we would have binned the chicken the next morning. As lots of people have said children and the elderly can react very differently and you have no idea how that chicken was stored prior to you purchasing it (I'm guessing?).
I think if it's serious enough for potential imprisonment for disregard of legislation there to protect people its worth giving it some consideration, no matter how many people say "I've done it and I'm fine".
Just my thoughts fwiw

accidentalbride · 25/04/2017 18:09

Lweji... I'm not sure if you are being sarcastic or not... But yes, i know the difference between raw and. Liked chicken Confused. Raw chicken should be kept out of the fridge as little as possible. But also for cooked chicken, the official guidelines are no longer than 4 hours. Anyone in food trade can tell you this

skerrywind · 25/04/2017 18:09

I grew up without a fridge.

I was 14 before we ever had a fridge or a freezer. Meat was left covered in a cupboard.
However, we also didn't have central heating, so houses were much colder then too. Chicken left out overnight in our kitchen would get quite chilly.

accidentalbride · 25/04/2017 18:13

THANK YOU MillieLikesSketty. Lweji... I just hope you are not a fellow medic...
