Apparently under twenty fives have been registering to vote in high numbers, assuming because lots of Tory policies have hit this age group negatively. AIBU to feel optimistic that they will turn out to vote and possibly prove the poll predictions wrong?

Any under 25's here who have registered with this intention?

I voted Remain but have to vote Labour in the GE. I have lived in a country (South Africa) where I have seen a child crash from a playground slide & bleed horribly & the hospital refusing to treat them until the credit card had been taken. I fear our NHS is heading this way. I want my children to leave university debt free & able to believe they will own their own home. I want my bed-ridden uncle to have his carer change his dirty sheets AND help him to breakfast instead of choosing between the two which he has to do as she is only allowed to give him 15 minutes. I do not believe anyone but Jeremy Corbyn's Labour will care enough to make all this happen...

This isn't a democracy at all. After Brexit I am skeptical that my vote counted for anything. If Donald Trump can win a presidential election tbh anything can happen...sigh.

Peregrina · 25/04/2017 21:45

DebraJH - one of the best statements I have heard to support the NHS. Yes, all those of you voting Tory, because you don't like Labour or the SNP, I hope you make provision for this to happen.

Don't think the Tories will support the NHS - in the 1950s they did, but the current incarnation won't.

LollyGag2020 · 25/04/2017 22:20

22 voting labour, would never ever ever vote Tory in a million years! Voted labour at last election, I am in Yorkshire though which is mostly labour I believe.

LollyGag2020 · 25/04/2017 22:24

I think the NHS is the best thing about this country, I want to preserve and protect it. Also I feel we have a duty of care to those in society in need - currently have a decent paying job and would be happy to pay more tax to support the welfare state than I currently am doing.

What should be on a General Election flyer created by the sitting government is a reminder of the great things they have achieved while in government.

The reason they are not sending you this info is because they are trying to distract you from their record by making the election about something it clearly isn’t.

Here are a few reminders of what would be on the flier if the Tories weren’t treating us like idiots.

How about the 20 Tory MPs including 2 cabinet ministers that are currently being investigated by police for election fraud?

The Benefits Cap.

The Bedroom Tax.

Cuts to Legal Aid.

National Debt of over £1,849,203,000,000.

The Junior Doctor Dispute.

Excluding under 21’s from Housing Benefit.

Massive increase in child poverty.

Excluding under 25’s from the Living Wage.

The reintroduction of Grammar Schools.

Cuts to Disability Benefits.

Changing the pension age for women.

Thousands of people dying after being declared fit for work.

The Rape Clause.

Pushing through a hard damaging Brexit.

Now you might think these policies and a whole lot more we could mention are brilliant.

In which case you don’t have a soul but you do have a perfectly good reason to vote Tory in this election. However, if you don’t like these, and think some other party has better policies, but are just voting Tory because you think your vote will influence the independence debate or how hard brexit is, then you need to take a good look at yourself.

I would argue that these ^ 'tactical voters' I.E. Remoaners, could potentially trigger even greater uncertainty and instability in our political system. If, IF .....their votes count in this forthcoming general election. Which hopefully they won't! We are leaving the EU and we need a strong government to do so......

SuperBeagle · 26/04/2017 00:08

*Now you might think these policies and a whole lot more we could mention are brilliant.

"You don't have a soul". What a load of shite. Grin You can be a decent person and still think some of those things are good - or at least that they're not as bad as you're making out.

Shellygirl78 · 26/04/2017 00:10

Regarding the NHS. The only way to chuck more money at the NHS is to raise YOUR taxes! All parties know this! Corbyn is in utopia. He (WE) need to PAY for his wonderful ideas..... somehow! The NHS is badly managed and the demands upon it are too great.... and ever increasing!!!!!

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 26/04/2017 00:16

I don't think it is that unusual for the opposition to have a surge in the polls soon after an election has been announced as they are offering change

We have what six weeks yet the Tories have weeks to trash Labours policies and the party as it's hugely and very publicly split (Tories are better at fighting behind closed doors)

Tories are going to win seats and LD's Labour will loose seats as it will come down to who is better at leading us through Brexit May or Corbyn

Peregrina · 26/04/2017 00:28

Recall that when Cameron did a runner, he had very little success to claim in his resignation speech. Gay marriage was one, but that was policy only got through with the support of Labour and the LibDems, it wouldn't have got through if it had been Tory policy. I can't think what else there was. Certainly, not a record of sweeping success.

The NHS is badly managed and the demands upon it are too great.... and ever increasing!!!!!
So you would like to pay considerably more for a badly managed but Private system?

Let's hope you get your Tory majority, and when leaving the EU goes tits up, as it will do, the blame will be theirs and theirs alone. Which May knows.

