To think this child shouldn't show off this way?

Fourtwenty · 22/04/2017 21:43

One of the children in my dd's school has taken a page out of a brochure and put it on the wrong of a clear plastic pencil case and has been showing everyone.

(She comes from a wealthy family so it's more than likely not a lie.)

Obviously I'm not saying this girl should say nothing. But I feel like it would almost be the equivalent of me buying a Porsche, taking photos of it and showing everyone at work.

I think everyone is entitled to nice things, but I don't think you should rub said things in everyone's face. Other way around I wouldn't want my dd cutting out our holiday from a brochure and taking it into school to show off.

When I was around that age, my friend would bang on and on about how she was going on holiday (again) to Blackpool and how amazing it was to whoever would listen. I was jealous because she was so enthusiastic about the holiday and thought I was missing out on something amazing. Didn't occur to me that I went on far more holidays than her and to much more exotic locations.

Some children just do go on and on when they're excited. And it's often the children, who have issues or insecurities. They're not necessarily bragging, they're just excited like 5 yr olds. I see nothing malicious. It's good your dd has told you, now you have the opportunity to explain this to her. It's a bit unfortunate you're wasting that opportunity and finding fault with the other girl. She isn't doing anything wrong. She's just acting 12 going on 5 like a lot of adults do when they're excited about something.

AnnieAnoniMouse · 23/04/2017 10:25

Just when you think this place couldn't get any more batshit...

jeaux90 · 23/04/2017 10:25

I think the girl is entitled to be excited. I hope you taught your daughter some grace. Let's hope she didn't crush the girl with being totally unimpressed. Kindness is the best quality we can teach our kids, you aren't displaying much grace or kindness here.

BeMorePanda · 23/04/2017 10:26

Adults getting involved in kids stuff is pretty ridiculous. I think that shouldn't happen.

What are Thea plastic pencil cases you can put pictures in? I'd like one for dd.

NoFuckingRoomOnMyBroom · 23/04/2017 10:28

I get the feeling this thread didn't quite go the way the OP expected...Wink

Ktown · 23/04/2017 10:28

It's a holiday not the Crown Jewels.
Lots of people love holidays. I don't, but I understand others do.
Don't get carried away with keeping up as it will make you miserable.
Each to their own.

AliceKlar · 23/04/2017 10:30

Sadly the world is very unequal. Compared with the vast majority of people living on this planet all of us in the UK have riches beyond comprehension. It's not right and it's bloody unfair but there we go.

I live in a one bed, not so nice HA flat. My friends who didn't marry a lying shit who lost their houses and every other asset going, live in lovely houses. They go on holiday to the States, Antartica, Thailand etc. I haven't been able to afford a holiday for 3 years. I'm not pissed with them for going and having a great time. It's the way the cookie crumbles. The kid in your DDs class is probably excited and I'd tell my own DC in that position that everyone has a different amount of money and can afford different things. We shouldn't dislike her for having parents who can take her on nice holidays.

Yellowcups · 23/04/2017 10:32

We've got children in our school wearing second hand uniform and the wrong shoes all school year but they go on holiday every year. Good on them u say

notapizzaeater · 23/04/2017 10:33

Can't be live ive wasted 5 mins reading this.

TBH children love showing holidays wherever they are. I'm just back from butlins - my ds has had the best time ever. We go abroad at least twice a year but butlins wins everytime.

User2468 · 23/04/2017 10:35

So you don't want a 12 year old child to be excited about going on holiday because not everyone in her class could afford it?

WTAF

Just because I can't afford to do something doesn't mean I shouldn't be excited for someone else. Try being less jealous of a 12 year old and you'll find it less boastful.

Ferrisday · 23/04/2017 10:35

She's 12
She's excited

Let's move on

User2468 · 23/04/2017 10:36

I feel very guilty for having pictures of my pony on my pencil case when I was 12, because not everyone in my class had a pony. I didn't realise what an awful child I was...

kali110 · 23/04/2017 10:37

i get the feeling this thread didn't quite go the way the OP expected...wink

No which is why op is now throwing her toys out the pram.

I still don't get what the big crime is that this child did!

Bluntness100 · 23/04/2017 10:37

I honestly thought I'd seen everything on here but this is a new low.

And no matter how op is tying to say she is not jealous, the simple fact she used the phrase "rubbing everyone's faces in it"

Bluntness100 · 23/04/2017 10:38

Sorry and compares it to buying a Porsche says she is jealous. In the extreme.

Underthemoonlight · 23/04/2017 10:38

Wow jealsously and venom that come across in your posts about an 12 year old is shocking. Who starts a thread like this in the first place. Instead of being bitter why don't you actually save up and take your dd abroad if it means so much to you. Seriously get a grip, your suppose to be an adult here!!

floraeasy · 23/04/2017 10:39

Maybe kid is looking forward to her holiday (I know I would be!) and it gets her through the day to look at the pic.

I've saved happy events in my life as computer wallpaper at work - why the hell not?

I never had a holiday as a child. NEVER. ANYWHERE. I still coped. Some children at my school went to Florida and Disney World. Some holidayed in the UK. Some, like myself, never got taken anywhere.

I survived.

Fanciedachange17 · 23/04/2017 10:40

My daughter has a horse. We had an amazing holiday last year and she told her friends. She also told them none of us have iPhones, we don't have Sky, we live very frugally and it's a matter of choice how and where we spend our incomes. Her friends were all happy for her as she is for them when they get to do things or have beautiful new clothes. Our income is probably lower than most of the families at her school as I can't afford for her to go to town every Saturday and drop £50 spending on make up, clothes and Starbucks like some of her classmates do.
You've had a pasting on here OP (and retaliated) and I sort of see what you are saying but I don't agree with you. As a previous poster pointed out; a child from a wealthy family is more likely to go to an Independent school where these holidays are a normality. As my 2 DC go to different schools, one State, one public I am in a position to see the differences.
Let the 12 year old enjoy "showing off". Anticipation of a holiday is a huge part of the enjoyment. Good for her.

DaemonPantalaemon · 23/04/2017 10:41

Is English not your first language OP?

user1489179512 · 23/04/2017 10:42

WaitroseCoffeeCostaCup

I think YABO

What's a YABO?

I am very amused that you feel able to comment on anyone's spelling and grammar after reading your original post!

Tee hee....

CountryCaterpillar · 23/04/2017 10:44

Yellow - my kids were secondhamd clothes and go on holiday each year (often a caravan holiday / camping/sometimes abroad.)

Why would I buy new uniform when I have completely fine uniform passed down? Youngest often wears oldest old things. We pass on what we dont use.

Is second hand uniform really a bad thing and noticed?!

plominoagain · 23/04/2017 10:46

Just before Easter, I was in the school playground waiting for the doors to open , and listening to a VERY excited 11 year old telling her friends that she was going straight to the airport after school because she was going to Florida . She too , had a picture of where she was going and was showing all her friends . She was was so excited , she made up a song and was singing about going to Florida . The joy and excitement was literally radiating from her ( I did wonder how much work the teacher was going to get ! )

My two youngest children haven't ever been out of the country , because we just can't afford it . They are 10 and 12 . Did I feel envious ? No . Did I feel she was odd , or that she should shut up because it was rubbing it in our faces ? Of course not . If anything , it really made me smile because seeing someone that happy is rare .

Funnyfarmer · 23/04/2017 10:53

You still haven't said where the holiday is? If it's something really poncey like a 6 months cruise or hiking in the Himalayas then maybe we could understand.
Or is it the child in question and not the holiday? Do you just not like her.? Is she mean?, a bully, ? Like that spoiled kid off Charlie and the chocolate factory? Is she your dd's ex best friend? Who's now gone flowncing off with another group of girls? I really am trying to understand why it's botherd you so much?
Then to attack everyone who doesn't agree with you. I can't help thinking there's more to it?

youarenotkiddingme · 23/04/2017 10:55

Ironically 5/7 of my colleagues in my department have gone on holiday this Easter. 4 to India (not together!) and 1 to Greece.
I've stayed home and fielded meltdowns left right and centre from autistic ds and attended a number of appointments with him.

I cannot wait to hear all about my colleagues time away. I've texted them all to say hope they had fun and hope they have photos ready to next weeks lunch breaks.

Likewise when I got my new (to me!) car the other week they were all thrilled for me and we went for a drive to costa in it!

Ok, their new cars are usually 2/3 years old and mine is 5! BUT ..... we all celebrate the positives in each other's lives.

Funnyfarmer · 23/04/2017 11:02

@youarenotkiddingme that's because that's people you like. I get the feeling op just doesn't like the child. She's not jealous. Why should she be? She has 3 holidays a year. She hasn't been specific with destination so it's not that. Think the only thing left it's the child herself that's pissed off op. Maybe she doesn't want to say because people will flame her more. Maybe I'm wrong and op is annoyed for no reason what so ever.