Iwishiwasstill19 · 26/04/2017 06:55

aaahhhBump brilliant

Not a record I would be proud of.

Am also tired of hearing how badly managed the NHS is. Most organisations would struggle to run effectively with inadequate resources and the impact of the social care bill ( another Tory policy) has been monumental! So much ignorance around.

The country is reaping what is sows and I for one won't put my name to it.

Iwishiwasstill19 · 26/04/2017 06:57

And yes I work in the NHS ( in one of the most deprived areas in the U.K.) and have for many years. Wish people would start listening to the people who are on the inside, trying their best to provide a good health service, for everyone.

Peregrina · 26/04/2017 07:11

The country is reaping what is sows and I for one won't put my name to it.

Please, please shout this from the rooftops, shout it where everyone can hear. The NHS has been steadily cut back by stealth, without people realising - it never figured on election manifestos. So instead of telling us you will vote Tory because you don't like Corbyn, tell us you are happy to see the Health Service wrecked because of a dislike of one man.

Cloudgaga · 26/04/2017 07:15

"So you would like to pay considerably more for a badly managed but Private system?"

I said this to DP yesterday. Services are already lacking in many areas. A&E is nearly not coping as we are told.

As privatisation increases by stealth the mismanagement and inefficiency will become 100X worse. There will be so many stakeholders. Processes and business principles undefined and in constant change with changing goal posts that staff can not ever really seem to meet - as one private health are provider takes over form the previous ad infinitum (as is usual in the private sector!!!). Staff changeover galore, no standardised care. The transition from what we have now to an unspecified system will probably take decades and will likely remain an unfinished and unsatisfactory undertaking.

Some European countries have mandatory health insurance, true. But their system has existed for over 100 years and is super efficient with outstanding health care. This is because to is massively subsidised by the state and has had time to mature with private insurances who have been in business for a long time and a wealth of experience. Ironically we will rely on EU expertise in this area to get anything off the ground.

In the end we will have to pay on average 300-500- per family of four with a lesser service than we have now. Hmm.

And looking to the US for inspiration regarding healthcare........ would the stupidest thing to do. Their political approach to the health system is cut throat and frankly uncivilised and inhumane.

Writing this post this annoying little tune popped in my mind, anyone remember?

Money, money, money
Must be funny
In the rich man's world
Money, money, money
Always sunny
In the rich man's world
Aha-ahaaa
All the things I could do
If I had a little money
It's a rich man's world

we'll all be singing this if you tick the Tori box on 8 June.

BrexshitMeansBrexshit · 26/04/2017 07:17

Gosh, ShelleyGirl, your excessive use of exclamation marks and random capitalisation have convinced me of the validity of your various points, especially this one.

It might surprise you to know that some of us value the NHS so highly that we would happily pay more tax to support it. So, (a) don't assume everyone is as tight-arsed as you. Many of us are happy for our taxes to be used to support public services, and (b) try to understand that underfunding is due to Tory ideology. This country is one of the wealthiest in the world. Our government chooses to cripple the NHS. It chooses to have citizens using food banks and chooses not to provide adequate housing.

BrexshitMeansBrexshit · 26/04/2017 07:24

You make a good point here, cloudgaga. I can imagine the destruction of the NHS will use the Brexit model:

  • Let's get rid of the NHS
  • Err, okay, but what's the plan for replacing it?
  • It will all be fine
  • But what is the plan?
  • Plans? We don't need a plan. We won two world wars.
etc.
HPFA · 26/04/2017 07:29

Hate be a party pooper but the EU apparently don't care all that much who wins the election:

twitter.com/davidallengreen/status/856943661078151168

Their negotiating position is pretty much set and they are apparently prepared to allow UK to walk away if they decide not to accept it, presumably calculating that the potential loss to their export trade will be largely offset by companies moving into the EU from the UK. So if the only threat that UK has, to walk away, isn't seen as much of a threat it really matters not who does the negotiating.

But don't worry, David Allan Green only writes about law and finance for the FT so what would he know? For those interested the rest of the thread is fairly terrifying, I could get to the full FT article mentioned but free access to the FT seems variable.

Fab39ish · 26/04/2017 07:35

Even my Tory voting hrt paying husband would pay an extra penny on income tax if it was invested in the NHS.
The other issue with the conservative government is education. In the next few years my dds school is going to lose the equivalent of over ,£500 per pupil. Scary stuff.
Sadly my vote doesn't matter as I live in a Conservative stronghold and even the tactical voting sites are unable to suggest a solution but I will be voting.

Cloudgaga · 26/04/2017 07:36

ShelleyGirl A Tori government is going to raise taxes by April next year. They will have to. Ironically.

Cloudgaga · 26/04/2017 07:37

They will have to do to Brexit.
